Congratz on choosing a great starting point. Darker Than Black is great :3 Even if it does tend to drag on for the last 6 or so episodes.

Nothing wrong with liking anime. Once you're comfortable try My Little Pony.
/wut
Though Darker than Black tends to confuse me a lot.

I hate how Episode 4 ends so abruptly, and then episode 5 starts on a whole new storyline.
Well yeah, the same happened in the transition between 2 and 3. The series is split up into 2-episode arcs which follow completely different storylines.

I'M ONE POST AWAY FROM BEING ON THE RECORD WOOT

I never really got manga.
15 years ago it was a bit of a big thing so I watched the films on Channel 4 and suchlike.

Not one of them made a single bit of sense! Sorry guys, I'm sure I'm missing out on something good, but never got it.

Anyway that's my opinion on Manga....is Anime any different?
It's like Colored manga. I don't like it if it is not in english. I have to watch an english dub, or I will want to stab myself from all of the weird words.
I lol'd cheers Mastachief,

It may have been the dubbing but despite that I genuinely couldn't get my head round the storyline/plot, plus they all reminded me too much of Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds, except making less sense.

BTW is that cartoon still going?

Oh, if you want as close to an unbiased opinion on sub vs. dub as you can get, look here. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/SugarWiki/SuperlativeDubbing] A lot of the people here may not agree with it, but it's a pretty good collection of good dubs.

That and watch Neon Genesis Evangelion dubbed. Ignore those who disagree, in whole or in part.

They're just Japanese cartoons/comics.

Although I never really liked any of them untill I found Code Geass. Once you find one good one it's easier to find more that you'll also watch.
Ah, Code Geass. The anime that holds the distinction of being the one I have the most mixed feelings for. High points are really high, low points are insufferably low.

Remember: Anime is just an artstyle. Sturgeon's Law is going to apply to it, just like everything else, but there's few things that are automatically inherent to it.

I've not watched Darker Than Black, but here's some suggestions for the animes that are usually considered good, thought you might want to know. Assume that you should watch the Sub for all that I do not specify.

In no particular order:

Cowboy Bebop (watch the dub, it's the poster child for dubs done right)
Code Geass (Sub is really entertaining, main character's Japanese voice actor is hilariously hammy)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (pretty depressing deconstruction of the Mecha genre, quite entertaining)
Death Note (both dub and sub are actually pretty good)
Avatar: The Last Airbender (not anime, but close enough that you probably subconsciously grouped them together. Probably my favorite show ever)
Outlaw Star (haven't watched it, but I've heard good things)
Gurren Laggan (only watched a few episodes so far, but I have friends who are obsessed)
I know that Cowboy bebop has to be good, seeing as how my OWN FATHER used to watch it in depth. He hates most TV shows. I have watched a few episodes of that and I like it. My friend usually talks about death note, so I'll have to look that one up. And I love Avatar TLAB, I never concidered it an anime though.
Fair enough. Yeah, Death Note is a great place to start. I have no idea whether to recommend the Dub or Sub, though.

After that, Code Geass is probably a good place to go, but Death Note will take long enough that you'll have a pretty long time to decide.

To anyone who is about to tread down that dark path as I once did, remember this: You WILL be judged by the standards of other anime fans, specificly, the most anoying one that particular person knows.
Far too true.

Which is why I suggest, dear OP, that you get out while you still can. In the eye of the outsiders, to like one show is to love it all, for we are a greatly feared and misunderstood group and any association with us is to be shunned and ignored with the utmost harshness.

...Okay, I'm exaggerating, but I'm far from being sarcastic.

... Most of this has already been said, so I'm leaving this to a pointed summary.

1. Anime is a medium
2. Each series has its own merits and drawbacks
3. Having a few issues and being exposed to a horde of anti-fans can make anything seem diabolic.

Having said that, my personal favorite anime series were Code Geass, Deathnote, Trigun, and Chrono Crusade. A lot of them contain the same old problems with many anime, which are often put there just to sate people who expect that of the genre, but if you can ignore someone face-diving into a girl's breasts and everyone's eyes being hideously deformed, you can have a pretty good time with them.

I just don't know anything anymore!

Alright, so their is this girl I like who is really into anime and manga and stuff like that. So I thought I'd give it a second look. I watched shows like Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon when I was a little kid, but that was about as far into the anime subject I ever got. So I decided yesterday to do research on Manga (All suggestions coming from members of this site) and because they are books, I wouldn't be able to check any out until I get back to my highschool and go through the Manga section in the school library. But as I was searching for intersting things, I decided to talk to my friend who really liked one particular anime, so I asked him the title of it.

So I got the title (Darker than Black) and watched the first 4 episodes on youtube...
After about 20 minuites of just sitting in my couch thinking... I realised I liked it... Not just liked, I fucking really enjoyed it.

I never was the biggest fan of anime, and for godssakes I have no Idea what the hell is going on. I watched a couple more anime shows I overlooked and enjoyed those too. I still don't get it.

WHY?

IS THIS SOME WIERD METAMORPHASIS?

But anyway, escapist members, what do you think of anime and manga and other wierd japanese culter things?
Like any good story it all started with a girl. Heh.

That said, I had long held the belief that all anime, everywhere was crap. Growing up in the 80's and somehow missing Macross my opinion of anime was a rough cross section between sailor moon, hentai and pokemon (I'd later love pokemon for team rocket but anyhow). When I was about 18 or 19 though the sci fi channel would show anime's late night at 12 or 1 or something. It was here that I caught a chance to see ghost in the shell. Which while it didn't wow me in characterization totally surprised me by being a mature and intelligent film. After that, the promo for next week said they were going to show Iria. I decided to check it out and I really liked that one. So when I stumbled across an episode of gundam wing on latenight toonami I gave it a chance. I started watching it regularly for it's sweeping plot and my brother would deride me for it until he started paying attention and started watching it too. This led to a couple of fine shows through cartoon network like outlaw star. When I learned outlaw star was edited for television on the then infant internet I tracked down some (yes) VHS tapes of it's original format. This led me to DVD's of shows that would never see air on TV like Berserk (The first series I loved), and Hellsing. By the time FLCL came to cartoon network my dvd was a year old lol.

To make a long story short I found out that my thinking had been small minded and that I had been wrong. And it was wonderful to experience being wrong. It showed me that in a larger context I shouldn't always hold my opinions to be absolute and to always consider the possibility that I could be wrong which has helped me a great deal in life when I remember the lesson. My interest has petered off in the past few years, but it was an eye-opener for me and I can't fathom now how I couldn't realize it was just a medium but I was younger then and foolish. I know a lot of uninformed people will say it's childish crap, and yet it helped move me towards being an adult. I think a lot of people could use the lesson it taught me but rarely do we ever get to see how wrong we can be with our own eyes. I hope you'll remember that lesson yourself amigo.

As for me I've been watching a lot of anime as of the start of this year. Netflix got in a slew of good shows I missed when people were talking about them so between that and watching all 4 seasons of Farscape I kinda feel like a kid again. I'd recommend BERSERK to you. Besides teaching me you don't spell berserk with a z it's a great show, a great manga and with the new series coming up there's never been a better time to start with it.

Anime is no different than any other show. There are different genres catering to a variety of folks from them to enjoy. Just don't enjoy it alone in your dark room with the curtains drawn while your family is out doing [stuff]. That is obsession.

Or maybe hentai.

Kawaii desu kawaii!!!!! ^_^
But seriously there are some anime that are actually good, like saint saiya, neon genesis evangelion, gantz and hellsing.
BTW: you should never judge something base en it's genre, that is what has brought so much pain in gaming...desu.

Personally, I'm a bigger fan of manga than anime.
I find that the manga industry is more willing to take chances and go with something totally insane, while anime OC usually tends to be bland and same-ey. Plus I find it more enjoyable to be able to see the author's personality through the work, and its fun to watch the artistry improve as the series progresses.

Anime is interesting because it shows us what it's like when a culture legitimizes animation as a medium (as opposed to the west, where the Animation Age Ghetto dictates that animation is for children.) The result is that you get some really high-quality, intelligent shows that deal with mature issues, plus a lot of formulaic stuff (and a metric ton of weird tentacle porn.)

But yeah, I had a similar experience last week. I was sick and stuck in bed for a few days and finally caved to watching Death Note. It gave me that "Huh! Japan is pretty okay!" feeling.
