Am I the only one who realizes achievements are worthless?

Are achievements worth nothing? Yeah, pretty much. But I have fun with them, they're a little mini-quest in their own right.
I agree. Achievements/trophies are rewards for completing a certain criteria in a game, either to mark that you've reached a certain point in the game, or done something the game developer wanted to see if you could do it.

For Steam-based games, it can also be used a measure of difficulty or a player's understanding of the game (or any part of it): "is this too complicated, or is this too simple?" (the 300 antlion grubs comes to mind, or even the "tiny rocket man" one).

However, if the achievements are too gimmicky or simple to get (Imagine a digital monopoly where you got an achievement for every time you passed "Go" and collected 200 dollars), it gets boring or just inane after a while.

However, each to his own when it comes to achievements.

You...you mean I'm not some godlike prodigy that would make Jeebus envious of me for beating the first level? Bu...but the game told me I was! *sobs*

Come on, who cares about achievements? It's a cool moment when that little box pops up, but I usually forget about it after that. The fact that most achievements are of the form "Beat enemy/level X" doesn't help much...

They encourage replayability and experimentation - I don't see why everyone bitches about them.

Achievements are the sprinkles on a doughnut, the doughnut is fine without them but... sprinkles! :)

However not every game should have achievements, if the game needs immersion like an RPG then it would just be a distraction, a relatively shallow shooter can only benefit though.

I don't like achievements because they reduce the number of noteworthy things I can do while rarely giving me ideas for cool stuff. They rarely include cool self imposed challenges. Places where they do work are games like Geometry Wars 2, where it gets you to do things you wouldn't normally think of as a challenge, like the "Wax on Wax off" achievemnt.

Ultimately everyones life is pointless, because, eventually, you will die; and even if you are remembered for a long time as a innovator or a hero, at some point, the earth or the universe will come to an end and every memory of you will be gone; with every effect you've had on the universe have so little impact it'll be almost unnoticable. Achievements give us something to do while waiting for that to happen ^^.
