LA.. Man.. the 4 hours I spent there while going to Canada were the worst I've ever been through in a foreign country, not that they are fat and stupid, they were just very rude. You expect customer service at a place like McDonald's? Apparently not.. Though most other places in the states do have nice people, though I dislike LA (a lot..)...

I think you'll find that if you do some research into where all the fat people are they are for the most part located in the South. As well as the stupid and rude people are concentrated in the South. So as long as you stay out of the South you should be all good.

The ones the stereotype revolves around are just the very loud portion of the population.

Look at Canadians. Not all of us guzzle beer as if our lives depended on it, not all of us enjoy hockey, and not all of us are overly polite. Heck, some of us are just as bad as the American stereotype if the letters that sometimes get written to my city's newspaper is any indication.

I haven't the foggiest. All I know is that her statement that we "need more maps" has been a hallmark of American stupidity since she said it.

Stereotypes. They don't make sense. I don't live in an igloo, pray to the mighty beaver gods or own a zamboni.

Take any description of the people who live in your country from foreigners with a grain of salt.

Pick a random place in the country and start quizzing people on current world politics, big events in world history, or even American history and you'll likely get a blank stare for a few seconds before they try to laugh it off. It's really very depressing.
To be fair, if you aren't doing it yourself and you're just watching something put together like the following*, there's a chance that they cut out a lot of people who got the questions right. It wouldn't be entertaining or funny if they left those people in, so just edit it so it's all people giving wrong answers.

Well... I hope that's what happened anyway. I don't doubt that there are plenty of stupid people, but there must have been some smart ones too...

*Well okay, CNNNN is obviously put together for the lulz, but you know what I mean.

This again is another stereotype. There are fat stupid people all over the country, there aren't very many of them but unfortunately they are extremely loud and whiny which is why everyone associates fat, stupid people with America.

For whatever reason it seems like people tend to listen to the vocal insane minority instead of listening to the less vocal and more reasonable moderate majority in pretty much any society.

Most of America is normal, average people.

As is the rest of the world.

As a whole, the human race is rather boring.

As much as I'd like to believe you, I did it myself in San Francisco with some friends and a camera a few years back just to see what would happen. We wound up with something like 65% of the questions answered were at least mostly wrong (ie, the inventor of the lightbulb was Thomas Jefferson, etc), with as many as 20% unable to answer a single one of the 10 questions (from memory: First US government, inventor of the lightbulb, commanding officer of the Confederate forces at the end of the US Civil War, locate Iraq and Afghanistan on a blank map, the PM of the UK, the current Secretary of State, and I can't remember the rest, though they were all along simmilar lines). It was really very depressing. I wasn't expecting a 100% result from anyone, but the average wound up in the 40% area.

So I just got back from a vacation in LA and I don't understand some of the stereotypes centred around Americans.
See, you were in LA. LA is a pretty fit town, considering all the materialistic craziness that goes on there. I lived there for a while and well, these fit people can often (at the risk of stereotyping) be narcissistic self-entitled jerks.

I mean, the US has a terrible problem with weight because of our terrible food industry and infrastructure based on cars, speed and business. It's easy to get fat in a place where fatty foods are all around us for cheap. Especially when people have it ingrained in them that it's normal.

As far as politeness goes, you're Canadian, not Mexican or Middle Eastern and sadly, some people there will tend to be more polite to you because of that. I'm assuming you're a Caucasian male, anyway. I mean, people will be polite on the surface most anywhere you go, but every place has its particular intolerances.

Basically, if you knew the stereotypical LA resident, I imagine you would have picked up on it. California is known more for stoners and Hollywood bodies rather than obese people and bible thumpers. That's more what we call the "Bible belt" across the mid-west and such.

I'm sure this has been mentioned but the South is where you will find most of this. Although I don't know if they are particularly impolite, just very ignorant of any views other than their own. Me being an atheist would probably be shot if I went to a Texas bar and told someone what I am.

When I went to New York, I definitely noticed more fat people. As to rude and stupid, I didn't really talk to enough people, except the friends we were there to see, so I couldn't say, but no one seemed any ruder than back home.
