Apparently, classic .45 ACP pistol ammunition is especially scarce - a fairly good indication that it is in fact conservative Middle America rather than, say, inner-city criminals buying up all the ammo*.
Why?
That part got cut off, but following the link gets you
Bootnote

*Most kinds of .45 have unexceptional muzzle energy and are big and fat, giving fairly poor performance even against light, flexible body armour. It was the standard US military pistol round for a long time and many diehards still swear by it, but people who carry guns for a living - cops, soldiers, criminals - are mostly using other calibres these days. (Some spec-ops troops still use .45, as the bullet is subsonic and thus can be effectively silenced.)
Which still doesn't strike me as much of a rationale for that assumption. All it is a little more detail on the .45 round.
I guess inner-city types are looking something that gives better performance against the kind of light body armor cops wear.
Or because they just want a pistol, and could care less as long as it shoots things really fast out of one end and is cheap.

(doesn't really work but thought I might as well give it a go) :)

but honestly what the fuck its just ammo do you honestly really need 50 bullets? who is going to rob your house with an army of 50 men?
There's more than 50 animals to hunt, more than 50 paper targets to shoot, etc.
When I go shooting on a range, I go there with about 200 or so cartridges of each calibre. That's about 800 rounds of ammunition. Practising takes a lot of effort and is heavy on the wallet. Okay, I am a semi-professional recreational sport shooter, so I have to practise a lot. But having a few thousand rounds of ammo isn't that uncommon, if you're a sport shooter. And I'm not even an American.

No bullets!? Damn! Some people must be ammo-hording...and with those zombies coming....I need to find a broom or an axe or something.

On Topic: Well, My walmart still has enough rounds to go around,I don't really see the problem. And who buys ammo from walmart? Either way, It dosn't matter much, I don't expect the zombies to show up anytime soon.

Pfft, all real gun-nuts have enough ammo to supply the state of Wyoming. These people are wannabes.
I take offence. I have enough rounds for a .44 to supply Half of New York.
Wow, that's like 7 Wyomings.

If people need guns for home defence (as the pro-gun lobby would have us believe), why do they need 'a stockpile' of ammunition? They really expecting to need more than a few clips to hand?

You want to see a REALLY weird website to do with all things guns, ammo, the second amendment and surviving the inevitable zombie apocalypse? Check this out:

http://www.zombiehunters.org/

I swear this is for real, I've been trolling it for years. PS, don't mess with Gunny.
I hope you're kidding. They're obviously just using that as a metaphor for disaster.
I meant "real" as in the sense the site is not fake and is not created entirely as a joke. These guys rally have the guns and training though admittedly 99% of them are most concerned of terrorist nuclear attack or another Katrina style disaster.

For the record, this is pure unadulterated bullshit. The .45 was invented by John Browning in 1911, several years AFTER the 9mm was invented. It was designed with the intent to be the ultimate man-stopping pistol caliber. Its velocity is slower than the 9mm, but it has greater foot-pounds of energy due to its much higher mass. Its wider shape also gives it a more devastating wound channel. FBI statistics rate one-shot-stop capability of the 9mm at about 92%, and the .45 at about 96%, if I remember correctly.

Throughout the 1980s and early '90's when law enforcement was transitioning from revolvers to semi-autos, the 9mm was the most ubiquitous. In more recent years, many agencies are going to the larger calibers of .40, .45 and other more modern calibers such as the 357SIG.

.45 is very popular among conservatives though, but not a whole lot more than any other caliber. .380 is one of the most difficult to find now due to the spike in popularity of tiny concealable autos.

So yeah, BULLSHIT. But the ammo shortage is real, just go to any Gander Mountain or Cabelas and you'll see.

Edit: Oh, and subsonic?? You ever hear a .45 go off? Read the muzzle velocity on the side of a box of .45, do the math, and tell me whether you still think that's subsonic. The highest caliber that can be subsonic that will fire reliably is the .22. The author didn't even do the most basic of any research.

but who the hell buys ammo at wall mart?
Last I checked they didnt carry Banana mags

And the right to bear arms isn't for hunting, it was created for protection, much less personal protection, but more protection against an unjust government.
Like I said, I understand the second amendment and why it's in place in the US, but what I fail to understand is why there is a panic about an ammo shortage concerning civilian use. It's not like every single person in the US is engaging in daily death matches are they?. Where is the demand coming from to entice a panic from a supply shortage?.

"dictatorship starts when the people cant defend themselves". - When a panic ensues because people can't buy ammunition for home-owned guns then I think it's best to wonder what people really want to defend themselves from?.

When I said hunting, I was not implying that it is made possible because of the second amendment. Rather I was wondering, once again, what possible activities could cause such an alarming rate of ammunition consumption to have people in a buying sweep.

There's a gun store in my town right on the main road. On the sign is the ominous tag, "Get 'em while you still can."

Now, look, there's no plausible reason to think that Obama is going to take away our guns or ammunition, but people within the firearm industry are going to feed those irrational fears to fuel the huge swell in sales. Fanning the flames to keep their water boiling, so to speak.

Well you can't beat that Wal-Mart low price.

But seriously, it's a health reform not the spread of Communism. I knew that there were problems in this country, but when I saw that riot against Obama with pictures comparing him to Hitler then I knew that somthing was wrong.

And if people could stop watching Fox News and use their brains for once then they'd realize that. But they don't, so Glen Beck continues to get paid for saying shit like "anybody in the US Armed Forces is now effectively part of Obama's secret army" and Godwin's Law will continue to get invoked.

Anyway I think the point at which this entire ammo stockpiling craze made me realize people were seriously misinterpreting the second amendment was at the point I heard a story about a 65-year-old woman buying up ammo for an AK-47 because she was afraid Obama was going to take away ammo or whatever.

What. Does. A. Senior Citizen. Need. With. An AK-47? Bingo Night getting too agressive? Look I'm all for home defense but if you need an automatic rifle to defend your home you are living in the wrong part of town and should probably move. I also even understand the people who collect and fire off vintage weaponry. I know a couple people like that. They did not fly off the handle and start hoarding bullets.

I don't think this is good for the bullet industry. Once the pannic dies down every one who went on a buying spree will have a huge surpluss of bullets.

Then again as long as people are kept affraid they will buy buy buy.

This is why people in the US, gun owners or not, should be worried. Additionally, Democrats in the country usually are those in favor of cutting or restricting access to firearms. I don't even own a gun myself (yet, at least), but any government making moves to take arms away from its people is a government to be carefully and suspiciously watched. Knowing the previous actions and methods by which the U.S. operates, they won't pass a law banning the sale or possession of weapons altogether, they'll do it in a gradual and covert manner as possible.
