I'd be more annoyed that the university was trying to guilt-trip me like that. You should let whoever forced you to go know that you're aware of that game, and you don't want to play. You're not paying your professor's salary for him to use you as a means by which to soapbox about his pet causes.

No, you don't know these people. You're programmed a certain way, and you have a certain "give a shit" threshold. Everyone has a different one.
Most people really don't care, but that doesn't make you not a douchebag. It IS possible to come out of one of those classes thinking "god damn that sucks...I feel empathy for my fellow man" but still not give all your possessions to the poor and surrender yourself to a monastic lifestyle. Personally, I think the things happening to those people are horrific, but there's nothing I can do about it (yet) so I go on trying to be a good person here.
The more and more I read about stuff like this, the more humanity as a speicies reminds me of rats on a sinking ship; just climbing over one another to get in a better situation and not really caring about those underneath.

But if your like. "Sucks for them, but what am I going to do?" And then you ignore it.
I don't 'care' I think it sucks for them, I am glad some organizations help the starving kids, but other than that I don't care. If you can't do anything and put it out of mind, then no your not heartless. If you could do something, but just didn't then you probably are a d-bag.
Someone told my uncle once, when he didn't finish a meal and threw it away. "You know there are starving kids in africa" To which he replied. "What the fuck do you want me to do? Mail them my leftovers?"

No. simple as that. The fact that you don't honestly care about starving children around the world means you're obviously more concerned about the things that are wrong on your HOME SOIL than over there. Frankly I could care less if children are starving in the middle east if we can't even afford to feed our people HERE. If we can't keep ourselves in check, why the HELL should we be trying to help other nations . . .bak00777 said:
