Hey now, I happen to belive in God, but I'm no extemist. I don't burn crosses in front of colored peoples yards or picket about how "Fags" ruin the whatever. I'm not a fan of homosexuality and therefore am not one. Simple enough.

Ok, rant time!

First of all there are not enough words to describe how enraged I feel at this group of morons. They are so hateful and completely deluded that I feel no sympathy for them. Absolutely none. I don't care what happens to the members of this "church", i would offer then no condolences.

Second, they are clearly twisting the words of the Bible to suit their agenda. Now I've not read the Bible, but I'm pretty sure that at no point did it say that adultery included being gay. "Thou shalt not commit adultery" means that. Don't cheat is all that the phrase means. Nowhere does it say that people should be gay.

Third, if I was attending a funeral where they were protesting, I would go and beat the shit out of them. Fuck any kind of laws, if I had lost a friend or family member, there is no way I would let anyone say that they were killed because gay people are allowed to live freely without prosecution. This is an unfortunate perversion of free speech, that I just hate.

Ugh. These people just make me sick. They are the complete opposite of the good of God that they are preaching.

He should do more of this, and not his wishy washy strawman arguments he usually employs. Thing is, the Phelps are fucking walking strawmen, they're clear cut villains completely in the wrong, and his style of badgering them and embarassing them further is completely the right thing to do in this case!

At the risk of going all "Godwin's Law", if one reads the Bible and all one gets out of it- what one thinks is the single most important concept in the thing, the one that should engage every fiber of one's being and ounce of one's waking energy- is that homosexuals should be persecuted... Mein Kampf would probably be much more to that person's liking. A lot less about compassion and peace and "the least shall be first" and "Vengeance is mine, says the Lord" (e.g., not yours...) and "before you would take the splinter out of your neighbor's eye, take the log out of your own" and all of that, much more straight-up "let's kill everyone who dilutes our entirely mythical purity".

I'm glad for freedom of speech. In a way, I'm glad that nutjobs like Phelps have the freedom to exist. That said, I'd be all for every legal means of making sure he and his clan know that their attitudes are anathema to every reasonable person to the point that they can't leave private property without feeling afraid. It's as much as they deserve.

The Phelpses are merely indicative of one of humanity's greatest failings: our implicit xenophobia, our hatred of that which we consider to be different from ourselves. There are many, many, many people, including myself, who manage to buck this trend, but throughout history, people have found ways to label some group of people as less than human and persecute them. Previous victims of such labeling include pretty much everybody who is not a white Christian. I say this being a white, heterosexual Christian myself, but one who thinks that I am not necessarily better than anyone else for those reasons alone.

I've occasionally wondered if these guys are just really, really committed anti-Christians, because they're doing a fantastic job of advertising the baser nature of religion. It almost seems more plausible than the apparent fact that some people actually believe some of the madness they've come up with.
