Before the fan boys come out, the winner of this contest has already been decided... It's a draw. Really it does not matter for this gen whether you get an ATI or Nvidia card. Which ever you get, you win. That is the same at most high end price points. It all depends on which games you play as each company's cards this gen have advantages in different games. Any decent non biased review site will tell you this.

The only oddity is the 580 which is in a class of its own (but you certainly have to pay for it). Cannot remember a time when neither ATI or NVidia could land a killing blow. And there is nothing between their high-end cards, hence why they can both claim fastest, because it all depends what game you are playing. Neither is fastest across the board.

My 5770 can run every single game at max settings on 1080p (1920x1080, 60hz, progressive scan) with 4x AA and 8X anisotrpic filtering, admittedly I have to push the fan speed up when I go on a game, but it does it none the less.
No, you can't.... I don't believe for a second you can run metro 2033, stalker or DA 2 at max settings and get anywhere decent frame rates. But maybe you are happy playing at 15-20 FPS.

Aww can i volunteer to be the judge? Like both AMD and nVIDIA give me their cards and i'll run tests and then after many envelopes full of additional 'help' money (i have to buy the games for something too you know, else it won't be a proper test) i will declare my verdict? Pretty please?

Sounds like it just a ego contest between the two companies, I bet they've both already developing even powerful cards as we speak. I mean very few people are actually going to buy these cards as it just is not worth it given the current standard of most pc games.

Better question- who is willing to pay £500 for some tech that only marginally performs better (in real terms) over it's apparently "outdated" predecessors?

Nvidia and AMD are getting nervous- graphics on the PC are plateauing, and people are moving over to consoles, depriving them of a big money milker. So they just treat every card as if it's revolutionary, despite no real person being able to notice or care about any difference.

PS: Who the fuck does SLI or that Crossfire thing, anyway? Why would you need 2 cards, unless your monitor was the size of a shed?
Hey,

SLI/XFire's a common choice amongst people with aging video cards (Your choice, get a full card-upgrade or buy another (depreciated) of your old card and get a nice boost in performance)

The 6990/GTX590 are pretty significant cards cause they're basically crossfires on one board, it gives insane performance compared to any single-gpu card as a result.

I wouldn't pay £500 for one, but people are happy dropping £1000 on a guitar that doesn't sound amazingly better than their current one.

I prefer to upgrade a £150 card when it stops playing most games on high, about once every 2 years.

Note that I'd buy a second 9800GT instead of upgrading to my 5850 if my motherboard actually supported SLI, since 9800GT's can be had second-hand for about £40 now

Competition is healthy and all, but I couldn't give a fiddlers which one of them has the current fastest graphics card at the moment. I'd never spend that kind of money on a single piece of hardware for a computer, it's beyond the scope of what I need my computer to do.

The one reason I've stuck with Nvidia throughout the years is because I've never (Me, personally, this person here) have had an issue or problem with their hardware or drivers. I have had problems with ATI cards in other machines.

"World's Fastest Graphics Card."
Not for long. I'll give it about 2 days before a better version comes out.
By my understanding, the reason that AMD is calling nVidia out is because it failed it's goals. Usually, they release one after the other so that the best card is the newest lineup from whatever company, E.g. AMD brings out new top-line card, it's fastest, nVidia brings out new top-line card, it's fastest etc etc.. but the nVidia card is actually the newest one, yet it's slower than the older AMD card, hence being called out on it.

What makes it worse is that it alos means that AMD is next to bring out a new line of cards, meaning that they've been top for a while. :)

(I think!)

Come on! Some good honest, face to face competition.

How sad is it that this is so refreshing?
As good as competition is this comes as childish to me.
Obviously, competition is something men enjoy so it's inherently childish.

fucking awesome.....

I use both nVidia and AMD, and I honestly don't see much of a difference between the two other than pricing...

but to have one call the other out to show if it is faster... that takes balls..... probably made from some sort of metal....
A metal that is possibly brass?

The answers you've seen cover about half the people who do it, and their reasons. The other half aren't sure why they need two cards either.

I have an AMD and have never had an issue with it. For my use ( HD video editing ) it seems to do everything I need it for exceptionally well.

Why the hell am I a fan of nVidia when AMD is cheaper? Perhaps a better question would be why does nVidia pretend like competition isn't a thing and keep their prices higher anyway? Seriously, I bought an older nVidia card for $140. I love the thing and it gets the job done, but I know things have gotten a lot more powerful since then. Then my brother gets one of the newer AMD cards for the same price and it's technically better in most categories. SAY WUUUUUUUUUT?

Follow up question: why will my next card probably be nVidia again? I guess it's because I know they work well with my computer, but still.

It's been far too long since we've had good, vicious competition in a lot of computer parts.

Haven't got them, but everything i've tried up to now the worst I get is 40 fps, it may be due to my processor aswell, got a AMD Phenom II X4 965 (quad core 3.4ghz) that may be taking over some of the work, tried Crysis(>40), Bad Company 2(>40), new Medal of Honour(=60). Not that fussed on DA2 anyway after trying the demo, but would like to try the others when I can.

It breaks my heart to say this, and I feel as if I am betraying nVidia, as they helped me through my tough times of playing The Sims 2, right up until this February, but they really do need to pick up their game.

I know that my new AMD graphics card is a far superior model to my old 9800GT, but not once have I had an error with crashing, or an update going wrong (which was from the very first with nVidia).

I...I'm sorry nVidia, but unless you can turn yourself around this time, I'm going to have to truly let you go and fully embrace the glory of AMD...
Now, now go! Before I cry anymore!
