There are only two kinds of people who play things that resemble games that I do not consider gamers.
People who play nothing but sports games. That's not gaming, that's a power fantasy, which are fine, and are PART of gaming, but do not make up gaming as a whole. If you play other things AND sports games, fine - I'll call you a gamer if you like Madden AND Call of Duty, but please, if all you ever do is play Madden '10, don't try and call yourself a gamer. You're a football enthusiast.
People who play facebook games and only facebook games. People who stick to things like Farmville exclusively are not gamers. My mother and great aunt play Farmville. They're not gamers. They don't know anything about the culture surrounding gaming and just play those games to turn their brains off after a long day's work. While it is amusing oneself with a game, it doesn't fall under cultural category in which I sort "gamers".
Survival horror and shooters? You sound like a gamer to me.
Wrong on both accounts. I play neither, but...
Sports games are a game, of a game. The amount of strategy it takes to win a game of baseball in real life rivals that of chess. Its not just "throw ball fast, catch bad hits" you have to taunt the batter into swinging at intentionally bad pitches, or know when a sacrifice fly is better than trying to swing as hard as possible. Replicating that mentality in a videogame is like playing final fantasy tactics. but really, i guess that just a otherworld battle power fantasy, right?
And as far as Zynga... people cannot grasp how important Zynga is towards the mainstreaming of videogames as a whole. Its the basic sorts of mental connections that will help towards legitimizing video games as a hobby. Once someone realizes that playing Farmville will not make them want to milk cows, they will better be able to understand that GTA doesnt make me want to snort hookers and kill blow.
