I've played and loved every GTA game, from the top down playstation 1 games, to the 3D III, Vice city & San Andreas. Even IV was a good game in my eyes, I don't understand why that game gets so much flak.

I love GTA. I was a little disappointed in GTA 4, the car handling was pretty awful, and while the city had an immense amount of detail there wasn't much you could do in it, it was a huge technological leap that set the bar high for practically all of gaming. Most games today can't even get to that level.

That said, I'm hoping that GTAV won't be another huge technological leap as much as it will be everything 4 SHOULD have been, fun, with tons of stuff to do. Like Saint's Row 2.

Also, there's no way you're the only one who loves anything. I'm pretty sure even those obscure, racist shitware games are loved by their creators and like 1 other person. Nevermind a huge title like GTAV, which is now the most expensive game ever made, I'm pretty sure you're not alone in your love of it.

(Even if most of the people who like it are stoners who play it for 15 minutes on Saturdays)

I have lived and breathed GTA for over a decade now. I have played and owned literally every single one of he games. Owning both the psp and ps2 versions of the Stories spin offs, Chinatown wars on iOS, and 100%d all of them. San Andreas was probably the pinnacle of my gaming career. Then... GTA IV happened. Suddenly the gunplay and driving were more frustrating than fun. And being nudged by a car during a firefight caused you to stumble for a minute, getting shot he whole time and even the bump takes a big portion of yur health. The game just wasn't as fun. I still 100%d and the dlc's but... My heart wasn't in it. By hen, I'd moved on to ssaints row, which was the proper sequel san Andreas needed. Now though, with 5, I'm back in and waiting, excitedly. This had better be the sequel I was waiting for since SA because even a diehard rockstar junkie like me can only handle so much disappointment.

There is a guy on my facebook news feed who is head over heels excited for GTA V.

So no. Unless you are he, then there are at least two of you.

I love me some GTA. While the chases and shootouts are a blast, I often just love going for a drive and exploring the cities. Especially online with a bunch of mates.

Ok. I worded this wrong. I should've instead ask WHO likes GTA on this site. I know I'm not the only one, just wondering who else.

Escapist rule #1: Never use the phrase "Am I the only one..." you're just asking for lots of sarcastic and annoying comments, that stop being funny after the second one.
Escapist rule #2: Don't talk about the Escapist(Look how original I am lolololol)

OT: I was never allowed to play GTA as a kid so the only one I have properly played is IV, which I found to be quite "meh". I have pre-ordered GTA V though because it sounds awesome and I had some credit on GMG that has been sitting there through like three PC game sales.

I played them all actually, starting from the top-down ones. I get there's a lot of disappointment about GTA4, but then again it did sell 20 MILLION copies, so I can't imagine the disappointment was too glaring. I liked GTA4, but I will admit it was an interesting experiment by Rockstar. To this day I think they saw the success and acclaim of Red Dead Redemption and tried making a more serious GTA game. It DID work, it just wasn't what everyone really wanted, and it came with a lot of additions that really didn't work like the playdate system.

GTA4 was made during a time when Rockstar and Volition were doing what they could to distance themselves. I think once Saints Row went as clownshoes as it did, Rockstar realized they didn't have to make GTA nearly that serious since Volition jumped off the Silly Cliff.

Truthfully unless something drastically changes, no one will ever be able to catch up to GTA's success. They have too big of a fanbase, and they're able to spend too much money on their titles for any one publisher to match their success... not without taking a gigantic, potentially fatal financial risk. The only complaint I've heard about GTAV is that the online component shouldn't be there. I don't see why not, it's not like online in GTA4 hurt the game as a whole. In fact, they're taking a part of GTA4 people seemed to really like and flesh it out further. It's not like they're shrinking the single player experience, but rather adding a co-op component to it that previously Volition only offered. I am REALLY looking forward to seeing how it works out... hell, part of me really would love to have co-op in the single player game. How awesome would it be for you and two buddies to pull off the single player heists instead of you having to micro-managed it all yourself? I know it's in the online component too, but tackling the actual scripted heists in the game I think would be even more fun.

You mean one of the most critically acclaimed and best selling video game franchises of all time?

You're the only one.
Yes, but clearly all that critical acclaim is for killing cops and hookers, so it doesn't count.

I know most people have played and liked GTA, but does anyone love it like I do? For more than just running over hookers and cops, but for being one of the greatest gaming experiences of all-time. I love the cities, music, style, characters, humor, freedom, and for combing all of those for an amazing game. Am I alone?
It's never "just you". That has to be internet rule number one. Never. Not ever. And especially not when you're talking about a franchise that is easily in the top 3 gaming franchises of all time.

Beyond my personal bias to that particular meme however, and more on topic to your point; Yes, I do enjoy GTA's particular brand of satire and parody coupled with their solid gameplay and sandbox approach. To the point that I've played every game, many of them multiple times. Obsessively collecting hidden packages and memorizing fictional street layouts and the whole bag.

San Andreas is still the gold standard by which I judge not only other GTA games, but open-world or sandbox games in their entirety. And very few have managed to reach "GTA: San Andreas" levels of greatness in their story, tone, and just straight up dedication to their theme.

I'll close by saying that even though I did not care for GTA4, it was never because I was tired of GTA. Just that I didn't care for the world they made for Niko to live in, or Niko as a character. And while a lesser series might see me be less interested in it after "the one I didn't like", I'm fully on board for GTA5 and have been since it was announced.

I never liked GTA at all and found it quite boring after the novelty of the first one wore off with me. All my friends who played it just stuck in cheats and went on rampages which I always found very boring. I have also never really liked the missions in GTA either as they always recycled a lot but in a way that ended up annoying me.

Well, I know I loved the hell out of them when I was younger, but not because I could kill people and blow shit up. In fact, some of it amounted to me liking just exploring, seeing what I could and couldn't use and enter, and sometimes doing mundane tasks like driving around "legally" (as legal as I knew as a kid, which just amounted to doing whatever the NPC drivers were doing). When I stripped away the gory aspects of the game, it became a way to experience stuff I couldn't otherwise, like driving around town, getting a job (like the taxi side mission), buying stuff. San Andreas probably opened up the most possibilities in this regard. I pretty much never played the game story missions, largely due to the fact that I had no attention span for following stories until I was about 15.

Now, going back to these games, I still like them, but perhaps not with as much wonder as I did as a child. (child meaning 11-15, it's not like I was playing these as a 6 year old or something). GTAIV I've still never beaten, mainly because I only own the PC port, and even after 4-5 years of system upgrades, I can still barely run at 30FPS in some areas, and that just really bugs me.

I'll admit, my current opinion of the GTA series has fallen a bit, and not because I thought GTAIV was bad (I just said I've never played through the entire game), but because it hasn't really introduced much to the sandbox game that I can't already experience in other games, Saints Row being an obvious one, but also Sleeping Dogs and a few others. I'm really hoping GTA5 can restore some of my child like wonder, with the world supposedly being so large, detailed, and littered with things to do. I mean, probably by the time a PC port comes out, I'll be old enough to legally drink, and that realization makes me hope that I can hold onto some of that child youth before society completely beats it out of me.

I'll probably get in trouble for this, and it will most likely be pulled before anyone can see it, but screw it. Look what was leaked online!
That was brilliant and somehow incredibly true. The thing i like most about GTA is that they have always been unbiased, if they offend one group you can guarantee they will also offend the opposite group. Fingers crossed for an "impotent rage vs republican space rangers episode"

Nope, you're not :)

I never got into 1 and 2, but 3, Vice City and in particular San Andreas will always be in my mind exemplary examples of open world gaming done right. Never got into IV, but V looks to be amazing if the hype train is to be trusted. (I mean, It never really is, but heres hoping)

My personal adoration for the series died off after GTA 3.
1 and 2 were my favourites in the series by a long shot.
Go replay GTA I and tell me it's your favourite. I'll bet my left nut that's not gonna happen, my friend.

Well considering I'm really looking forward to finally playing GTA5 next week I guess that can only mean the previous games didn't disappoint. :p Each GTA game introduced something different that gave each game a unique identity, from the 80's parody of Vice City to the grim urban struggle of GTA4. Each GTA is also an often brilliant satire of it's time, and I can't wait through what filter GTA5 will try and capture the Zeitgeist. The improvements in gameplay have my hype levels through the roof!
