I sure probably make one thing clear, anyway. I know that emotion is hard to convey across the internet. I'm not frothing at the mouth or wailing in despair; the emotion is closer to disappointment. I like Death Note and I'd like it to be shown in the best possible light.ILPPendant said:Snipped for brevity.
If they are going to do this movie and make all these changes, I'd at least like a subtitle to separate this story about a Deathnote from the Deathnote story. This would liberate the script from it's dependence on the original story as source. Luke can be himself without having to be Kira/Light. "A Death Note in New York" or what have you. I'm all for new and different stories with new and different characters in this setting.
As for reputation, I'll admit it's true that hardly anyone actually abandons a franchise due to a bad movie; just look at Dungeons and Dragons. But it's also true that it's harder to attract positive interest when your headline attraction is an albatross around your neck. How many people would start watching Avatar after seeing The Last Airbender? It also means the chances of getting a good movie, a movie the fans would like and be proud of is effectively nil. Think of all those Eragon fans out there that will never get their story finished on the silver screen because Hollywood destroyed their one and only chance.
To go back to my first point, why adapt at all? Why not just make an entirely new story in America free of ties to the original? I don't have a problem with Luke, I have a problem with using him as a replacement for an established character.
