Okay . How can a console be fun . Better yet , how can a console be challenging? Are you talking about the games? Because there are like 2 exclusive games for the thing!

This sums it up quite nicely . Unless they make some mature games . I'm not interested . And i'm not talking about 3rd party games .

How can a console be fun and challenging? Especially challenging? It's a console! That's like saying this CD player has a good beat to it. It makes no sense.
Dammit ninja'd . And i thought i was being a smart ass .

No other company has managed to fool people into buying the same game again and again and again on such a massive scale as Nintendo. They are the perfect example of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" but the problem is they haven't realised the warning gauges are faulty.

They were great back in the SNES, Gamecube and N64 days... now they're too focused on force-feeding people tech demo after tech demo. I fear the upper management do not see outside of Japan very well and are happy with their stagnating business practices.

I came to the realisation recently that I don't hate Nintendo, they just don't make games for me anymore.

I still think it's ridiculous how often they release carbon-copies of their old games, but it's also good because it means a new generation will get to experience games like Super Mario 64 and be as blown away by it as I was fifteen years ago.

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, or just because I'm tired of arguing with people, but I'm beginning to understand, more and more, that not every game company is out to please me, and I'm alright with that.

Nintendo are fine. They're just not for me. I've never been one to cling to one studio.

And to say there is a lot of Nintendo hate on this site is going too far.
It's a mixture of indifference and fandom.

You enjoy Nintendo's latest products? I'm so happy for you. *sarcasm*

Was your opinion on those games meant to sway any one?

I must be one of those jaded cynics you're generalising. I believe they used to be great at what they did, and now I don't like what they do. Would you like me to a blanket statement about the fans of Nintendo? It's so easy. Wonder why I don't?

Why don't you lot go find a Nintendo fan forum where you can hear non stop Nintendo wanking every day? They really do exist.

Which is why sony/xbox (virtually identical) keep churning out shooter after shooter / sports game / racing game.
It's not just Japanese video game makers, everyone makes what is safe and familiar. This is seen in the music industry, fashion, etc, etc.

As long as I've still got at least one other console that understands what I want in a console is for it to get out of the way and let me play a game, I don't care what Nintendo do.
I had to dig out my Escapist account to reply to this... This console you speak of, that shuts up and lets you play your game, is the Nintendo one. The others are so up to their heads with achievements! trophies! messages! DLC! new releases! spend more money on Xbox Live Gold! and even more on PlayStation Plus! that it's soothing when I turn on my Wii U, boot up New Super Mario Bros. U or ZombiU and there's nothing to bug me, other than the mild social features in the games.

I'm not saying that the extra online features on the other consoles are bad. But if your favorite experience is "you and your game", it's the Nintendo system you're looking for.

As for the OT, I'm obviously still a big fan of Nintendo's work. I enjoy playing on my PS3 and my PC, but their offer of pure bliss gaming is much smaller than the Nintendo systems'. They might have more great games, but Nintendo still delivers my favorite ones. That's not to say I don't disagree with some of their decisions, of course.
Fair enough. I suppose my problem is less with Nintendo and whatever Shakespearian deprived monkey* they hire to make their controllers. Better?

EDIT- * this sounded like a much more clever expletive in my head.

EDIT EDIT - I just realized that my captcha text was "identity theft". In the theoretical infinite monkey + typewriter scenario, who thinks a reasonable case could be made for a copyright lawsuit? I think I'm going to look this up, I'll get back to you.

EDIT EDIT EDIT - From the brief amount of time I devoted to this subject before getting bored, I concluded that the monkeys would probably be free from liability, but that any profits from the sale or publication of their work would go to whomever currently holds the rights to the work in question. What is still up in the air is the liability of the scientists running the experiment, unless of course the monkeys were independent and working from funding from a private investor, in which case things become even more ambiguous, as it's possible to infer this was an incredibly inefficient con to circumvent international copyright law in a lucrative franchise.

I think the Wii and DS were stupid, but with the Wii U I think they're making a comeback.
I also think that the hate of them isn't confined to this website.

To echo some other posters, my taste in games has changed, while Nintendo's has not. For example in the OP you mention 3 IPs that you love, but they also happen to be almost as old as I am. I grew up with mario and he stopped by interesting about 10 years ago. I don't hate nintendo, but I recognize they dont make games for me anymore. I'm not into handheld gaming and I bought maybe 3 games for my Wii (Wii sports being the only game that got more than 20 hours of play), which suggests to me it's a company I'm not really a company striving for my business.

I feel I don't have the words to explain my feelings on Nintendo. I certainly don't hate them, but their games just don't do anything for me anymore. I can go back and play their old classics and have an amazing time, but the last game I played from them that felt like it was dedicated to the level of quality that I knew Nintendo for was Mario Galaxy. I didn't even like Mario Galaxy very much, it just wasn't a game made for me. Everything else feels like it's being made for people who don't really care about games. Skyward Sword included an option to watch tutorial videos on how to complete side quests. Side quests that were nothing more than a simple fetch quest where you talk to a NPC. Then the game had the open-world exploration of a ball of yarn.

Yet, as I state that, I feel it still falls short of explaining what the problem with Nintendo is today. Some people point their fingers at gimmicky hardware, which I disagree with. Other say that they are too kiddy, which is stupid, because they have always been all-ages. I think there is some intangible magic to what they were back in the 90's and how they approached game design that is lacking today. I mean, Super Metroid has some decent design going for it, and they recaptured much of it for Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission, but the little things, like the amazing sound in Super Metroid makes the game impact me far stronger than anything they are capable of putting out today.
Just some sample music.

The 3 games mentioned are not the same ol same ol, they were ruined.

Sticker Star went from an RPG franchise to an action/puzzle game. No one asked for that.

Kid Icarus has issues with controls and it's so bad that Nintendo included a stand in the box.

Skyward Sword could have been a fine game if not for the controls which makes the game unplayable for some people. This is a trend that started with Phantom Hourglass where they fucked up the controls by making them touch screen.

I think Nintendo needs different people making decisions. Sticker Star should have remained an RPG (they were developing it similar to Thousand Year Door until Miyamoto stepped in). If a HANDHELD GAME requires a stand, you take it back to the development staff and tell them to fix it. I hear the game is unplayable for lefties and that is why I never picked it up. Skyward Sword should have had an alternate control scheme for people who can't get the motion controls to work properly. Indeed, from what I read, the motion controls in Nintendo Land are much better but that just tells me the controls in Skyward Sword should have been better.

Rule of thumb I like, you are never the only one of anything.

I think Nintendo is fine myself, though I don't really hold any biases. If they make a game I think I'll like, I'll buy their stuff. If they don't, I don't. Same as any other game company.

Therefore, the Nintendo hate on the site is large. Almost anyone who talks about Nintendo hates on it. And only what's put on the site is on the site.

You've been here since 2008, longer than most users here on the Escapist, including myself.

Why did you choose to title your thread "Am I the only one X?"

We as a community have decided this many, many, many, many, times. You are never the only one. Ever.

And you never will be.

OT: I still like Nintendo. I don't let the opinions of random people on the internet change that, either.

I still like Nintendo, it's just that the Wii never really tingled my tastebuds with the controller overload. Same with the Wii U, only that I don't intend on ever getting one. Just have a look at the 'compatible with' section of every game, right on the back of the box: the plethora of available/required controllers is just not something I feel like wanting to have to put up with, ever again.

I love Nintendo, but the only money I currently spend on Nintendo fare is old games that are missing from our collection, so that's second hand and used games markets exclusively. Another thing of the past, but then again we absolutely won't be able to play any of those games that rely on online servers anyway. The optical drivers will die; the current generation will result in piles of dead hardware and games that might only work on emulators.

The Super Nintendos and Sega Megadrives will still work perfectly even when the next Next Gen consoles kick the bucket.
