So Germany bombing the shit out of London is what you would call a baby invasion? Please... Germany Invaded Britains Airspace to bomb the shit out of them during WWII, thats an invasion. You dont need troops on the ground rounding up civilians to invade a country.

Well, they haven't been invaded in 300 years, give or take.

Britian hasn't been invaded since 1066.

New kids on the block actually think people want to invade them.
Looks like someone doesn't know their American history. Not that I blame you or anything, most Americans have no sense of history and don't know their own history either.
That's why I said 'give or take'.

Granted, that's no excuse for not knowing exact dates.
300 years isn't even close. Mainland USA hasn't been invaded in almost exactly 200 years, but as one of the above posters said, some of the islands that the US owns were invaded during World War 2.
Give or take a few centuries.

See were I'm going with this?

A couple of centuries is a lot in American history. Not so much in Europe.
I hope that's what you'll try to say in your next history class.
It's a good job I'm not at school then :D

What I'm trying to get at, is that America is a young country, and because it's young, it's going through that phase, much like a child, where it thinks everybody is after their stuff.

Give it 500 more years and it will have probably grown out of it by then.
Marry me...

I mean, there are only so many places you can fight a war on Earth.
The total surface area of the Earth is about 500,000,000 square kilometers, so finding new places shouldn't be too hard.

OT: This is old stuff used to try and tug at the heart strings of people in the U.S. but generally fails on an international market.

Yes. As an American, I'm sick and tired of America being the target for every single fucking thing. I understand having some American traits from games made my American developers, but have variety, you guys. This is why everyone hates us.
We actually hate you for different reasons.

However, I won't start a flame war.

THEN WHAT THE HELL WAS THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN?!? Sure seemed like a goddamned invasion to me!
That was a battle for air superiority, at no point did a large number of Germans set foot on British soil.

Dude we've always been "getting attacked" in all kinds of media. And most of the destruction is focused on New York City. Which is funny in and of itself because that's where our biggest symbol of liberty is located. However, it's usually aliens or giant robots that seem to flex their muscles in the Big Apple. So yeah, I wouldn't call it a cliche more so that it's pop culture.

No, the cliche is when a bunch of non-Americans come in and start saying everything is focused on America.

Pro-tip: You don't want to see America in media? Don't watch/play American media.

Yes, it was an invasion... an unsuccessful invasion. The UK hasn't been invaded in almost a millenia, I don't care what country you are, that's impressive.

American being attacked is a cliche because Americans respond to attacks. Unlike half of Europe, they don't just put up with suicide bombers.

Battle of Britain was fighting with planes/bombers, pretty sure thats a battle (hence the name) rather than a invasion?

Seriously? For a start most of Europe has nothing to do with conflicts that involve suicide bombers. The countries that do are doing things, which rather ruins that point, why else is Britain involved in Afghanistan and Iraq etc?

Anyway back to topic - America bieng attacked is pretty cliche, but I don't think its becuase its America so much. America is seen as the most powerful country on the planet by most people (particuallary Americans) so its a threat thing. Having random ennamy 403 invading a weak country doesn't really do much, whilst invading a superpower shows a massive amount of strength.

...
What? How does bullying some farmers halfway across the world make it a cliche that your country gets attacked?

I think the whole thing it mainly to do with American arrogance [no, not all Americans are arrogant] but in their eyes they are the new superpower of the world, so the only way a game can conceivably be made about America and feel like it has a threatening enemy, is to create a scenario in which something as outlandish as America being invaded happens.

Then they can say "And this is how we shall win"

In a broad sense we were invaded by Scotland in 1603, the Dutch in 1688 and by Hanover in 1714.

It's not so much I'm annoyed by games and films and so forth when they portray America being invaded by human forces. For me it becomes annoying when the entire Earth is invaded by aliens, and the Americans stand up and say "Yes, we represent everyone on the planet because no one else is worth bothering with."

Which is, I think, why I really appreciated District 9, the original novel 'War of the Worlds' and will probably be thankful for Mass Effect & Modern Warfare 3.

(Obviously MW3 isn't about aliens {that we know of} but it's set at least partially on British soil, so.)

Any intrusion of foreign forces with hostile intent into a nation, wether it be by land, air, or sea, is counted as an invasion. If Germany had successfully pounded the British into oblivion, then just used the land for resources and production, would it only be considered an invasion when the factories came? No, the invasion started when the first German planes crossed the channel into British airspace.

And unsuccessful invasion is still an invasion nonetheless. Invasions don't have to be successful, all they have to do is debilitate and demoralize the enemy.
