My boyfriend and me are convinced we're the most perfect for each other than 2 people can be, and we both plan on getting married someday. But we both also know to wait at least a few years to be sure we still love each other

There's a definite line between cynicism and realism. I'd say you are well in the safe zone.

It's more sadistic than it is optimistic to actually support such a poorly thought-out decision.

No, you're not too cynical. Such a thing does exist, but you haven't reached that point yet. As long as you are able to appreciate the good things in life, you aren't too cynical. It is totally reasonable to doubt that the marriage will last if they haven't even known each other for 4 months.

It's probably not a good idea to ask a load of Cynics if you're too cynical, but what do I know.
but if they were a load of cynics, wouldnt they all be saying I was way too cynical instead of the complete opposite?

Too cynical is, "They're going to hate each other in a few months, but oh well, marriage is a flawed institution anyway, any amount of happiness/security they can bring each other for any length of time is good, since nothing can be done to alter their courses of mutually assured destruction."

What you thought can only be called "rational."

Congrats, the internet has ruined you.

Dude we can't tell if your cynical or not just from one situation. You'll have to give us a few good paragraphs before we can have any idea if you are or not. And even then we probably won't be able to tell.

I think badly of alot of things, I like to tell myself I am purely being realistic. That said my life view is somewhat jaded.

Also, I would have thought the same thing (in fact, I did as I was reading this post).

so today I heard someone talk about how they got married and stuff, and she said she only dated the guy for four months, then they decided they should get married, and since they decided so early it was "obviously meant to be".
my first thought was "yeah right, I bet it lasts shorter than you dated" (i didnt say it, just thought it)
then my second thought was "wow that was cynical, would anyone else just have thought it was sweet/nice and went on?"
I've been described as extremely cynical, but until now I just laughed and thought nothing of it. but now im scared

so my fellow escapees

am I too cynical?
Yes.

Being idealistic even when there's no reason to be so is always the right course of action. It may seem as though it would just be fooling yourself, and setting yourself up for disappointment, but without a positive outlook on life, good things can't be achieved.

Well, my grandparents went on two dates, got married, and it lasted over 50 years until my grandad passed away.

It can happen...

<quote= Conan O'Brien> All I ask of you is one thing: please don?t be cynical. I hate cynicism. It's my least favorite quality and it doesn?t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard, and you?re kind, amazing things will happen.

I think that sums my thoughts on the matter up nicely. Cynicism is useless, and I doubt any of you can convince me otherwise.

Nope not too cynical at all.
People like that are why divorce rates are so high.
My belief is if you havn't at least lived together for a year before marrying then you are in for a rough time.
Obviously my zealotally pentecostal christian parents weren't too happy when I applied this principle to my own life, but I stand by my belief that anyone who doesn't is taking a big gamble..

Too cynical? My dear friend, you are not nearly cynical enough.

I, personally, would have wondered what exactly the newly wed braggart was really so interested in getting married for so early...
