I need to know if I'm sort of oddity (or rarity) amongst teenagers in general, or just my friends.
You're a rarity, yes. I'm in a similar position. I'm 23, a student, I hardly ever drink (used to drink more in the past though), have never smoked in my life, can't drive. The only jobs I have are temporary vacation jobs. People around me get smashed every weekend, a couple of friends smoke pot on a nearly daily basis. Pretty much everyone can drive.

Meh, I don't mind, I have other priorities and better ways to spend my money than buying alcohol and weed.

Okay, after poking around this site for a while (on my old account, too) I have realised that I am an oddity around here.

I drink reguarly (mostly at gatherings and parties) and at times I get completely wasted. I'm interested in sex (straight, by the way), and I listen to Dubstep and Indie Rock more than any kind of Metal. I have a part-time job and am far from 'quiet' or 'shy'. I've also got into a fair ammount of fights (and even won a few).

But hell, I'm as big a nerd as anyone here. I love me some comic books, and play a shitload of videogames. I'm well into the nerd culture, too. And I guess I'm in the minority here aswell since I LOVE Halo and aren't that big on Anime.

But hey, everyone's unique, so even though someone's different to the norm doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

EDIT: An oddity on The Escapist, I meant. But I don't really give a shit. I enjoy my life.

EDIT: I also don't smoke. Tastes shit.

Something very common among us nerds is that we take care of ourselves.
Not as in: completely avoid anything dirty (physically dirty) but as in avoid any types of sickness and trouble inside our bodies.
Strong amounts of alcohol and smoking is something we dun' like.

You're ... unusual but far from unique, by local standards.

The one thing I'd say you should change is the job situation. Having past experience of showing up on time and getting your job done, confirmed by your past employers' glowing references, is very valuable indeed when it comes to getting a "real" job, i.e. one that's going to have to pay the mortgage, rent, maintenance fees, council tax, gas bill, water bill, electricity bill, checkout prices, subscription fees, insurance premiums, .....

Nope, you sound the same as me, except that I can drive, I've gone through the learner stage, and I'm now at the next level, "novice", although I hate driving and I prefer to bike everywhere, if possible.

I'd never do drugs, even weed, although pretty much all my friends do, also the most I have ever had to drink was a few ciders that were about 7%, so I only felt a bit lightheaded. I just don't need that shit to have fun at a party, most of my friends respect this, even if they don't understand it.

I also have no job, although I'm trying desperately to find one.

You don't do things that are bad for you?
You're weird. (Kidding)

Cheer up mate, you're not weird, you're just smart. :D

I guess I'll just have to one up you with not drinking at all. On here I don't think you are that much of an oddity as gaming is our drug but in real life yes we are a bit of a rarity.

This person sounds like all of my friends when THEY were 17, until I corrupted them all. MWUHAHAHAHAHAH!! No, but seriously, at my friend's 17th birthday, he was still having a magic show, and I showed up after drinking a 2-litre of rye and coke. I myself was the oddity in that case, until everyone grew up a little bit and started experimenting.

The only thing that is odd to me is that you can't drive.

Everything else is pretty much because those people lack the self control not to drink or smoke. Sure, anyone can make an argument for being "normal" by drinking or smoking a little, but when it really comes down to it, there is no need for any of that. I did not drink, smoke or do drugs in high school and I don't feel like I was missing out on anything except maybe some car accidents, poor choices of friends and a hangover or two. :)

Oh clever, this isn't one of the "am I the only one..." threads!

Anyway, to put it simply: no that is not an oddity.

I've never smoked or done drugs. I have never taken a driving lesson, and had a job for around 4 months before quitting for exams. I enjoy a drink but don't get excessively drunk on a regular basis.
I'm 18.

Oddity or not, nobody can judge you for who you are, except yourself.
And why judge yourself?

Nope, I'm pretty much the same. I'm not even necessarily against people that use the drugs, I'd just prefer not to.

Although I never understood the fun of getting hammered and forgetting the night before, leaving a hangover in the morning.

Your not uncommon; thats the way it is with many of my friends. I myself avoid mind alteration at any cost; simply because the few times I've tried it I've discovered things go very wrong. Even on weed I'm a very unlikeable guy; condescending and arrogant.

Keep clean; live a happy life; by no means a "proper" life; or a "right" life, but its not wrong; so it's definitely permissible. To each their own.

i dont think so. though you imply that weed is worse than tobacco and booze, which isnt true. but regardless, i think its fairly normal. i have 2 friends like that, though 1 has their license. also, i really dont understand why teens seem to think booze is better for you than weed. because its legal? not for you atm!

You are not an oddity. I was like that when I was your age, and I'm still like that ten years later. :)

Of course, some people will try to make you feel like you're an oddity. But if you're happy with yourself and comfortable with your decisions, then hopefully you'll care little for such nonsense. The opinions of people who try to pull you down are really not worth the time of day.
