Its not often I do these kind of threads buuuuttt, here we go.

So I bought Bioshock 2 on the day of release for like £26, through Steam (it kicks ass in case you were wondering, not that you were because you've probably all played it).

Anyway one of my friends wants to download it from my Steam account and decided to log on and take it without asking, so I told him he couldn't so he didn't. Except not quite. When I went to bed he started downloading it again and thanks to his sucktakular internet connection he only got to 56% ish by the time I found out when I got in from school today.

We got into an arguement about it and he said that because I didn't want to give him another full price game through Steam (I have him Fear 2 on release and Dragon Age a few weeks ago) that I was being a brat who just didn't want to share my new toys. It should be noted that I only get games from him when he offers because I don't ask and he gave me Psychonauts, even though it was only £1 and his, and my, other friend let me download Portal from him when it was like £18. And that he never asks for these games, he just takes, except for Fear 2.

Anyway I thought I'd get some fresh perspective and would like you folks to tell me whether I'm being a brat or whether he's being unfair, if you'd be so kind.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I changed my password.

Also worth mentioning is that he doesn't consider this stealing. He used the analogy that I should 'share my chips' with him instead of throwing the rest away. Which I think means that as I've already paid for it so giving it to him will not inconvenience me and I should give it to him.. I really hate his analogies.
the thing i do with my friends for any game is we share, but stealing a game isn't good.

Your friend is committing acts of asshattery. Tell him to stuff it and go to a public tracker like every other person who wants free games.

Not really. If he's getting full price games off you without giving you something every now and then, he's just taking advantage of you.

Maybe you should ask him if he wants to split the price with you?
I would but he's kinda poor, which is another reason he says that I shouldn't mind giving them to him. Of course when I say poor, he just doesn't like to spend, he does have some money. But I'm not really comfortable with charging friends for some reason, although I'm not really comfortable giving hand outs either.
No you are not a brat ,while i admire your Compassion toward your friend, in the end i don't think it will end well.
You must first try to see the Consequences your actions may Have.
By giving in to your friend, he may see all things that they are his (or something similar). whack him over the head and make him understand that since it is YOURS, it is not his place to challenge your decision or, even worse, do it behind your back.
In any case, if your friend is still an Ass about it...well, don't consider him your friend anymore, more like am Acquaintance or something.
(Yes, to anyone familiar who reads this, i subscribe to the Darth Treya View on Morality)

Naw your friend is being the brat.. and if he is just taking stuff from you without asking.. Then he is eccentially stealing and you paid for the game. So its totally up to you weather or not you give it to him.. I think he ought to be more grateful and give you something every now and then.. Thats only fair right?

Even if he doesn't think that it is stealing, the fact of the matter is that he IS stealing. You are not being a brat. He is the one that is acting immature, and a friend DOES NOT steal from you.

1. Sharing games IS stealing. I might not agree with current policies on copyright, but you can get arrested, put in jail and pay handsome fees if you are ever caught.

So if your friends demands that you run the risk, he's the idiot. This is not like stealing candy. Copyright infringement can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars/pounds/euro.

2. He violated your trust by accessing your private account and information. No means no, even among friends. Believe me, HE is the stupid brat here, not you.

Ok, i read first page so i dont really know how things have gone since that point in the conversation but heres my two cents for the original question.

He is wrong for trying to take the game, especially after you told him no. Very immature on his behalf and you probably will need to watch him because clearly he is a selfish person and take my advice if you have him over make sure you got all your cash tucked away somewhere hidden and safe. I've had friends i thought were good people steal from me and its lead to some rather bitter grudges, but i dont tolerate theft and i'll call someone out about it no matter who's around. If you asked for some cash i'd gladly lend it out... losing my train of though...

Anyways, there are two ways to handle this. Either tell him to go f' himself its your game and i dont need your friendship... and sadly if you guys are getting in arguements sometimes it goes that way...

Or two, tell him "hey buddy, i'll let you borrow the game just not right now. I'm still using it, when i get done with it you'll be the first to know alright?"

If he cant accept those very very very fair terms, especially since he is the beggar here ( beggars cant be choosers ) then i'd go with option number 1 i mentioned earlier.

I'd say your a tad daft for giving anyone your steam password, but we're talking stupid spoiled brat here. No you're friend is, if you wish to call him a friend. No friend should ever go behind your back 1: Potentiolly get your steam account banned (Which I can see as more than likely), and 2: steal from you. Okay, he gave you Psychonauts, it was a pound. And he uses that to justify the fact he stole something worth £25 off of you? Sorry but I don't think this person is your friend, but just befriending you to get at something you have/can get.

Since I'm feeling analoguous... that's not a word.

Your friend pirating a game the normal way, is like him robbing an elderly woman by pointing at her with a pistol.

Borrowing your steam account, then using it to download a game that you have bought, is like him robbing an elderly woman, threatening her with an old shoe that he stole from your apartment.

ie. not very effective/smart/anything.

To get to the topic. No, you're not whiny, your friend is. Using your steam account without your permission is what is called a dick move. Tell him to buy/pirate games like normal people do, will save both of you the hassle. If he wants to steal games, there's no reason for him to inconvenience you with it.

no, he's being a prick.

i don't particularly like loaning out my games, but i do so quite often. if someone asks, i'll let them. if someone grabs it, starts heading to my door and says, i'm gonna take this for a couple weeks, my foot would be firmly planted in their lower intestines.

Tell him to get a job and pay for his own games, they ain't cheap these days so why should he take them from you?

This thread has SUCH an obvious answer. He's being unfair and the 'brat' here, of course. You should tell him to a) fuck off, b) buy his own damn games, and c) never come back fucking with your games, unless he starts lending you shit.

He tries to take something from you without asking, yet you're the brat? Internal logic error; does not compute.

technically he is stealing it from you and illegaly copying it, so you could get him in a lot of trouble
