Unfortunately the only Americans I've ever seen were either on the news, talking about the latest tragedy, or making an ass of themselves on the internet, so my judgement probably isn't very... good.

Everyone here in my town is a fat fucking moron.
So does that include you? And if it doesn't, why do you still live there?

Why wouldn't they? If they think you're from America then they'll assume that you know where North Dakota or Phoenix is. I'm sure I'm guilty of saying I'm from Colorado to foreigners.
Ah but why must you all assume we are American? It's quite insulting actually, as if America is the only country that matters and that everyone in the world MUST know every single state and territory.

When people ask me where I'm from I don't say Victoria (because that would be rude and presumptuous of me considering the majority of people wouldn't understand what I'm talking about), I say Australia. It's called logic, use it.
I hate defending my country, but I think I'll have to. It's not that America matters more, it's just that it's such a large country. On some online games they show where people are, Halo 3 has a map. Look at where the people are. There are two major areas, America and Europe. As a whole, Europe beats America, but as individual countries they just can't match up.

So maybe 30%-40% of the people are American. This isn't for all games (players on Lost Planet were mostly Japanese last time I was on), but for the really popular ones it works. Due to the programs that match people up on online games Americans get matched up mostly with Americans. What's wrong with them assuming they'll be matched up with an American?

I know this is getting long, but bear with me. It's about relevance as well. I think people in other counties should know New York City and other major cities. Just as I know Moscow, St. Petersburg, London, Tokyo, Paris, Mexico City etc... Globally these cities are relevant. So if you know you'll be playing or talking with people from all over the world then, yes, Americans should stick with saying they're from America or a large relevant city as I do on the escapist. However if Americans think they'll be playing with a largely American/Canadian crowd smaller cities and states are relevant and I believe they should be able to say a state or smaller city like Denver or Florida. I know Canadian territories and provinces and some cities so for the most part Canadians are in the same boat as Americans. However, some Americans are too dumb so it might not work well, but I do believe Canadians should be able to say their territory or province anyways.

So if I'm on a thread not talking about America and I say I'm from Colorado then I agree that it's inappropriate, but if I'm playing online with a group that's mostly American then I think it would be appropriate. The more people from your area you're around the more specific you can be in my opinion. I live in a small town so I can't really say I'm from that city unless I'm talking to someone from the valley or at least a Coloradan.

Well that was really long, sorry.

Edit: I just looked up your state(?). It really wouldn't be fair to people to say your state name. It's roughly the same population as Colorado(cool!) and it also has a fairly common name. Victoria is also the capital of British Columbia, Canada as well as other things. So you can't really be surprise if people don't know what it is. Just saying.

A stereotype is there for a reason, so in some cases it can be true, but not in others. America is technically the fattest nation on Earth, but "Stupid, fat, impolite" is taking it a bit far.

There are "Stupid, fat, impolite" people in every country on Earth.

Two possibilities:

As a matter of heuristics, those who make themselves the most visible, are often attention seeking wankers. Therein, most stereotypes are built on visibility.

As a matter of stereotype building, the eye of the observer may be painted by what they see in themselves.

EDIT:

Third possibility: We are a nation of stupid, fat, and impolite wankers.

*most stupid

OT: But seriously man - America's a pretty big place. Each state has completely different customs and cultures and then many more within them. You can't really just say "all of x are x in x" because a hell of a lot of times it won't be applicable.

Stereotypes are stereotypes.
There's no way you can change them, unless you're Robo-Jesus or something.

Well, no matter where you go not everyone will conform to a stereotype, because it's a stereotype. I live in America, and my town is populated by considerate people... for the most part.

well, stereotypes are based on smth, but they're not always correct, I myself used to hate the French, so I went to Paris, and hated them even more, they were impolite, rude to outsiders and extremely pretencious, but then I met a guy from Lyon(3rd most populated area in France) and he was actually a really cool guy, so I guess it all depends on your luck

I love how everyone is saying that the North and West are the epitome of perfection in the United States and then go and say that southerners are impolite, obese, uneducated rednecks.

Please. You can find the stereotype no matter where you go.

maybe you're just living in the wrong town? :D

OT: I think it's partially that the stereotypes are false, or a bit incorrect, and the fact that you went to LA. Seriously, the stereotypes I know of differs from area to area. In some parts everyone's stupid (the typical southern stereotype for example) and in some a lot of people are really fat. In some areas people don't differ that much from us in Europe. Hell, from what I've heard, Americans stereotypes other Americans. It's a large place after all.

Just California is roughly the size of Sweden, and here we have lots of stereotypes about other Swedes. (damn all skåningar... and stockholmare. And boråsare... They're not worthy of being Swedes! (at least we in Göteborg sometimes joke about them not being worth it... =P))

Go on omegle, ask their a/s/l, then ask them: "What happens if your drop a pen on the moon?"

That's a good way of judging people's intelligence, and trust me, your faith in humanity will be lost forever.

Yes, yes we do. I have to ask though, why would you move from London to Georgia? I can't stand Tennessee let alone Georgia. So what is that about?

So I just got back from a vacation in LA and I don't understand some of the stereotypes centred around Americans. I imagine most of us have heard these stereotypes, and I myself have been guilty of making them from time to time. But in the week I was there, I didn't see an abnormally high number of fat people. I didn't think anyone I talked to was stupid. Everyone seemed polite and there were few people who were especially inconsiderate. I didn't notice a higher number of any of those types of people in the US than anywhere else.

So are these stereotypes just untrue? Because I've known people who would swear that they are, and insist that every stereotype is accurate. Did I just have an unusually pleasant experience in the States or is are people in California just a breed apart from their countrymen? Please Escapists, enlighten me.
well its more or less which part of the country you are in..the united states almost has completely different cultures depending on where you are at. in my spot (the midwest) we have few fat people, usually 1/10~1/15 people, but depending on where your at you can hit ignorant crime rate central or wonderfully nice and respectful town.

you probably just got kind of lucky, but not saying those stereotypes are 100% true either, we do have a bigass country, so lots of things apply all over, depending on where you are at.

We have those American Stereotypes here in the US. Except that here, there Southern stereotypes.

And naturally, like any stereotype, the prevalence there of stereotypes will be much lower then everyone else lets on. And overall, people EVERYWHERE are just people. Good hearted if slightly selfish, a bit daft at times, with a mix of a variety of intelligence, with alternating interest in others, and desire to keep to oneself.

By definition, a Stereotype exists to save time. It creates an associated image of the average representative sample. Average Americans really enjoy Malls. Spend an afternoon on the sidelines at a mall, observing all ages and walks of life. The stereotype begins to fit pretty quick...

Then again, I am a dirty unwashed ex-Commie foreigner... Maybe there's something to that.

You could find people of that description in every country on the planet.

The only one I'm curious about is the rudeness one, because that truly does not fit as an American stereotype. The south, for all its faults, is still an incredibly polite and hospitable place as long as you don't bring up politics or religion. The Midwest and West also tend to be very friendly, especially the cities like Portland and Seattle. Even New York City is rated as the most polite major city in the world. http://www.rd.com/living-healthy/good-manners/article27599-2.html

Anyways, say what you will about America, 13 bucks still gets you a hell of a lot of mice.
