Am I simply thick for not liking Eve Online?

It's all been said really.

I downloaded the trial a couple of days ago, and I can understand why you might not like EVE, there does seem to be a lot of little bugs kicking about but I have yet to find one that causes me to stop playing out of disgust. The learning curve IS phenomenally steep, but I like that, it keeps out the ignorant, the impatient and the snot-nosed brats. I don't play any other MMORPGs so I have nothing to compare this game to, though I was still surprised at the open and friendly community.

What sealed the deal for me though was when I first Warp-jumped, and I noticed the devs had included the Doppler effect! Red behind, Blue in front, it still makes me smile. :D

Holy crud-muffins. I had no idea that I would get this much of a response after a single day. To add to the people who said the game's steep learning curve as a sort of idiot filter noted a reason that I did like the game. It's community was quite intelligent and very surprising for any game that has an open chat channel. I still have a few days left in my free trial and have yet to delete it so if someone wishes to lead me along by the hand and such my contact info is on my profile and yada yada yada.

I join you in your views with EVE Online. I do enjoy space games, and there is a game I'm looking forward to. It's still in development, and will be for some time. Infinity: The Quest for Earth, presents us with many new things to look forward to, and while the main site does not get updated very often the forums are extremely active and the man who is making the game posts regularly.

Yeah, I await that game too. And it's actually like 30 people making that game.

Well, there are several contributers, but Flavien Brebion(Infinity Admin) is the main man.

Taken from the FAQ page:

How many developers are working on the game ?

At the moment the core team is formed of 8 members plus I (Flavien Brebion) as the project leader/programmer. Infinity also works on a community contributions model where anybody with 3D modeling, texturing or musical skills can help out. We have received more than a hundred contributions so far. For more informations, please see our contributions forum.

A big problem with EvE is that I don't feel like I'm really involved in the game. I set course for that asteroid off in the distance, browse Escapist and swing back in half-an-hour's time to alter my course slightly.

EVE is fun during the trial, Myself and friend both started a few years back, I gave up after the trial as I was too tight to pay for a MMORPG, and he continued on until 2006, where, and I kid you not, he needed to have 8 months Real Time of training before he could use the next class of ship, which he'd been able to buy for about month before discovering this.

EVE Online is a very niche game, it requires a lot patience.

8 months? What was he trying to fly, a titan?

I've just checked, and it would take me 7 months to learn to fly a titan. So how bad were his learning skills?

Don't forget the support skills and so on - its taking me around 10 months to finish training up my command ship (and I can get into it tonight) on my younger character. What he didn't mention was probably that while training for the really big or advanced ships you are also training to fly some of the less advanced on your way (example: command-ships result in you training for heavy assault ships and logistics ships by the end of the training period, and thats before battlecruiser 5 is needed for CS).

This is true. I just punched Titan 1 into EvEmon and it told me 7 months... So, add on capital ship modules.. yeah. Might be a leetle bit longer...

Ah yes, EVEmon. I don't know another game that has the kind of programs like EVEmon and EVE fitting tool. They have zero direct impact with the game but are external tools to help you work out optimum fittings and skill plans. Love them.

I don't remember what class it was, or what his skill set was, but I think he was specialising in mining or whatever, combat is too hard what with the security setup and all the launch players hanging out in the unpoliced areas.

ya, ive been playing EVE for about a year now. your not stupid for not liking it. eve is a love it or hate it game.

i personally like the non-instant gratification of the game, for the following reasons:

1. non-instant gratification goes hand in hand with not having to play it 24/7. the skills train in real time whether you are there or not. i went on a two week holiday and im about to have exams for two weeks. despite not touching eve in this time i will sitll come out the end being able to use stealth bombers. (hehehe, surprise 0.0 buttsecks ^_^).

in addition, im primarily an industrialist. that is, i mine, manufacture and invent. i can whack my mining barge on to mine ore, and come back in 10 mins to find its full. in the mean time i can do homework. same applies for ice mining but 30 mins instead of 10. i then take the minerals, manufacutre them, and once i finish that, i just sell them for a profit. it requires very little time on my part.

however, im one of those odd people who LIKES mining. its kinda like meditation. thus i spend an awful amount of time doing it.

2. it encourages community. the fact that theres very few moments of "fuck yea im awesome look at me go" (my first time in an abaddon was a bit like that) means your jollies come out of talking to people. the corp system and game depth provide an elegant system for bringing people together and giving them shit to talk about, as well as stuff to do together. it give a feeling of community that other mmo's ive tried lack.

the complexity i like as well. i love the fact that ive been playing for a year and a two week old player can still sometimes say stuff that makes me go "really, you can do that? no kidding?". in addition, the complexity keeps tards out.

you know those chaps who sit in WoW and keep going "LFG" all day long. the kind of people you avoid at all costs? yea, they dont last in eve.

they attack a battleship in their rookie ship in high sec, get WTFPWNED by concord and go "what is all this dross? im not having this!" and leave.

another thing, i love the free PvP aspect. there are, of course, some PvP actions i dislike, but the fact that you can do them i love. nowhere in eve is safe, except your hangar. if you are undocked, you can be killed. it adds an element of risk that you dont get in many MMO's.

i also love that fact that you can lose stuff in eve. you die in WoW, its kinda immaterial. you failed the dungeon, but you can always try again tomorrow. not so in eve. you die? you just lost your fantastically expensive ship! gonna take you a while to replace that.

if you don't keep your clone up to date, you can lose months of skill training in a single moment (when you get podded). this also adds an element of risk that i like.

finally, i like how the grind is variable. the only thing you need to grind to get is money. how much you grind depends on how much money you want.

its unlikely he was going for a mining ship, you can train all the mining skills in the game in less time then that (rorqual not included)

I enjoy EVE, just haven't had much time to play it lately.
I felt that the tutorial only helped you through enough to get the basic elements ... the rest you have to learn on your own, which isn't too hard. This is greatly helped by the "corp" chat, the corp that you start in is full of people who will answer whatever questions you have.

And someone said EVE gets boring quick if you're all alone basically and that is true...
I recently just started playing again and everyone in my corp that I broke off into don't get on anymore... Plus this Empyrean Age war... thing won't let me enlist for the military because my rating isn't good enough with my government -_-... some bullshit

Oh yeah and my ship is badass ---> Vigilant ^_^

I love eve, been playing for years now (though I'm quite sick of speed tanked ships in pvp [you know what I mean if you play])

BUT...

About the learning curve in eve... It is like a brick wall, and I don't think anything says it better than supercapitals. (except maybe invention, though at least with that you can get stuck in and test relatively cheaply not like a titan that will take you at least 8 weeks to build and cost you more than most people in the game will ever see)

There is no information about titans and motherships in the game or on the website, some of what you need to know is in the item descriptions but if you don't know the rest your not ready to fly the ships. Its not something you can pick up after you buy the ship.

I thought that i would love EvE, i was an avid freelancer player, and i enjoy both strategy games and MMO's, the thing is, with eve, i just got bored quite quickly, i was expecting something like mass effect or as before freelancer where you did what you did as opposed to clicking and waiting until its done, i admire EvE greatly, i just didn't really get into it.
