Somebody please close this thread, it really is just a pissing contest of cherrypicking amongst unfavorable statistics misenterpreted to appear representative of either region/country as a whole.

No, the USA as a whole is not a shithole because the crime rate in certain areas is high due to poor social politics and liberal gunlaws in certain areas.

No, EU isn't run by right wing lunatics and nazis just because these guys represent 10 % of the population in certain countries.

No, every person in the EU isn't a homosexual just because the laws concerning gay marriage are more liberal.

No, the words of Michael Moore and Gert Wilders should in no way be taken for good measure.

Grow up already, you have like 19 boards on 4chan for these discussions

EU>US

Do you want to know why?

Proper beer.
Many areas have fantastic local breweries.
American beer is kinda... meh. Especially compared to proper English ales such as Old Speckled Hen or Spitfire.

And on another alcohol related note Scotch>Bourbon.

LOLZ

I also find it hard to make a point sometimes (mostly because it's the internet and people see you as text rather than a person typing at college between classes) and people take the exception as the rule (ore believe documentaries not about nature) or misuse statistics (which can be bent either way all the time).

So basically everyone has their own opinion about everything and their own reasons and will not likely be swayed by piss contests (which is what most things on the internet come down to because it's the internet...).

The fact that American citizens I've met always feel so self-entitled, makes me immediately feel more comfortable around Europeans like myself. There are millions of completely normal, kind Americans, I know, but when I went to America I saw nothing but rude, arrogant bigots. And I'm from England, for God's sake!
I don't know.. the fact Europeans are still coming here claiming they are better kinda proves the opposite, doesn't it?
Do you mean coming onto this poll, or coming to America? If it was the latter you meant, that wouldn't make much sense. If they thought they were better than Americans, why on Earth would they subject themselves to constantly being surrounded by Americans? Could you expand a little?
I meant to the thread.
It wasn't even meant to be taken seriously, yet here they are claiming their superiority.
Ah, that would make more sense. I assume you are American, yes? I do apologise to my brethren for making any attempt to overshadow American citizens such as yourself, but every country has it's bigots, and racists, and sexists, and murderers, and sadists, and egotists. Entire continents like North America and Europe are no exceptions.

I have a reason for saying EU > USA.

EU is home to Scandinavia (Canada-is-America's-hat-translation: Norway, Sweden and Denmark) the countries with the most well functioning society models on the planet.

USA has also the highest annual murder rate in the world with about 11,000 deaths. In comparison, the 2nd highest annual murder rate is Germany, with 60 to 80. This alone is reason enough to never set foot in that hell hole.
Where do you get your stats? I have a really hard time believing there's that big of a difference between the 2 highest, especially when certain countries like North Korea and China can't be relied upon for these kinds of stats. I'm American, and I love my country, but I'm willing to admit we suck at quite a lot of stuff.
OT: I've argued like that before, but I've also argued that geography has nothing to do with the people who stand out in history in many cases. It's fun either way, as long as you keep it lighthearted and remember it's people that matter, not where their mother happened to be when she gave birth to you.

Nope. The idiotic people here in Iceland don't want to join the EU. They're afraid that all our national business will go down the drain.

One thing you have to give America the advantage over is Natrual Wonders. America truely is a beautiful country, just don't screw it up.
Norway is also beautiful. So is Sweden. And Germany. And many other countries that belong to the EU.
Norway is not in the EU.

Also, Iceland wants to join EU. They are practically begging EU to let the join since they have completely F*ed up their economy. EU are processing their application right now.
NO WE AREN'T.

Most of the population doesn't want to join. Chunks of our own government doesn't even want to join. The government doesn't have any platforms to stand on if they don't do something right now and thus they are trying to act like they are doing shit by starting EU talks that they know will probably never actually happen.

Take my word for it that if the nation had to vote on if it should join the EU or not (and matters would be settled that way) it would vote no.

Also, if we had been in the EU at the time of the economic collapse we would be even more fucked now then we already are, so your claim makes very little sense.
I disagree: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accession_of_Iceland_to_the_European_Union
I'm thinking you'll be in by 2012.
And the only reason you want in is to get euros since your currency is practically worthless.
The latest polls show that a majority want to join EU.
I'm not trying to start a fight with you, I'm just trying to have an intelligent, factual conversation

Its funny I've lived in America for 19 years now and i have managed not to get all murdered and stuff.

OT: Really though, does ones country have any actual value to the person themselves? I can see that it has an effect on the development of a person, but its kind of like your parents, after a certain age you cannot blame your fucked up life on your country.

Edit: ohhh and George W. Bush =/= Hitler. I hate the man too guys but really, Hitler?

I join these pissing contests when an American feels superior, mocks our accents, stereotypes etc.

I only start them when I hear somebody use the American version of a saying that makes no sense.
For example, holding down the fort, as opposed to holding the fort? I agree; when I hear some sayings that make no sense, I feel rather angry. But Americans speak a bastardised form of English, so anger is inevitable, is it not?
And please respond saying you weren't serious about Americans mocking our accents. There is nothing more fucking annoying in the world than a heavy American accent!

I'll give you Scotch, best whiskey in the world. Am I correct in assuming your exposure to American beer is limited to varieties of Budweiser, Miller and Coors? If so, you have my condolences. I recommend coming over here and trying a good microbrew, or at least a Samuel Adams. If you ever get a chance, try a Flying Dog. Best American beer I've ever tried, and I make it a point to be very picky about my beer. From my experience imports tend to be the worst a given country has to offer; for example I can't stand Heineken or Shiner, but I'm sure their respective countries have great booze to offer.

Your image is a bit small OP, i can just about make it out, but a larger one would be better. Otherwise i agree with what you say, kind off.

Anyhow, posting some Europe V America images:

This one is wonderfully ironic:

you know that Hugh Laurie is British right? so that would be EU vs EU

I think we are talking about EU as a short for Europa, because everyone here are lazy, and don't want to Write Europa every time...
Europa is a magazine and the sixth moon of Jupiter.

Also, I think it's funny that this whole thread is Americans not knowing that "EU" stands for the European Union, which is not the same thing as Europe, and Europeans not understanding this misunderstanding.

As opposed to the namby-pambies who added extra letters to make their writing look more French?
Then again, we don't expect anyone who talks about an "American accent" to not have a voice grating to the ear.

BTW when did people think that this comparison between USA and Europa, meant USA vs The European Union (or EU for short)?

Yes, Norway and Iceland aren't in the European Union but they are a part of Europa.

On a slight side note, before the end of the school term before summer I was bored and played aorund with google, typing in "Why do " and laughing at the suggestions which I can all assume were done mostly by Americans no matter what the nationality. The most popular suggestion for "Why do british people" used to be "Why do British people have accents?".
