Its not often I do these kind of threads buuuuttt, here we go.

So I bought Bioshock 2 on the day of release for like £26, through Steam (it kicks ass in case you were wondering, not that you were because you've probably all played it).

Anyway one of my friends wants to download it from my Steam account and decided to log on and take it without asking, so I told him he couldn't so he didn't. Except not quite. When I went to bed he started downloading it again and thanks to his sucktakular internet connection he only got to 56% ish by the time I found out when I got in from school today.

We got into an arguement about it and he said that because I didn't want to give him another full price game through Steam (I have him Fear 2 on release and Dragon Age a few weeks ago) that I was being a brat who just didn't want to share my new toys. It should be noted that I only get games from him when he offers because I don't ask and he gave me Psychonauts, even though it was only £1 and his, and my, other friend let me download Portal from him when it was like £18. And that he never asks for these games, he just takes, except for Fear 2.

Anyway I thought I'd get some fresh perspective and would like you folks to tell me whether I'm being a brat or whether he's being unfair, if you'd be so kind.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I changed my password.

Also worth mentioning is that he doesn't consider this stealing. He used the analogy that I should 'share my chips' with him instead of throwing the rest away. Which I think means that as I've already paid for it so giving it to him will not inconvenience me and I should give it to him.. I really hate his analogies.
Well, even though he doesn't consider it stealing it still is. He broke into your files without your permission, then began to take your property for himself. So what if it's just copying? The FBI wouldn't be to happy if someone went into their databases and started copying stuff. If the dude has so little respect for you and your wishes, you may just want to end your friendship with him, because no one would do that to a true friend.

Why, hello dev!

So what games have you worked on?

Sorry, curiosity got the better of me.
Curiosity killed the cat, they say. I've worked on Dragon Age, hence my prior comment, as well as Jade Empire, Mass Effect, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Spend enough years busting your ass to get a game out the door and you develop a zero-tolerance mentality for pirating.

Satisfaction brought the cat back, they say.

And WOW! Am I satisfied. Those are really great games. I'm assuming you work at Bioware, and you should be super proud of that.

He's being unreasonable. I'd say stop being friends with him but I know that's not going to happen, so just don't let him even look at your Steam account.

you did the right thing in not letting him download it, if you did, your pirating the game, and that just fucks us all over in the end, sence the people that made it lose money and if they lose too much money, they shut down, and then we all lose.

Whatever the question is, the answer is probably yes. Now to read the question.

OK, first off you're a prat for letting him have your password. It's against the terms of the EULA which you agreed to (and is LEGALLY BINDING), so you're technically breaking the law by letting him use it without being present.

By "letting him use it", I'm guessing you mean downloading and playing it, because you can't get 2 copies that you can use simultaneously.

It's not like giving him some of your chips at all. It's like letting him drive the car that you're insured to drive. Whilst yes, it's not technically going to cost you anything to let him drive it (assume for the purpose of argument that he pays for the exact amount of fuel he uses), 1) If he gets caught using it he'll risk having the car impounded (your steam account banned) and 2) It's not his bloody car.

I'm sure if he can't afford to buy, what about finding a copy torrent?

But no. You're not a spoiled brat.

No, no you're not a spoiled brat. Your friend seems to be however; change your password and tell him to fuck off next time.

They are YOUR new toys.
Sounds like that "friend" of yours only cares about abusing your steam, dump him!

Bad idea. If he downloads from your account, because its steam, logs it to his computer, so neither of you can play at the same time. A good compromise is to just tell him to wait till you finish.
