Maybe I didn't pay much attention when learning about this...

I know they submitted an application to join the EU and I know the EU acknowledged it.

Maybe they're not out of talks yet.

The fact that American citizens I've met always feel so self-entitled, makes me immediately feel more comfortable around Europeans like myself. There are millions of completely normal, kind Americans, I know, but when I went to America I saw nothing but rude, arrogant bigots. And I'm from England, for God's sake!
I don't know.. the fact Europeans are still coming here claiming they are better kinda proves the opposite, doesn't it?
Do you mean coming onto this poll, or coming to America? If it was the latter you meant, that wouldn't make much sense. If they thought they were better than Americans, why on Earth would they subject themselves to constantly being surrounded by Americans? Could you expand a little?

The picture pretty much sums it up. Every country has its up and downsides. Also, i think Europe and America should be pictured together and be compared to China instead against each other, as this is unfortunately clearly the most powerful nation for at least another 100 years.

And now excuse me, gotta continue my study of mandarin, the language of our future overlords >.>

I have a reason for saying EU > USA.

EU is home to Scandinavia (Canada-is-America's-hat-translation: Norway, Sweden and Denmark) the countries with the most well functioning society models on the planet.

USA has also the highest annual murder rate in the world with about 11,000 deaths. In comparison, the 2nd highest annual murder rate is Germany, with 60 to 80. This alone is reason enough to never set foot in that hell hole.
Germany population: 82,110,097
America population: 307,006,550

Gee I wonder why there are more murders.
So you're saying 3.4 times larger population warrants 130 times more murders?

Actually, if you add up all of EU's countries, there are under 1000 murders. EU has twice the population of America, yet America still has over 10 times as many murders.

Your logic scares me, or your math. One of those anyway.
Actually south africa has the highest murder rate, the united states isn't close to number 1.
We are 24th I believe. And Britains violent crime statistics are worse than South Americas. Not murders, but violent crime.

I meant to the thread.
It wasn't even meant to be taken seriously, yet here they are claiming their superiority.

Don't forget to mention that slums in America are usually part of something bigger/normal, but slums in EU are entire countries.

I join these pissing contests when an American feels superior, mocks our accents, stereotypes etc.

I only start them when I hear somebody use the American version of a saying that makes no sense.

Why does everybody connect Europe with the fucking nazzies?! I mean THERE ARE OTHER COUNTRIES in Europe, besides Germany and Itally, you know... Europe has a ton more history than the U.S. so I think comparing them would be like comparing a poorly-endowed titmouse with an f-ing eagle... (the titmouse being the U.S. and the eagle being Europe, mind you, NOT the other way around...)

The government wants in. And joining the EU would greatly help us in our economic shit. But around 10-25% of the people here don't want Iceland to join the EU because of how uneducated about the situation they are.

I could write a long ass speech about this. But I have better things to do at the moment.

Now, the main difference is: Europe is not a country. Sure all the states of the USA are different, the people as much as the landscape, but it is still one large country. Cross the border between 2 two seemingly very identical countries (say Germany and the Netherlands) and after a short while you will see differences.
Go to Italy, just a bit to the south of Germany, and it is practically another world. Even more apparent when you move east.

As for a vs... both have their drawbacks and advantages, but the main thing that makes me happy as a european is that people like Rush Limbaugh are FAR less popular, even though there's worrying increase in right-wing politics in almost every country...

I worry for my Europe. We could have become a nice beacon in the world. We didn't, and what we are now is just another bunch of people with nicer living conditions than others in the world.

Oh, Scandinavians shouldn't be too proud of their sociological advances and benefits they enjoy at the moment.

1. It's going to end pretty soon, as no first-world country can afford that for much longer in the new global economy emerging right now, and

2. They could only afford it due to their low population. It's the same with Austria and Switzerland. All these countries often speak ill about the "big brothers" Germany and Frances economic, but always forget that these countries have to handle such problems on a much much larger scale.

Norway is not EU. But I do agree with you otherwise.

Well the EU does include Iceland, Italy and France (to name a few) and I'd argue they're just as beautiful as America.
Iceland is not EU. But again, good arguments.

Norway is also beautiful. So is Sweden. And Germany. And many other countries that belong to the EU.
This is my favourite. Because it corrects that Iceland is not part of EU, and still say that Norway is :p
Also, Iceland wants to join EU. They are practically begging EU to let the join since they have completely F*ed up their economy. EU are processing their application right now.

EDIT:

First off, scandinavia lasted the best through the economic crisis as far as I know and Norway has a buttload of oil. Investments in Sweden are skyrocketing right now. So I'd say they're pretty well off economically. Also maybe they're the ones that are finally realizing how it's supposed to be done. Having a small but happy population (studies show that the Scandinavian people are the most happy) is not a fault by them, but the opposite.

I think we are talking about EU as a short for Europa, because everyone here are lazy, and don't want to Write Europa every time...

Seems to be quite a lot of anti-American and anti-European sentiment here. Bias and confirmation bias and all that jazz. This thread should be locked if people can't discuss points and debate rationally rather than measuring dick sizes.

Somebody please close this thread, it really is just a pissing contest of cherrypicking amongst unfavorable statistics misenterpreted to appear representative of either region/country as a whole.

No, the USA as a whole is not a shithole because the crime rate in certain areas is high due to poor social politics and liberal gunlaws in certain areas.

No, EU isn't run by right wing lunatics and nazis just because these guys represent 10 % of the population in certain countries.

No, every person in the EU isn't a homosexual just because the laws concerning gay marriage are more liberal.

No, the words of Michael Moore and Gert Wilders should in no way be taken for good measure.

Grow up already, you have like 19 boards on 4chan for these discussions

Fuck yeah! We should be counted as our own part of the world, we have a democratic and a socialistic view, we have a higher IQ average than most countries, and the Scandinavian countries are always in within the annual top 10 best countries in the world list. I believe Norway have gotten the price for "best country to live in" for the last 20 years or more.
Maybe we can persuade Finland and Iceland to be a part of an union as well.
No more NATO or European Union bullshit either. Win win situation if you ask me.

As for a military power, we would have the Swedish-Norwegian made armoury, that is actually pretty impressive, the training of the Norwegian-Finnish soldiers (witch both are better trained than both the American and British soldiers) and other stuff i dont remember right now.

Edit: sorry, i got of topic, but im sick of seeing the Scandinavian governments just hopping along behind the American-British governments as a brain damaged dog with separation anxiety.
