This might make me sound petty... but what are your thoughts on Halo, if you've played it? See, I can't figure out what makes Half-Life 2 so great either...SageRuffin said:Half-Life 2 - The pinnacle of sci-fi FPS' it may be, but I just can't get into it, try as I might.
I've played the first 2 games and, to be blunt, I say the games are overrated. In fact, I didn't noticed how basic and simplistic the gameplay was until I was watching some friend's play 3. At this point, I care about Halo for one thing only: new Red vs Blue episodes (if any, I think it's safe to assume that the series is officially over).OhJohnNo said:This might make me sound petty... but what are your thoughts on Halo, if you've played it? KotOR hasn't aged very well, and I'm only one of many, many people who will tell you that. The system it uses is fine and dandy until you stack it up against sci-fi RPGs of today (like the aforementioned Mass Effect, different gameplay mechanics or otherwise) - then it turns into a bit of an easy, turn-based, point-and-click mess.OhJohnNO said:OT: With KOTOR I lasted up until the first big city place before the hammy voice acting, confusing map, boring combat and irritating mechanic of having to loot the piles of dead enemies manually drove me back to Mass Effect. If looting by hand is a standard feature of RPGs, then I want to stay the fuck away from most RPGs - it's incredibly boring and tedious, I like how Mass Effect pretty much does it for you.
With regards to Halo: I think everyone agrees it's overrated, but we all disagree on how much. No game (except maybe Homeworld... nah, even that has its few flaws actually) deserves perfect 10s. If I were asked, I'd give most Halo games a 9.0 or something. I love them, I think the combat is great, but the critics seem to like it a bit too much. Then again, it works the other way too - it's overhated to a far greater extent than it deserves. Also, I heard RvB are doing a new series right now or something - or at least, just finished one (Really need to watch season 3...).SageRuffin said:I've played the first 2 games and, to be blunt, I say the games are overrated. Which is a shame, because it's one of the better Star Wars games made, and arguably (key word: arguably) the game that got BioWare its well-deserved reputation.
Agreed, mostly. I'm a bit of a realist, so coming across a game that has reviews higher than an even 9 tends to ignite skepticism. Sometimes they're justified, but not always.OhJohnNo said:With regards to Halo: I think everyone agrees it's overrated, but we all disagree on how much. That's the thing. KotOR is one of those "great for its time" type of games. Now with BioWare and the gaming community at large having bigger and arguably better things on their respective plates, KotOR (and the second, for that matter) is now a relic from a time long past.OhJohnNo said:KOTOR did strike me as a game that would have been cooler if I'd played it when it originally came out. As it was, Mass Effect felt better in every way - plus, it took place in an original and vibrant sci-fi universe, rather than Star Wars. I mean, Star Wars is great, but I absolutely adored sorting my way through the wonderful background Bioware had created. The Codex was my favourite part of the game, alongside the Mako.
