It's a stereotype that is made true by the uncountable hordes of soccer moms, computer illiterates and Republicans.

This just in: some people are fat, stupid and impolite. People live in America.

Can we be done with this please.
Thank you, you brilliant Man. I serioulsy am getting sick with this, and the fact that people have to analyze it and every time somebodys surpise that the sterotypes are for the most part untrue.

Plus, those stereotypes that other people think of Americans are usually those boisterous Texans and trailer trash. It's no wonder you did not see anybody of that kind in LA.
I take offense to that. 20+ years in this state and I have NEVER encountered the Texan stereotype people seem inclined to believe.

Most stereotypes are like this, but for the american one, I think it's actually very far into the minority. We have fat people, stupid people, and rude people, but a very, VERY small population of all three of those types, and really as a whole I never notice anyone particularly fat. Stupid is much more prevision. The media says it, so countries believe it, even our own. I've lived in America my whole life, have lived in four states, and can say I've only ever personally known two obese individuals (my great-grandfather (who was really just big all over the place, tall and wide), and a girl in our school). I've known a shit-ton of stupid people, but that's easier to hide. And rude people... I actually believe that one might be true, but that might just come from living in a small town where yelling is normal and manners aren't instilled on people from a young age.

Can't we start judging people on their character and not their nationality.
I am OK with people saying "Well from my time so so type of people are more likely to act xyz" but can we really try avoid doing that?

Wow I love all the hate on America.
I don't really care about what the world thinks about my country and the people who actully think that most of america is fat and stupid are probably people who have never visited 'merica and really shouldn't be passing judgment.

Pick a state that's a bit more mid-western, and I defy you to find any place where there aren't a greater ration of morbidly obese people.

It all depends on where you go. Some parts of the states are more attractive to self-centered buffoons who can't see past their desires at that very moment; and some places are filled with the sorts of people that Bing Crosby liked to sing about. Sometimes you get lucky, and sometimes you get Orlando, Florida.

Take a vacation in a city like Detroit, and you might see some more fat and stupid people, at least 1 murder week=stupid people. Impolite? No, that is only on the internet, or when you piss someone off.

I knew most of the answers to that video, a few I didn't but jeez...

I'm not sure if that fat stereotype is true, because honestly something like 90% of people I see are skinny/fit, or at most mildly overweight, but I can tell you for a fact that the stupid stereotype fits for most Americans. Pick a random place in the country and start quizzing people on current world politics, big events in world history, or even American history and you'll likely get a blank stare for a few seconds before they try to laugh it off. It's really very depressing. The vast majority of people I've met here are on roughly the same intellectual level as:

So in your opinion Americans don't know a lot of trivia on history? That isn't stupid at all in my opinion, just ignorant. God damn, where do you live where mostly useless trivia means being smart?

Those people are kinda creepy.
"I fucking hate america!
"Uhh why?"
"Because they are stupid"
"Wait...what?"
I then walk away slowly.

There are the stupid fat and rude Americans, I get to see them at work since I'm an American in retail, but there are plenty of people who don't fit the quota. Being in LA might ahve had something to do with it, since if you go to an area that isn't as popular with the "cool people" then there are larger people, but for every jackass out there here in the US there are 5 people who are polite, even if it's just a simple "bless you" when you sneeze or a nod of the head as a gesture when you walk by them.

The reason people cling to that stereotype is because it's the fat stupid jerks who are on the news, where the slimmer, nicer and more intelligent people are smart enough not to make their country look retarded

You can't hold the rest of America accountable for the actions of the Southerners.

I've been to the States (not very much, though), and whenever I've visited, most people seemed to be fairly polite - they don't seem to be any different than Canadians. Also, I didn't really notice a huge number of obese people.

So I just got back from a vacation in LA and I don't understand some of the stereotypes centred around Americans. I imagine most of us have heard these stereotypes, and I myself have been guilty of making them from time to time. But in the week I was there, I didn't see an abnormally high number of fat people. I didn't think anyone I talked to was stupid. Everyone seemed polite and there were few people who were especially inconsiderate. I didn't notice a higher number of any of those types of people in the US than anywhere else.

So are these stereotypes just untrue? Because I've known people who would swear that they are, and insist that every stereotype is accurate. Did I just have an unusually pleasant experience in the States or is are people in California just a breed apart from their countrymen? Please Escapists, enlighten me.
No, most Americans are decent enough. But there are a small amount of my countrymen who are very bad. And sadly these are the ones most other people talk about.

Does the LA in your post stand for Los Angeles? That place is the shithole of California culture, even when compared to valley towns (some of which seceded from the Union during the Civil War!).

Whatever. I've met some pretty fat, stupid and rude people here in Vancouver.

Work in retail anywhere on the globe. You'll see that every nationality has a lot of Darwin Awards waiting to happen.
