So are these stereotypes just untrue? Because I've known people who would swear that they are, and insist that every stereotype is accurate. Did I just have an unusually pleasant experience in the States or is are people in California just a breed apart from their countrymen?
The thing about most stereotypes, especially about Americans, are completely idiotic, and stem from a worse xenophobia than the one that we're often accused of. Ironic, isn't it?

When it comes right down to it, there are fat stupid people in all places, so saying that one nation is full of them is a little silly.

Also, glad to hear your stay in the states was pleasant.

You must have fantastic luck, my friend.

Everyone here in my town is a fat fucking moron.
That, or you just have terrible luck. Or you live in Texas, do the people around you conceal pistols by chance?
Tennessee actually, so you're not far off.
Tennessee? Really? I don't know why, but I always thought you lived...somewhere else. Also, I noticed you said you're not American earlier. What's your nationality, if you don't mind me asking.

Even you? *Sheds tear at thought*

And was it opposite day? Because if so they may of all transformed! Otherwise I don't know some stereotypes are true, others not so much! Just look in the right place and you'll find some.

Yeah, I'm not a typical Tennessee...ian. Whatever the hell these hicks call themselves ^-^

Anyway, no I don't mind at all. I was born in Bristol, England yet my parents moved to America when I was 3, so I dont' really remember it. I get a small English accent from my parents though, so I don't sound like I'm from here, fortunately.

Out of curiosity, where did you think I was from?

When i went to New York last month, most people were really nice, and i didnt really expect to see many fatties wondering the boiling streets of Manhattan...
And a lot of people we spoke to DID seem quite uneducated...and there were DEFINITELY some horrendously impolite people...

Thing is though, is this not the case in every country in the world? [not literally speaking obv but you know what i mean]. The stereotype could fit anyone. Except Finland. xD.

NOTE, Im English btw.

And most of them are running the country...
aaah the con-dems.

actually i think we a rather polite. i was raised in south-east london, then moved to newcastle. people here are very loyal to themselves, and are thoughtful towards anyone that, say, falls over in the street. until they discover youre from out of town. then the "go home"s start. but that might just be me

but overall, i think we're (UK) quite good for obesity and education, at least in some areas. as for politeness, well thats to do with who/where you grow up with, so its hard to judge by area. however, news has a lot to do with it. once you grow old enough to understand the news, its a short while before you grow cynical enough to distrust it all. in that period, you may choose a network that you will trust with your life. for me, its the beeby-see (BBC). if you watch american news channels, they are mainly focussed on glamour and flashy angles. but that might be because their viewers arent interested in anything else, so they have to to keep them interested. cause and effect really

Well I'm from Ireland and one time an American tourist asked my friend how long it took to drive to London when said tourist was in Dublin talking to my friend. After explaining that he couldn't and that England and Ireland were two seperate land masses he then had to explain that Ireland and Northern Ireland were the one land mass and Northern Ireland is just a little Political State still affiliated with Britain.

my dad once went to work in some part of america (sorry for the generalisation, i cant remember where it was) with some christian youth. when the discussion changed to politics in the british isles, the IRA and the problems with north and south ireland were inevitable. one of the girls in the group had a solution, as everyone inevitably does.

It's the same as saying "All Muslims are Terrorists." A stereotype is a stereotype regardless of demographic.

Hey, I'm sure there are some nice people there...somewhere. They're probably hiding, though. On second thought, I probably shouldn't speculate. The only people I know who live there are you, and some family on my mom's side. They're not American, either.

I don't know why, but I always thought you lived in the northern part of the country.

I'm an American citizen, but since I've grown up overseas, I look at Americans with a detached eye, and while some Americans can be rude, Americans are the only people I've know to start talking to random strangers on a bus, train, or elevator. Just about every other country I've been in has just sat there silently the whole time, when they're not too busy smelling each others body odor.

And you were in LA, try going to the midwest sometime. Completely FULL of heavy people.

I was always wondering about how those rankings are made. I mean, a friend of mine moved to the US in the middle of the High School (I'm from Poland). She finished her education in some High School in Houston. While I like her very much, she.. Isn't very clever. I even helped her with some of the English homework stuff via Internet, because she wasn't really good with the language. I thought she'll fail hard there, and yet, even though I didn't believe it a first (she scanned and sent me a copy of exam results for each class), she managed to get top scores, and was one of the best students in the school. So there goes the question: Is the US educational system not that good as they say, or it's so good it managed to make a below-par student a genius? Judging from what I've seen and heard when she got back to Poland during vacations, I'm guessing the former.

The text above is not an attack against people from U.S. or their educational system, nor it is proof that 'We are better', but this particular example always gives me the benefit of doubt when someone tells me about those rankings.

I don't think it is entirely their fault in this regard I think it is something that is just not taught well in schools or at all yet they like to seem to talk about it. It would be like me talking about cars and I know fuck all about them. Although I find the Geographical lack of knowledge a bit disturbing.

There is no way a Canadian would even pretend to be American...
True That, we get national pride by saying we're not Americans. We seem to get treated better internationally too once we make such a statement too... >.>

My friend moved out to LA and was appalled at the obesity rate and lack of a decent grocery store for miles.
When I went to LA for Disneyland I noticed that there seemed to be a lack of grocery stores in general, but then again, I didn't really go into the non-touristy areas much, so my testimony may not count for much. :/ However I did notice fast food was a lot cheaper (especially with free refills on pop), so that may help explain a higher obesity rate.

Although I had to find it funny when my family and I were told that the nearest grocery store to the hotel was "a drive away", when it was only about 7 blocks (or its rough equivalent). We walked there and back without trouble.

OT: The stereotype that Americans are fat, stupid, and rude would be largely false. Now if you change the and to an or, you may end up with a slightly above average result, but nothing too drastic. Now if we added idiocy on the internet however...

US is basicly the biggest western country with tons of junkfood chains some of which i havent even seen or heard of all of it being quite cheap, more cheap than healthy food anyhow. I believe its obvious that its gonna have. 1. The most fat people. 2. Rich impolite people (Not loads, just the guys sitting in the media and on the oil)

Guess impolite and stupidness amongst the middleclass comes from bad schooling.

A large ammount of easily optainable guns. ( GET OFF MAH LAWN )

And a more or less poor state.(Not african poor but a lot of the Americans dont have a lot of dollars to their name after the expensive bills. Worse for those that have a dept from their college)

Oh yea and the fact that they have a media hanging over their head like the sword of damocles.
(They are a bit like the religious people saying the world is going down. Just have more ad's)

Also, at the chance of being disliked. I personally think its funny reading about their courtsystem ;)

But i guess all theese kind of people are in almost every part of the world, Europe just learned to hide it like 200 years ago <_<

When I went to America last year I met loads of really nice people. We stayed in Florida and for the most part, people were very nice and welcoming - most of them wanted to hear me say stuff because of my British accent. There were a few who let the side down and made us think "Wow, sterotype" but as people have said there are fat, loud, obnoxious people all over the world, it just seems that America gets the biggest stick for it. I'd love to go Calfornia though! :D
