why should someone not ask if a stereotype is true or not? its possible someone just wants to know how the world works, regardless of age or intention.

also, on average, if you look at statistics. Americans ARE fat.
yet, they are NOT impolite ( and actualy really friendly people, way to go USA! )
also, yes, yes they are stupid, and uneducated, if you compare it to the rest of the western world, by education. but 'stupid stupid' no. they are crafty, can think stuff up to get them along fine etc. the problem is in that you have either very smart, of very uneducated people.

All stereotypes have some truth to them, but you can't generalise a race of people until you've met different members of said race from all different parts of their own country - and indeed from across the world. Even then, everybody's different, so I doubt most stereotypes hold up. On the other hand, you went to one city, you didn't meet EVERYONE IN THE USA.

I don't see the stereotype myself, everyone says they want to rule the world and are fat and lazy and think only know the world via TV/movies. yet this is where many people see Americans, never met one personally but assume they are like they are in the media.

Such is Australian stereotypes, no we don't all wear akubras, ride kangaroo's or drink fosters.. and no, we do not "put another shrimp on the barbie" we call them prawns. And we don't all sound like crocodile Dundee or Steve Irwin, you can blame that accent on Hollywood.

You went to Los Angeles, which has a sizeable proportion of shallow, appearance-obsessed fools who are made out of plastic.

Come to Reno. Fat fucks and meth heads as far as the eye can see. I hate this town.

The South has the stupid and fat part covered and most of the big cities have the impolite part covered. I'm just joking (mostly). America is a big country that has a lot of regions and cities, each with their own flavor. I actually live in a valley where, in the span of only 60 miles, you can go from hick towns to mini-urban city to hippie town to rich town to ski town. I think those stereotypes work for America in general, but it doesn't describe Americans individually.

I currently live in a city that's over 30% Hispanic, has a lot of neo-hippies, loves the arts and where I haven't seen an obese person for the entire time I've lived here (I've seen a few in the cities around where I live, but not in my city yet). Is this representative of America in general? Hell no! America is a very large and diverse country and you can't apply a general stereotype to all of our regions.

P.S. You found polite people in L.A.? How did you manage that? Must have been in either a nice or touristy part of town.

Impolite? That is simply not true. I rate Americans as one one of the best nationalities to play online with. I have played on both European and American servers, and the American were by far the best.

Well when I was in L.A I barely even saw any Americans :S They were all Asain folk! But I have travelled across the southern states and the closer it gets to Texas the more the stereotype comes to life... Although I did meet some very nice people! So its not eveyone, believe me!

I went up the East Coast on holiday a week ago, and everyone is really polite. Maybe I was lucky, but strangers would offer help on the Metro and were generally considerate.

A recent study showed that a considerable part of the american population thinks that Beethoven is a dog.
However I've never been in America to confirm this. But the portray of americans on TV here shows them as lazy-garbage-food-eating-fat-ultra-conservative-religious-dumb-assholes.

I've never had problems with americans on online games though, despite the fact that they always answer the question "Where are you from" with the name of the state or city where they live on.

But the English are a little arrogant and selfish, personal experience.

I'm not sure if that one's true. Beethoven is an outdated movie I think people would have forgotten it by now. Plus you can't be sure about how accurate or unbiased the study was. People might know who Beethoven really is, but maybe they just say the dog because they think it's more relevant. Plus as I said before it's also influenced by region.

Why wouldn't they? If they think you're from America then they'll assume that you know where North Dakota or Phoenix is. I'm sure I'm guilty of saying I'm from Colorado to foreigners.

Well it's not entirely true but America is at least one country that lives up to it's stereotype. It's not like you see vodka drinking russians all over Moscow or coffee drinking turks with like 10 wives hanging out i a coffee shop in Istanbul...mosly lol jk

Well people world wide are fat, and Frnce is a very impolite place ya know. And we aren't the stupidest we have the what 2nd highest educational system?
I refer you to all of these links:

I will also point out that decrying a stereotype based on your own countrymen but then spouting your own stereotypes about others doesn't necessarily help your case.

But yes, people the world over are fat, stupid, dumb, ignorant, ugly, religiously pious, fanatical, and just plain evil. There is no one country or race where these things do not happen.

Ah but why must you all assume we are American? It's quite insulting actually, as if America is the only country that matters and that everyone in the world MUST know every single state and territory.

When people ask me where I'm from I don't say Victoria (because that would be rude and presumptuous of me considering the majority of people wouldn't understand what I'm talking about), I say Australia. It's called logic, use it.

Both of you are wrong.
1) It depends on the game.
2) It depends on the individuals you are playing with.
It doesn't depend on the country.
"That is simply not true"... well you can only say that from your perspective because they are basing it on their own personal experience just like you are. If I were to judge Americans based on my personal experience then I too would have bad things to say in terms of online gaming. However, I don't because that would be naive.

well a couple things first off yes you will get some people who are polite but the fat isn't helped that in England if you're fat they may give you a gym membership which is a good idea but in America the can prescribe mobility scooters that's where it came from. (I think)
second I've met a lot of Americans and personally whether it's just me or what they all are impolite but the kids mainly, especially on on-line games like cod or halo where you get 10 year old's who just found a mike. but all in all some (majority of over 12's are polite and some are fat so we could say the same about England as well so its kinda invalid.

You must've been in Beverly Hills or something. I live in LA and at least half the people i meet are either fat or completely stubborn/stupid.
yeah there though I agree you have to be blind or something not too see them there well they would mostly be in casinos or bars so that may explain it.

I'm sorry if this post offend's anyone but it's just my point of veiw.
