Maybe I'm just awesome, but I haven't really found a fighting game that I didn't start to pick up after at most a few matches. Not like tournament skill, or anything, but just being comfortable with the system and movesets.

The only possible exception might be Virtua Fighter, but even that's not bad after a while.

I used to be like that OP. It makes sense that the only fighting game I've ever really liked is UMVC3. I know I wouldn't have put the time into it if I didn't have the "must get better with Phoenix Wright" fanboy mindset hanging over me. Crossovers ftw

And yeah the bullshit combos are annoying, people complain about my forward + heavy spamming Ammy (technically medium THEN forward + heavy spam,) but would it make you feel any better if I beat you with a 100 hit Ammy only with assists wtf was that type combo?

The way i see it i'm giving you a chance to respond rather than combo locking you like a *****. If you can't block, advance guard then counterattack then sorry bro, it's your problem.

And if you really must complain, just console yourself with "at least it's not FOOT DIVE! spamming Doom again..."

That's why Phoenix Wright is such a boss, Turnabout + Lvl 3 X Factor does so much damage per hit. I can just do the basic 6 or so hit combo and if he survives that just throw some evidence beams at him from across the screen to finish him.

Oh there was a patch today wasn't there? Did that nerf Wesker by any chance? It might have given PW's Assist super armour. I swear he walked through the occasional projectile unharmed like in the good old days but still got hit out of it by other stuff.

oom has no other moves( and this is coming for a guy who plays as morrigan also) !As a doom player , i cannot do ANYTHING ELSE , he has no way to get close , he has no teleport and his dash is shit , he has like 2 beams and he throws some rocks . Plus foot dive never works , since everyome knows to high block it . Hes no dormamu thats for sure .

OT: i could never get into ANY SC game because it's a) slow paced and b) too fucking complicated. I don't know which SC game you played that was easy to pick up . Try UMVC3 , face paste , decent missions , easy cpu ( until youget to very hard difficulty) and online is a blast id you don't mind losing the first 100 matches because the matchmaking is shit . They even have a simple mode for people that have trouble.

I hate Fighting games as well. You know, except for Super Smash Brothers.

That one holds a special place in my heart. :3

You keep mentioning combos, and yet SC is one of the least combo reliant fighting games out there. It's also one of the easiest to just pick up and play with no previous knowledge because of it's reliance on single moves and short move strings as opposed to special moves and combos.
actually this is the reason I love soul calibur (and to a lesser extent Super smash bros.) because I can actually play these games with my friends without forcing them to go into training and learn their entire move-set.

make sure you're blocking (it's pretty important) and if you get into a position where you can't block (on the ground) try rolling sideways or bacwards depending if the enemy is using a lot of horizontal or vertical attacks.

You might also have an ability to attack while 'rising' you might want to look into that.
The only fighting games I excel at are Soul Calibre (specifically #2) and Super Smash Bros games. The controls are simple enough, it is not combo reliant, and characters are pretty well balanced.
As soon as it gets into Street Fighter kind of combo magic or Marvel vs. Capcom, I am completely out to lunch.
I see videos of pretty bad players linking combos from 1 character to the next to the next, defeating enemies without them touching the ground. Then I see how I play... I can only combo that well when I button-mash like a monkey chewing the controller.

OP: there is a fighting game for everyone, just like there is a racing game for everyone, an RPG for everyone, etc.
You just have to find that specific niche or go ask that friend of yours that plays way too much SF4 for tips on how to start playing, how to combo, what characters are good for you, etc.

I still don't get Doom, is he supposed to be a keepaway character? But why would a keepaway character have a basically unpunishable homing FOOT DIVE! Attack? Do you need to get in with all the beams he has? Not to mention he has hands down the best assist in the game (you know the one.)

It's like how Ghost Rider is really good at range and close up, until you get far away enough where he can't do shit(seriously you get corner to corner and he has to go on the offensive, especially against Phoenix Wright)... The fuck does that work?

Oh go and play Phoenix Wright for a second then tell me Doom's dash is terrible...

And I'd love to play Morrigan but I get too excited over the whole "flying" thing, gets me killed all the time. Like how i need to stop teleporting Rocket Raccoon around the screen every two seconds just because I can.

But it's nice how all the characters have their own little quirks and variations (for example, Wesker's quirk is "broken as fuck"), not just "here's your standard, rushdown, keepaway, zoning etc etc characters now fuck off cuz we've run out of ideas" type thing.

Both of Doom's FOOT DIVES are extremely punishable unless you cancel them into airdashes, which requires at least some timing. Just saying. And yeah I agree with krazykidd that Doom can have serious trouble getting in at times as a fellow Doom player. I'll give you the "best assist in the game" part though.

I LOVE fighting games, love them to bits. Dissidia 012, UMVC3, SSBB, all some of my fav games. What I hate is when people use the same characters with the same combos over and over and over and over and so on and so forth. Yes, I get it, you have great muscle memory and your moves are really flashy, now go back the character select screen, pick someone other tahn the overpowered du jour and LET ME FIGHT BACK!

Agreed. Vergil is a great character, but he also has weaknesses.

Dante and Wesker are a clusterfuck of super safe moves and stupid hitboxes.

Also, black is totally the wrong costume.

He matches Ammy brilliantly :D

Well doom's footdive is punishable as soon as you block it . He has two beams , a straight beam and a "finger" beam ( that does little damage ), and that molecular bullshit he does that serves little purpose i find . His assist is really good , but leaves him VERY vulnerable . Basically if you don't foot dive , you have to play keep away , but that results into spaming his beams . So unless you like beam spaming , foot dive is all he can really do .

Oh and for morrigan , she has air dash , soul fist and some shoryuken kinda move , just be creative with your dashing .oh and dash S Is your best friend .

But then you can see him in the helicopter stage with that costume :(

I only play that team and stage to annoy my friends though, otherwise I usually go with Dante, Virgil and then either Ammy or Trish. I'll also trick my friends by randomly swapping Dante's and Virgil's colors >:D Amazingly they still put up with me.

They will but it looks like you're the only one who thinks they'll keep coming back [/bad joke]

---

Remember the Zero Punctuation for Soul Caliber 4? Did they take away the ability to throw your opponents because apparently that was the easiest way to break the game. I really loved Soul Blade in the arcades and, Soul Caliber on the Dreamcast but I fell out with the series around the PS2 era. It's too bad there are so many negative threads about the thing...maybe they should have added more than just Ezio.

Also: no fighting game is a frustrating/ infuriating/ impossible as the original Mortal Kombat 3. I just got it for the PSX last month and I can't make it to the third fight...on easy mode. I did well enough on Mortal Kombat 2 on the SNES and, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 but the original MK3 is just brutal.

Maybe playing Ammy at the time makes the foot dive harder to punish, she is pretty small. The guy I was playing against was foot dive spamming HARD though... Like instantly going into flight mode and foot diving then flight then foot dive etc etc. Like he didn't know how to start a combo unless it began with FOOT DIVE! No lasers or anything either. Usually I just block it then he tries something more close range and it goes from there. But no. He needs moar foot divez

I've decided to play Dante instead of Rocket Raccoon. His coolness is outmatched by his squishiness.

Totally not influenced by this video... Like at all

I kinda need someone with combat potential, good assists, decent health and someone who isn't on the villains side cuz PW would never work for the bad guys! Therefore Dante (probably should go Dormy but y'know evil and all that.)

Yeah, people don't just fail, but phail to realize that "You are never the only one!" applies to EVERYTHING.

OT: I hate fighting games, only one's I'll play are the Super Smash Bros. Series. because it's simple enough to play for me. no memorizing countless combos, just a, b, up+b, down+b, shield, jump, move.

May i suggest captain america? Especially if you play with ammy , i find their assists compliment each other. I don't knos the names of their moves , but captains otg sheild throw thinggy is amazing ( hits both front and back and i believe its a otg move) and ammys ice move could make for an interestint combination and a nice mix up. I believe it's nearly unblockable if timed right.

YOU ARE NEVER THE ONLY ONE!
When someone asks "Am I the only one...", it is a fucking expression. Have you ever heard someone say, out of frustration, something along the lines of "this is so difficult, I think I'm going to kill myself." Have any of you then gone up to that person and said "HEY, DON'T KILL YOURSELF, THAT'S A BAD IDEA!" No, of course you haven't, because that would be retarded. What about when somebody really wants something, and they say "I would give anything to have that" - do you really think these people would be willing to give anything? No, of course they wouldn't; everyone who has ever heard that expression knows that, but we don't bother being pedantic and pointing that out, because we are aware of that fact that they are purposefully speaking in a figurative manner for the sake of emphasis.

Likewise, when someone uses the "Am I the only one..." as a means of emphasizing a particular sentiment, responding with "of course you aren't the only one" is both pointless and redundant. Of course they aren't the only one - they already know that. All they are saying is that, from their perspective, they have a particular belief or viewpoint which seems to be shared by virtually nobody they themselves know. It is this feeling which prompts the use of the phrase "Am I the only one..."

So, next time you see a thread like this, actually think before you post something like "you are never the only one", and consider whether or not that is really worth posting. As a side note, my apologies to those of you whose posts I edited. I'm aware that some of you posted something more substantial than what I quoted.
