now. lyra is good for a girl. i hate maes though. sounded more like a girls name than a guys name to me. but original is good.

i wish my parents hadnt named me josh (in a class of 56 in my elementary school 6 kids were named josh. for my birth year i had the most common name) that being said i dont mind my name it just is super unoriginal.

That aside, if I had a son I always wanted to name him Deckard. So, I guess that is nerdy, but I can't find anything wrong with it. Kids are going to be mocked regardless of their name. It is just what kids do. Little fucking assholes that they are, and all. I can't imagine why anyone would want a child.

They're not that much better than adults, really. Adults just hide their feelings better. (I mean from ages 6+.)

Uncommon names are awesome. Yes your child may be taunted a little, but everybody gets taunted for one reason or another. I have a really boring common name and I was still taunted about it. Children always find something to taunt each other about. It's what they do. If it's not your name is your hair, or your glasses, or your clothes, or etc. etc.

I'm tempted to name my firstborn son Bruce Wayne or firstborn daughter Barbara Gordon. I probably won't, though. Hey, I may be a nerd, but I'm not about to name my children after characters from a TV show, Video Game, comic book, or movie.

If I ever have kids, I like the names Matthew, Lucien, and Vincent for a boy, or Marisa, Vanessa, and Amelia for a girl.

If I wanted to doom them, I'd name them something like Dindarest or Roesgeni. Or NULL POINTER. /jk

Yes and no.

Children will be able to taunt anything if they think hard enough, so whether or not your children will be taunted is kind of down to whether they make friends or are social rejects, which is kind of beyond your control.

However, there are names which you can give children which will result in them being taunted no matter what you do. Lyra and Maes I think are okay, probably Lyra has already been used ever since His Dark Materials came out, and Maes is interesting enough but not so different that children will mock it right off the bat.

Stuff like 'Apple' 'Prince Michael' 'Dweezlebub' and 'Moon Unit'. These are names which are going to get your child mercilessly mocked. And although celebs' kids probably won't be, it's when idiots see that their favourite celebrity has named their child Apple and decides to follow suit, except that instead of being Gwneth Paltrow they're Shannon Jones who works at TESCOs and the kid goes to Cringleford First and Middle School. That's when poor Apple would get taunted.

Generally I think you can choose exotic and interesting names as long as they aren't too 'out there.' Also, don't spell a normal name differently just to be different. Holli with an 'i' is just retarded, and since it won't sound any different when your child is learning to say it, don't bother.

A name like mine on the other hand. I'm actually the only one in my country named like that, and I can see why. In my language there are like 5 things wrong with that name that I have to explain every single time, and people don't remember more than 3 of those things, so they get it wrong anyway.

No, I dont think your dooming them at all, I think its better to have an uncommon name, I would like to name my son Cyrus or something like that and for a girl, Mikan...its cute!

Naming a kid after a hobby or TV show seems a little cruel and shallow. Might as well name the kid "Nyancat" or "iPad" or something like that; none of our favorite pop culture things will still be relevant by the time your poor offspring is an adult and has to explain the dated reference. Neither of my parents named me after 80's fads, thank FSM.

I have an uncommon name, and sure, I was picked on it a bit when I was a kid. Now, I don't mind, it makes people remember me, and I would feel odd changing it for something more average.

Maes isn't so bad, it's just that teachers will have an extremely hard time pronouncing his name. This isn't unusual though, as they have trouble pronouncing anything more original than Joe Smith.

Lyra, however, is a badass name.

EDIT: If I wanted to curse my children, their first name would be something that sounds like "Are you". My last name sounds like "sure" so their name would be "Are You Sure".

Seriously though, i think those names are awesome. I'm into unique names for sure, as long as they aren't too out there, and I reckon your choices fit nicely.

EDIT: A lot of dislike for Maes I see here. I actually like Maes a lot... more so than Lyra. Lyra makes me think of Lycra. But I still like Lyra.

Interesting, but I reckon that's just over thinking it. Unless this guy already lives in Wales, what people who speak other languages interpret the name as shouldn't really matter.

On that topic the word 'mimi' in Maori (my language, that of indigenous New Zealanders) means urine. Or to urinate.
