Swearing is useful. But when used all the time, it loses any meaning and just becomes pointless and.. Well, insulting and stupid, really.

But man. Every now and then, I just need to cuss and rage a little. Just to let off some steam.

I've read through the thread, and I'm just to lazy to quote everything I have an opinion on. So I'll just say it here (I know it means that people probably aren't going to know that there's even any activity on this thread. But that's okay) along with my response to this thread in general.
First off. I read that people say that "words don't hurt people". Well, yeah. Yes they do hurt people. Every person on earth can be hurt by words. It's just the point of how deep they let the words wander. There is allways a weak spot with everyone. If someone mentiones a truth about you, you do not like, you will be hurt. You will be angry. At least the word would have triggered an emotion. So words do, indeed, have an effect. It's just up to the individual how much.

As for me and swear words. I usually don't use swear words alot, so I don't have to moderate myself when in formal company. I do however have to fight the urge to use swear words in discussions and likes. Especially when I would like to emphasize the points. The reason why I do this is because the way I see it, your argument is less valid if you have to swear.

Let's take an example: If there is an argument about ... (Lack of imaginat.. Oh yeah!) Let's say communism. And the guy arguing for (And let's say I argue against) says this "Communism is a fucking great idea! If we'd have the fucking brilliant idea that communism is at work today, everyone would be happy as fucking hell!" then I would answer somewhere along the lines of "Dude. Communism is nowhere a good idea for our society the way it is. Have you not looked at the history lately? Take a look, and realise how awful that idea of yours is" opposed to if they'd sound more like this: "Communism is actually a rather good idea. I think everyone would benefit from it if we were to have communism at work instead of capitalism" then I'd be more like: "Yeah, you're right. Communism is a good idea indeed. The problem, however is that if we were to try and install that idea to our present society, we'd have rebellion and what not. The humans just aren't ready for this yet, after all the years under capitalism."
I tend to think of the arguer as a slightly more intelligent person if he tries to avoid swearing. As swearing can usually be traced back to lack of vocabulary.

The times were I do swear is if I'm accompanied with people with relaxed views on swearing, and it's something humor-ish about it, or if I'm really suprised. IE: "What the fuck, dude?" and "They all fucking hate you, mate :p".

In more serious sceonarios where I swear is if something is really serious, and beyond insane/really stupid IE: "What the fuck are you doing, fucktwit?!?". Note that this is if someone is trying to be funny by haveing an ignited lighter near my hair or something.

Perhaps I could point you all towards Wittgenstein's philosophy? That words ARE just sounds, which we use to communicate. It's the individuals choice as to whether they let it offend them.
Well. No .. That's wrong. Would you not say that this is words? And yet someway this what I'm writing is not sounds. Wich would mean that words are not sounds.
Don't worry. I do get what you mean, though. I still disagree. We use words in our thoughts, we use words to express, do define. Words are more than merely means of communicating. Words are our world. In a given situation, words can make you heart shatter, and they can make you glee like a baby out of happiness. Words have a much deeper meaning to it thatn just the communication part.

People who get offended by simple words really need to get over it. Ok words can hurt, but only when oh someone you considered a mate says to you he thinks your "using" your girlfriend. Saying "Fuck You" to someone is really meaningless and nobody gets offended by it these days.

Personally I tend to use swearing as a release for frustration. The amount of times I've had an umpire warn me about swearing, especially when down by a few. Swearing as a form of abuse, is also a release of frustration, and they could be seen as verbal violence, instead of hitting a wall or person I yell and swear (at a wall or person). It's surprising how saying "Fucking ****!" a few times can calm a person down.

Swearing is when posh people decided that the language that "lessers" were using is uncouth, and frankly I don't give a fuck about it. Preaching that swearing is bad is pathetic, it doesn't mean that somewhere in the world someone dies because you said dick.

Also, any word can be offensive, depending on the context that it's used in.

But they're still offended by simple words. Just not swearing. So I say yes. Swearing can hurt people. Oh and I'm quite certain you're not the only one swearing to get rid of anger. I'm in that group too.

Also. deliciously delightful it is that this thread must be the one thread I've seen with the most swearing? [insert swear-word here]
