The new 360's have a much better prevention from getting RROD due to a new processor and fan.

There are a few articles in both OXB, and GameInformer that talk about all the new tech in the latest batch of 360's.

Also to the person who is thinking of getting a 360, they are very nice, have some quality games and a pretty good online community. I have met some pretty cool people on XBL. Which is way better than PSN. That being said, if you are a girl, recreational gamer, or someone who likes to just mess around online. Be careful because there are people who will 1. Sexually harass, 2. verbally harass, or 3. boot you from games if they don't like you. To me that is the only negative to the 360's community. Other than that it is a pretty awesome system. Or you could do as T3h Camp3r T3rr0r1st said and just upgrade your PC.

That's my two cents on this.

I can't explain it, but I find console shooters work best with the controller, I have a 360 controller for my PC, and it's brilliant, and I found Bioshock played better with the controller than via mouse and keyboard, yet I can't imagine playing something like TF2 by controller.

I'm also playing SR2 on PC using the pad, and it works really nicely, tho if I could afford it, I'd get a 360 too.

I have thought about buying an Xbox for quite some time now. It'll my first console since the SNES, so I have a few questions.

What are shooters like? I just can't imagine myself playing with a controller instead of mouse and keyboard.

When is the best time to buy one? I'm pretty poor, so I'm considering either wishing one for Christmas, or buying one in the (hopefully) January sale. But do the prizes actually drop?

EDIT: Also, Saints Row 2 or GTA IV? Bought GTA IV for my PC, but sadly I couldn't even run it :(
If your plans are to play online then buy a computer, if your plans are to play SHOOTERS online then buy a good computer. For single player games I'd go for a PS3.

(and lets not forget there's a lot of free games for computer, hmmm? =])

There *are* some good exclusives to the 360, and it gets some good JRPGs as well as Mass Effect and Gears of War. That said (and I'm not flaming here people) if you prefer action/adventure I'd go for the PS3. Heavenly Sword is a damn fine example, and IMO the PS3 version of Force Unleashed is still superior.

I love both SR2 and GTA4, it's just a matter of what you prefer on the day. SR2 has a very irreverent sense of humour and doesn't mind being a little silly, whereas GTA4 can come across as too gritty sometimes but has a decent storyline. I have to admit though that I (guiltily) enjoyed some of the mini-games more in SR2. Who doesn't dream of hosing their neighbourhood down with liquid shit occasionally? :p

I recently bought an Xbox Elite and was pleased to discover it had a Jasper motherboard. These run cooler and are thought to be less prone to the RROD fault. It is much quieter than my previous Xbox and it has a large 120 GB hard drive on which I have installed the cream of my game collection. So, in that respect it is similar to a PC. You do have to have the appropriate game disc in the drive for copy-protection reasons, but after an initial check the drive falls silent and that means less wear and tear. About the only thing I didn't like about it was the matching black controller which had a different slipperier plastic on the thumbsticks - so I just re-synched one of my old white ones.

As I've been an Xbox owner for a while, I'll recommend some games:

Project Gotham Racing 3 (far better than ..4 or Forza, also check out Geometry Wars which is built in to the game)
Crackdown (it gets really compulsive finding all the agility orbs, done by the same guy who did GTA)
The Orange Box (really good value, 5 games in one box - good if you like Half-Life)
Mirror's Edge (you may find this a bit short, so you may want to rent this one)
Halo 3 Multiplayer (or just get Halo ODST for the disc with all the maps)

of course, you can download games too, like:

Battlefield: Bad Company
Halo: Combat Evolved
GTA: San Andreas
Burnout Paradise
Bioshock
Oblivion
Black

The Maw

IMO just upgrade your PC, I bought a 360 but hardly ever play it, if you MUST get one then get the elite w/ ODST for $449 (AUD) It's worth it if you want to play the console ports when they were good (see GTA IV)

EDIT: Saint's Row DEFINITELY! I got both and SR2 is just SOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER!
This and only this. This is all you need.

Also maybe with Modern Warefare on the 360

Your PC will be better than a 360 after a few upgrades, I'd simply upgrade it if I were you.
There's only 4 or 5 games I own on the 360 that haven't come out on the PC and to be honest, I wouldn't have minded if I never played them. Next generation I'm not buying a Microsoft console, I'm just gonna get a new mac and put the latest version of Windows on it, through Bootcamp.
Just upgrade dude, if it's not too much trouble.

I seem to be spending more money on my new x360 than I did on my PC, which can still run the latest games without any hiccups, well, maybe except ARMA 2 on the highest settings > . >

So uh, upgrade your PC, and do what all PC gamers do, wait till Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, the next Blizzard MMO comes out. Oh, and make sure to stack up on the pr0n. Any self-respecting PC gamer would do as much. Well, maybe except feed the fishes.

Price drops are happening over here in Aussie, and people who never think of games are buying them now. Shooters are pretty awesome, but any random little shit can play a shooter, but it requires skill to master them. (Gears 2 FTW!!!)

And get SR2.

It depends on the style of gamer you are... 360 has more and better shooters than a PS3, so if that's what you want then go for 360. I just upgraded to an Elite a few weeks ago.

Also, regarding the new chipsets, they're called "Jasper" and you can tell yours is a Jasper if it was manufactured after October 08 and has a 12.1 A power supply. this information can be found on the back of the system. AFAIK, no Jasper units have RROD'd as of this writing, but they've been out for less than a year.

SR 2 over GTA IV any day, it's just way more fun. GTA IV has it's positives, but it's not really a 'GTA' game.

Yeah, I don't know what it is, but GTA IV's system reqs are ridiculous and then some. :(

The controller is no where near as precise for FPSs. But it's not completely unserviceable.

EDIT: I picked up mine back in January when Circuit City was going under, so that probably would have been the best time, honestly.

I can't afford to build a new PC
I am sure that Baby Tea is my thought double. Anyway, just remember, 360s aren't very reliable with myself not long breaking my fifth unit. Just upgrade the hell out of your PC and get Saints Row 2 (you need the power to run THAT port).

I used to be a big PC gamer too but since pretty much all the AAA games for PC are now horrendously buggy console ports I picked up a 360 in March. It's a good system and games very very rarely crash (SFIV did at launch during certain online matches but they patched it). It's also a great media system if that floats your boat.

Apparently the newer ones have better reliablity, I haven't had issues with mine but it's not very old. On the upside 360s are so cheap that you can get 5 for the price of a decent PC.

Thanks for the responses :) I believe I'm going to buy a 360 as soon as possible, but I'll definitely keep playing on my PC and upgrade it when I can afford to do so.

Not everyone likes dealing with all the stuff you have to with PC gaming. He just asked if he should get a 360 or not. Not a 360 or ____.

I just saw a flyer for Wal Mart advertising an Arcade with Lego Indy and Kung Fu Panda (niether horrible games just not the greatest) selling for $150 cdn. So you add in $100 for a 60gb Hdd and it is still a damn good deal. Just gotta shop around and be patient.

Shooters are pretty easy to get used to on the Xbox.
I say get it if you can get used to the sound of kids yelling at you because you took "their" gun, killed them, or you "cheated" (shoot claymore through a wall, hijacked their chopper, sniped a spy, anything they don't think is possible). I just hope you can get over the constant yelling and enjoy your game(s).
