I just don't know anything anymore!

Alright, so their is this girl I like who is really into anime and manga and stuff like that. So I thought I'd give it a second look. I watched shows like Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon when I was a little kid, but that was about as far into the anime subject I ever got. So I decided yesterday to do research on Manga (All suggestions coming from members of this site) and because they are books, I wouldn't be able to check any out until I get back to my highschool and go through the Manga section in the school library. But as I was searching for intersting things, I decided to talk to my friend who really liked one particular anime, so I asked him the title of it.

So I got the title (Darker than Black) and watched the first 4 episodes on youtube...
After about 20 minuites of just sitting in my couch thinking... I realised I liked it... Not just liked, I fucking really enjoyed it.

I never was the biggest fan of anime, and for godssakes I have no Idea what the hell is going on. I watched a couple more anime shows I overlooked and enjoyed those too. I still don't get it.

WHY?

IS THIS SOME WIERD METAMORPHASIS?

But anyway, escapist members, what do you think of anime and manga and other wierd japanese culter things?

...Anime is just a medium...

It's got as wide of a content base as any other medium, even if it is heavily weighted toward the inane.

I like anime. It's an interesting thing to watch, and some of the stories are pretty cool.

Right now I'm trying to get into the mind of the subculture in Japan, because I'm thinking about doing a small documentary on it, since I'm not sure that one exists in English.

I love anime. Most of it is in fact sub-par, but despite what people say, it's easy to find the many, many shows that are truly worth watching.

They're just Japanese cartoons/comics.

Although I never really liked any of them untill I found Code Geass. Once you find one good one it's easier to find more that you'll also watch.

I am not a fan. I think the anamation is nice, but I dislike more what anime fandom does to people, like this poor man:(Not safe for sanity)

Anime is more a visual stylization than it is a genre of content. Granted a majority of it likes to frequent the cliches, and usually it's written really questionably, but that doesn't mean that it can't POTENTIALLY be good. Every now and then I'll find one I like, but generally I'm not really a fan.

I think of anime as being basically equivalent to Hollywood. Mostly formulaic crap with the occasional absolute gem.

GEH! MAH EYES!

But I don't have any odd cosplay sensations such as that. The furthiest I would go currently is Hei from Darker than Black in his Black reaper gear... OH GOD I'M STARTING TO SOUND LIKE MY ANIME OBSESED FRIENDS!

I love anime as a whole, but it seems like everybody else watches different anime than me. My cousin can go on forever about anime chracters that I have never heard of. I've only got a handful of animes under my belt:

Dragon Ball Z
Suzuka
Desert Punk
Get Backers
Yugioh
Pokemon

Other than the first and two last, most people don't know what the other three are.

As far as starting to like it all of a sudden? You just didn't really explore it enough. You saw anime that were more common in America than other animes. Not that you did this, but if somebody claimed those animes were the best ever, that be like saying McDonald's and Burger King make the best burgers due to a lack of expose to regular burger joints.

I never knew I liked Grunge until I gave it a shot. I always thought it was just people being angry and depressed at everything. Turns out it actually kicks ass. Like Heavy metal and Alternative rock's lovechild. Makes sense because it sort of went Metal-> Grunge-> Alt Rock.

Hahaha! "Sailor Bubba" does that the first time you see him.

And being a fan is fine. Being a weirdo that goes around wearing cat ears and screaming "desu, desu, desu!" is not fine.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!

If you're open minded and watch shows from many different countries, you'll find that you enjoy many different formats. It doesn't mean you're a strict anime fanboy, it means you're more open to other cultures.

Watches Darker than Black: Am I actually starting to ENJOY anime?
Watches Monty Python: Am I actually starting to ENJOY British comedy?
Watches Chilly Beach: Am I actually starting to ENJOY Canadian comedy*?
Watches Ong Bak II: Am I actually starting to ENJOY Thai action movies?

Be open minded and watch things from lots of places, not just your own language. I believe I've seen movies and TV shows produced on every continent except Antarctica (March of the Penguins was only filmed there).

*As a Canadian, I confess I actually have no idea if Chilly Beach is funny to non-Canadians.

First off: Anime/manga are awesome. So there is nothing wrong with seeing the light and liking them.

Second: Hayao Miyazaki is one of, if no the greatest director ever.

Third: You. El-Hazard: The Magnificent World and/or Spice & Wolf. Now.
