Oh that's grand. You've earned a permanent probation for your acts of trolling. The reason you're here is to entertain the populace and eventually die.

Well, we've basically all but signed off control of the internet to every 10 year old and his grandma. A lot of people would rather post something they think is funny or clever such as "What video game character has the best tits?"

Ugh, I guess that's the price we pray for freedom of speech.

last time i posted what i considered a thoughtful post on niche games for niche gamers, it received something 14 views and zero responses.

Same thing happened to my blueberry garden review.

I should have titled all my posts "HOMOSEXUALS DOIN THE CREATIONISM JIGGLE" and rolled in the responses.

Kuliani gave a reason right there, Necro was screaming at everyone and everything and such broad-sweep flames against a community aren't tolerated. He had a history of other infractions and I imagine this was the straw that broke the camels back. Intelligent or not, spewing bile like a lawn-sprinkler is a punishable offence here.
How is that thread any less an attack on this community than this current one? Apart from a difference in tone, they are both stating what they think is wrong with the community. Necro was stating how we should be less hypocritical, and this thread is stating that we are slowly devolving into an idiot-fest.

Personally I find this thread much more insulting than Necro's, and I bet that if the OP had put up a few curse words and bold text he would have gotten a similar treatment.

Some are just badge farming, others are just too lazy to use the search bar and just start threads willy nilly. It's mainly newer members that post the repeat threads. Some we forgive, others we are harsh to.

So at risk of being flamed I've decided to post this little thing that I've noticed as of lately, now before you go looking at my "Member Since" date, please take into consideration that's only the amount of time that I've had an account and OFFICIALLY been around, I have been around quite a deal longer than that.

Back to the subject. It seems that as of lately I've noticed a decline in creative, intelligent posts. Maybe I'm being overcritical but it seems like everyday I'm greeted with a barrage of "Favorite (insert generic topic here)" threads along with, as of lately what appears to be an increase in trolling threads. Now that's not to say that there aren't intelligent posts, there are, it simply seems that they are, how do I say this? On the fast-track to becoming an endangered species. While browsing through some threads earlier, I found the post that a particular user was banned for, see the troubling part is, the post was intelligent, it had basis, and could have easily been a great discussion, but instead was locked and merited a ban apparently, I'm not sure exactly why, maybe I'm missing something. For those of you who have taken the time to think about what you post, thank you, it's a privilege to share a community with you.

Bout it,
-Unstoppable Wall
lulz, i posted 'bout the same topic a few months ago. Yeah, these guys dont care, and the ones that bother to reply are the ones we are whining about. Good try tho,

Oh please.

The Escapist is no better than any other gaming forum. We are not superior in any way.

I think it's fairly common to look back on the "Good ole' days" with rainbow glitter glasses. I've been here (under a different name) for about a year, and it hasn't changed dramatically, in fact, chances are you are all just growing up and the same level of discussion simply doesn't seem so insightful or intelligent as it did when you were a year or two younger.

I think for me however, in your support, the fact that threads get repeated daily makes it all seem a little tired, and it takes serious motivation to put the same level of energy into each weekly thread debating the merits of this or that while coming up with a fresh argument for it.

I don't feel the place has changed substantially and that, I believe is the problem, as most people do change over time.

I miss Necro...
He's been banned for just over six hours....
But it'll be kinda sad without him, though.
Should we have some sort of funeral thread?

Well lets see...The thing is that since you've lurked on the site for some time now, you've seen a lot of intelligent topics/discussions. There are only so many that can happen though. This can be a safe haven for topics of this nature, but when there are forums, there will be a certain amount of "favorite" topics that will come up. Not everyone can be as "creative" as you'd like them to be. I created a topic a month or so back, and it just became a bit of a flame fest between me and someone else on here. This in turn killed any (what you may deem) intelligent conversations.

You really shouldn't put too much faith in a forum anyways. Take part in the intelligent conversations and stay out of the ones that you think aren't worthy of forum time.

Also...theres always that one guy that "notices" this. And they always decide that a topic must be made about these atrocities. Trust me.

You'll find that the curse words and the tone were the point of the ban. You can question the community all you like so long as you remain civil and sensible, and would you call that post either of those things? No. He was banned because his thread wasn't like this one, it was a raging, uncontrolled and unecessary bout of immature screaming. Hence, he is no longer with us.

And Labyrinth is right. The problem is not the lack of quality. It's the fact that the quality is given less attention.

Report the Troll. Report the Spammer. Report the Derailer. Report the Banal. Report the Offensive. And above all, dont reply to any of them.

You want quality? Then you're going to have to earn it and reward it, and punish the filth. The only way to punish is them is to report and not respond, any post is support for them and their waste-of-space posts, and you have only yourself to blame for their popularity.

There's a decline in it, you're right. Someone stated it well up above; simple threads warrant less thought, less care, and the mods don't have to worry about intense flamewars sparking up because everyone is happy in their ignorant bliss.

I have to say that I'm against Necro being banned. He's been around almost as long as I have, and I don't see why he can't post a thread stating his discontent with the community. I'm sure he didn't make anyone burst into tears reading that. Hell, couldn't the mods at least have tried probation or telling him first?

I guess that part of the problem lies in that mods have to cater to the general community, be they intelligent or not; they can't make any decisions that will have people saying, "Hey, wait a second." Of course, you could turn that rationale around and ask why they ban veteran users who contribute loads to the forums, but I feel that doing so would just cause more problems.

I'm not saying we are 'superior' or anything, but I happen to like this forum as it is not filled with l33t-speak, trolls or the general depravity and idiocy of the anonomous-internet; even the flame-wars here usually involve some sort of argument and associated explanation of it.

When was Necro not on probation? As I stated, this was probably the final straw on the back of his already impressive rap sheet.

Necro may have been a friend, but nobody is above the rules.
