So after the release of MW2 and the 'lol Russians attack' theme it seems a lot of games are jumping on the America at war band wagon. Although the US attacking other countries and such is nothing new at video games, it seems since MW2 everyone is trying to replicate the US in order to give a player a feeling of dismay of seeing their home attacked. Of course not many are striking home but it seems like it is seriously starting to be used.

So I ask you all, do you thing America being attacked is a cliche?

Ever since? If I'm not mistaken games have featured America being attacked before MW2

Resistance: Fall of man.
Resistance 2.
Turning point: Fall of Liberty.
Freedom Fighters.
Fallout.
A few command and conquer games.

I don't think it's really 'cliche'. I mean, there are only so many places you can fight a war on Earth.

Well, they haven't been invaded in 300 years, give or take.

Britian hasn't been invaded since 1066.

New kids on the block actually think people want to invade them.

I can't tell if this is a joke or not.
The last time the USA was invaded was in WWII when Japan invaded that small set of isles off the tip of Alsaska, though admittedly that wasn't terribly important, but it was NOT 300 years, since Britain invaded in 1812 and burned down the White House.

Well since the Russians, Germans, Chinese, North Koreans and every other non American besides the English, French and Canadians are evil to the largest extent, what do you expect? Of course they will twirl their evil mustaches and order their evil legion of goons to invade the US.

It's extra delicious on pancakes. Mmmm, Freedomcakes...

OT: Eh, it's not incredibly overused yet. Like someone said above, there are only so many locations on Earth in which to fight a war.

Eh... well... these games are developed in America or they're targeted to Americans. It's a cliche in so much as it's being overdone, but it's more pander than anything else.

Yes it's a cliche, but no it was most certianly not started by MW2 or any other game for that matter. Movies and books have been portraying a "homeland" attack scenario for decades (if not centuries). Gaming is just a more interactive way to tell the same story.

Wait.. what?!?! What about 1940? Id say that was pretty much an invasion considering the land masses taken enroute to Britain were occupied territories.

Edit: Sorry if I got tripped by Poes Law.

Yes. It is very cliche. There are multiple books and movies about the US being attacked routinely since WWII.

Uh... yeah. It is. But of course, it's usually coming from American devs so it kind of makes sense.

A cliche? It's a cliche that has its own eponymous decade. The post-9/11 era.

And before that was the era of the Cold War fantasy. And in-between was the Cold War nostalgia fantasy. And before all that was probably the Red Scare era, leading all the way back (in labor union form) to the European Empire era.

But don't quote me on that last sentence there.

A Hermit's Cave
American dev teams, American publishers, American target audience, American cast...

So, it is sort of a cliche, sort of pandering, but it's also the dev teams just playing it safe, because such a setting is almost bound to sell amongst the masses, and non-Americans aren't honestly going to complain that much. (I don't, I just want to shoot things...)

Looks like someone doesn't know their American history. Not that I blame you or anything, most Americans have no sense of history and don't know their own history either.

That's why I said 'give or take'.

Granted, that's no excuse for not knowing exact dates.
