Am I the only one who realizes achievements are worthless?

But we need achievements to show off the size of our internet dick!

To be honest, I really don't care about them, but I have seen people on live who talk down to people with a lower gamerscore.
HEY! It's called an e-peen.

OT: Yeah, but they're kind of a measurement of skill... Or luck... Or ability to bring several people together with the same goal of getting an achievement/trophy.

I don't wanna brag, but I have a bigger gamer penis than you (catch that reference?). I like achievements but I don't go out of my way to get them. When I get them I usually go "oh cool, another achievement".

They're not worthless, they provide an ongoing sense of accomplishment as you progress. Whether you care or not is another thing, but even if you don't like them, they're harmless.

It's a non-issue, really.

What's the difference between finishing a game and feeling satisfied, and getting an achievment and feeling satisfied? In my mind nothing (especially when the achievment is for finishing the game!), except that with achievments you have something to show for it and a notch on the bedpost for you e-peen.

I must admit at the moment I feel compelled to get the achievments in games, but I'm enjoying playing them anyway so it doesn't matter to me.

I am a self proclaimed achievement whore, let me say this now.
YOu seem to look for some sort of universal value for them. There is none. People who mock achievements take them too seriously. Collecting achievements has as much point as collecting stamps, dolls, card, or anything else, but require you to DO something (for the most part).
I collect them because I like collecting, but they also motivate me to do things I would not. I beat DOOMII COMPLETLY on Ultra-Violent difficulty. Why? Achievement. Would I have done it for no achievement? Likely not.
They are aslo informative. I like having a list of the things Ive done available for people to see, I like seeing what others have done. I aslo feel I have completed a game better if I get all of them.

If I had xbox live I could buy pretty much every single DLC out there with my points total. But I don't, because I object to spending almost £70 on a little device that allows me the privilege of connecting my 360 to Microsoft's hallowed gaming heaven, something that isn't necessary due to the wireless internet in my house that I use, for free, for my DS and Wii. And lets not even get started on the monthly subscription fee.
Fuck Microsoft.

Obligatory sarcastic comment: Yes, you are the only one.

Achievements are simply a ploy developed by the industry to sell more games, and quite frankly I don't give a rat's patootie about em. I think I had just as much fun playing games before they existed.
But they exist in an attempt to increase a games lifespan, so surely that has the opposite effect?

When people ask me how much I loved Oblivion and Fallout 3 I often will simply ask them to check my gamerscore. I like them because if I meet someone playing multiplayer I can figure out what kind of games they play and what kinds the really, truly love.

Also, they help me find out which of my friends I should ask for advice. Like my buddy who has 100% on Skate is a reliable source to ask how the hell I actually can do anything it that game. If you look at my gamerscore you can also see how much his advice helped me.

I only like achievement when I don't try to achieve them and they are associated with something awesome.
Lets say you pull off an awesome move in a game and get an achievement for it, it feels pretty awesome and surprising.
On the other hand, the "play 50 hours" or "kill 100,000 of x" or "get 5,000 kills with x weapon" are really really stupid.
And achievement grinding can't keep me interested or entertained at all.
This, I'm typicially indifferent to them, but when you get "coolest thing ever" in brutal legend, without expecting it, you really can't help but smile. They can be a nice addition to a game, if they laugh at themselves are are implemented as a bit of a joke, if they are in any way serious they are worthless imo.

As for steam including them, I think it was good, they actually add to the gameplay in TF2 as it influences item unlocks, which while grindy, is somewhat cool as they at least serve a purpose. I'm not ever a huge fan of offline levelling in multiplayer games, but TF2 is the one example of a game that isn't completely unbalanced because of it.

I agree wholeheartedly with the fact that achievements are worthless, especially when on Steam there's no gamerscore or equivalent e-peenery to make them "matter".

But they do make a handy little list of goals the player can set for himself.

anc[is]I just read the latest Experienced Points, and he puts achievements in the list of things steam gives us. Now I'm not saying anything bad about the article or Shamus, but once again I facepalmed and sighed. Who cares? They do absolutely nothing. I have never, ever, seen anyone talk down to someone about not having an achievement, and considering this is the internet, that's astounding. I just wanted to know if there was anyone out there who agrees with me.
they're hardly a negative, but they're not something to really seek out. just be happy to receive them when you do.

My positive personal experience with achievements was in Team Fortress 2, I had a REALLY good run as a Medic charging this Heavy, we just went on a fucking rampage, pushed the enemy right back into the spawn perfect application of the uber charges, god damn it we killed so many, while how was mowing them down I was calling out threats as they appeared.

Then when it all went quiet, there were all dead and waiting to re-spawn or too afraid to come out. We both congratulated each other on a brutal rampage:

*plink- cheers!*
???
"Achievement unlocked: Continuous Revolution"

That was nice, it was not an achievement we were whoring for, we were just playing the game it was meant to be played but skill, luck and teamwork meant we achieved something exceptional, and the game recognised that and ultimately made it more memorable for me.

But achievements and trophies for banal things like "collect a 100 pointless tokens" or "you completed a level, woo-fucking-hoo, here's a medal for doing the bare minimum" don't interest me. That's jsut seems to follow the circular logic "Achievements are recognition of good things in gaming ,therefore achievements are good... even if awarded for bullshit".

You know we all have those "great gameplay experiences" you know when you just pull off amazing feats, sometimes it can be all too easy to miss them in the rush to move on but if you get an amazing killstreak or stupendous save, the game pausing to recognise that emphasises the experience. Makes it more memorable.

But that's mainly for the more "arcady" games, I'd totally understand if a game was going for an immersive experience it may be better not to have generic icons popping up all the time. I mean some games work very hard to reduce/eliminate the HUD, that can be spoiled.

And getting recognition with achievements/trophies for completing a level??? Again, STOP DOING THIS Mr developers guys, it's pointless, the game already bookends levels and chapters and recognises player achievement, icons are not needed there. Maybe an achievement award on finally completing the entire game after the credits, award an achievement depending on difficulty level.

I think they're pointless. Yea some give you stat boosts or an item but so what? Not going to run around saying "oh look I got the For the Alliance achievement and got this bear mount." Just another why for gamers to stroke their own egos.

No...no, you're not. They're..hm...how to put it?

Achievements are nice to have. It's like...it's kinda cool to see that little achievement notification pop up when you've done something cool; however, achievements shouldn't be something you should try for over, and over, and over again. They should be things you let happen, or attain through luck.

Honestly achievements do actually add to the fun of a game. How would you feel that you had accomplished something if you didn't get a reward of Gs for finishing Halo 3 on Legendary?

Depends on the achievement itself I find. The Assassin's Creed achievements for collecting flags and feathers from every corner of the game seem pointless to me. The other ones, like tripping up 4 guards with one spear sweep, are fun and taught me things I didn't know I could do (I forgot to talk to the weapon trainer guy).

Hah, before I got XBL I used to think getting Achievements counted as Microsoft points.
