Am I the only one who realizes achievements are worthless?

I have never, ever, seen anyone talk down to someone about not having an achievement
The real question is, how many times have you seen people bragging about their achievements or about a particular achievement they found hard? huh huh? ;)
WoW, it happens daily.

Plus it can make for some fun wagers - first to 1000 points wins the pooled money
That... Is genius. I might see about doing this with a bunch of mates after our next project - rent a brand new game and throw in a fiver, first to the Platinum gets the pot! Cheers for the idea, we've been looking for a way to waste a week playing games :p
Hope it's good mate. I've mainly done that as friendly online community competitions (dam American release date advantages) but if I had people about willing to do that I'd go for it. Also we found that some games need the rules tweaked (example in the Red Dead Redemption comp the highest multiplayer rank one was excluded as it would take too long/involve boosting)

I disagree, OP. I know achievements are used as hollow bragging rights, but from my perspective achievements encourage me to get the most out of my game. For example collecting all of item A in a certain game, or completing this sidequest etc
I can look at my achievements and say "yes! I worked hard for that, and there's my proof!"
Not for bragging rights but for my own satisfaction. I think they're just a nice addition/incentive when playing games

If you're a completionist scrub like me and like to squeeze every ounce of playtime out of a game as you can, then achievements are a godsend. Of course they don't really earn you anything but they're far from pointless. The point is to give you more to do inside the game.

What? Didn't you know? You can exchange your gamer points for money at your local bank. It's totally awesome.

I hate achievements. More than anything, it's a devolution in gaming. I thought we'd moved past "points" as the driving force behind this hobby. Apparently not.

If I ever meet someone who gives two shits about achievements, I will laugh uncontrollably in his face. If it's a girl, I'll probably ask her out.

Their ONLY saving grace: devs occasionally think up funny names for them.
I don't see how it is a "devolution" of anything. You can either go for them or not, it's your choice.

I will say this though, I think giving the achievements an arbitrary point value is stupid, especially because there is no way to standardize it. A developer could make a super hard achievement get you 20 points, but then another developer make it you you can get 1000 points in the first 2 minuets of the game with little or no effort on your part.

I prefer the way Steam does it, each achievement is just an image and a description and the value it has is entirely what you, the player, gives it. If it was an achievement you thought was super hard to get you will personally value it more then one that you thought was easy.

It's not a forced devolution, you're right. I'm free to ignore them, and I do. But whenever they pop up, I still think to myself "Heh... I stopped caring about arbitrary 'points' about 15 years ago".

I enjoy them. They give you something fun to do after you've already beaten the game, and give you a (figurative) shiny medal for completing said challenge.

Sure, they may not do anything, but honestly, neither does playing the rest of the game. They both simply provide optional entertainment.

Well, like I said, I think the point thing is stupid but a large portion of the people who go for achievements don't care about the points.

For a lot of people they go for achievements because it gives them a reason to try things in the game that they normally wouldn't care about (such as using a different weapon then they normally do or playing a game as an evil character as opposed to only playing as a good guy) and they only care about "thousand pointing a game" because it means they had done just about everything there is to do in the game. It gives you the sense that you truly "finished" the game.

I love achievements - trophies ensure that I keep gaming, and even if I'm dealing with a system where the achievements produce no benefit whatsoever, such as Steam, they're still fun little challenges to tackle.

Yes most achievements are worthless. But some are interesting and are difficult to get and/or silly. Those are the ones I like.

They appeal to the uber-competitive people who MUST prove themselves the best. That's OK with me, it keeps them busy and offline, and out of my hair while I'm having, y'know FUN!, with my friends.

Back in my day ( in old man voice) we didn't have no fancy acheiver-mants. Nope, games just gave us cheats to make the game more fun once we finished it (Goldeneye is the best example)

I like it when you get them for doing something really wacky that has no actual point. I always feeling its like a high five from the developer going "yeah we thought that'd be pretty funny too".

That said I'm not too bothered bout the number crunching ones but they're milestones in their own right and I think people like to be patted on the back if they've done something particularly tricky multiple times (i.e. it wasn't just a fluke you managed to do it the first time).

When I first got my xbox and I started to get achievements, I asked my friend, "What do I do with these points?" He looked at me all funny and said "nothing." I wanted to redeem them for microsoft points  but I guess they're a big part of instant gratification and keeping people happy on something. The Escapist gives bagdges for doing things, sorta like achievements.

Meh. Achievements can be fun thing to go for after you've completed the game. It's a little added replay value.
