yeah, I remember that episode where daffy duck used an assault rifle with a chainsaw on the end to cut elmer fudd into a pile of bloody body parts and spraying blood.

Oh how I laaaaaaughed.
You should see the shit Wiley the Coyote does to the Roadrunner. I think that's where the writers of SAW got their inspiration. Yes...from ACME.

-but gears of war 2 has a content filter...so it's OK!
I'm tempted to have a look at that now, especially given one level that would be extremely hard to remove the gore from:
You have to fight your way through a giant worm's body and slice his hearts up - with a great deal of blood too the point where when they cut themselves out, the are nearly drowning in the stuff.

Indeed! Also, daffy duck was head-shot-ed by bugsy bunny and after his head came off, blood sprayed everywhere.

The vending machine idea aint so bad...

Maybe when selling anything rated Teen or up, give the person buying it a form with an explanation of the T or M rating, and a disclaimer to sign saying ' I, the undersigned agree that I have read and understood the rating of the video game I am buying, and will hold no claim of corrupting me or anyone else who may play it who is under the age limit designated by the rating'.

Then don't serve them for a full 5 minutes.

They can either read and sign it, or ignore it and be bored and sign it. Either way, its now not the video game industry's problem any more, they've signed away their right to ***** about violence in a game they were warned about and agreed to buy.

Also, the paperwork might end up more hassle than just making their squawling brat shut its piehole, and saves them $60. Hell give the average kid 5 minutes and he'll have decided he doesn't want Gears of War 2 any more , he wants chicken nuggets...NOWWWW!

(shame, this started out quite a clean tidy post, and as ever, degenerated into my usual child hate, still, child hate isn't as unpopular as the opposite.)

I was think about that but I think it would be a bit too complicated to implement.

Sheeeeeeeee-it. Somebody needs to explain to that lady what Gears of War is about. Kids that young should not be playing body-exploding violence like gears.
Do you think? I was playing Silent Hill at the age of 10. That's rated M by the ESRB. I turned out okay, although I am thoroughly afraid of zombie nurses. Non-undead nurses I'm fine with.
Hmm. Zombie nurses that bad?

Also gibbing is fun.

I dont see whats wrong with that to be honest, i mean enough little girls play with toy slags like barbie but that doesnt mean there going to go and get knocked up and when i was little i would play with toy guns and things as would many yound boys. I dont see the differance between a plastic replica and a compuer generated replica?
First off, replace the above Barbie, with Bratz, and your sentence can make more sense. Barbie has had the decency to actually reduce her breast size over the years. Bratz makes it a point to have all their dolls wear thongs, even the "baby" versions have diaper thongs.

It makes no difference if we are talking girls or boys.

The difference is when you were young and playing with your toy replica gun, all you had to go by was your own imagination. Pretending to shoot at criminals, indians, nazis, or whatever your version of a bad guy was. You were limited to what your 8 year old mind could think of...and that was determined by how you were raised by your parents. By what they let you see or do.

A CG gun in this case, Gears Of War 1 & 2, you are limited to the imagination of some 30 year old game geek whose had years of frustration, angst, hatred, and lust thrown into a first person shooter. Most of which an 8 year old just plain isn't exposed to yet in their lives. I have never been an advocate of thinking games harm children. I have 2 cousins, both of whom come from homes where their parents buy them what ever they want. One has grown to be the smartest of his siblings, the other was arrested last year. It comes down to decision making, and that rests on the parents.

I have a 9 and a soon to be 7 year old daughter...and I know plenty things in my life that I do not want them exposed to yet. Most of which that can be easily found on the computer. Of which BOTH of them know how to navigate smoothly.

My girls are at a time in their lives were outside influences will become stronger. School, friends, random idiots. You name it, it starts now. You cannot be super human and watchdog you kids to death. But as a parent you ARE ultimately responsible for what kind of decisions will enter the mind of your kids. While choices will always be theirs in life to be successful or fail. The object is to show them that there is always a choice, and to recognize the difference between a good decision and a bad one.

Anyway, I use to play GTAIII, a lot when I was younger and I'm fine
Ah, wait a minute; I see a problem with you. You misspelled a word. See people, proof right there, video games mess people up completely.

You misspelled "here". Just to assure you though it is a known as being a misspelling or homonym of here.

What does the content filter in GoW actually do by the way? Can I correctly guess its just swearing that is taken out or what?

Well, I know 8-year-olds almost mature enough to play Gears, and 2 has the option to turn off the gore (Penny-Arcade had a hilarious take on that), but I still can't think it's a great idea. Regardless, it doesn't matter what we say; it comes down to parent prerogative and responsibility. We can't enforce that.

Playing Devil's Advocate here but: What's the problem? GTA I can see more of an argument against, games like Manhunt are clearly not good - anything with a modicom of realism presents more of a problem, but all I remember of GoW that made it worse than anything else was the chainsaw. And you're using it to chainsaw up aliens for the most part, so I don't see why a kid shouldn't play it. Certainly, I played Unreal Tournament when I was fairly young, and I'm sure it had less of an impact on my mind than, say, Planescape: Torment's themes did (which, note, is a 15).
My little brother used to watch Saving Private Ryan when he was eight (because I had it, and he used to sneak down in the mornings at like five to watch it - hiding the box did no good). That movie has some messed up scenes but he used to love it. Since he was twelve, he hasn't been able to watch it because it sickened him..

I tend to think that the ratings bodies are a bunch of pussies when they think you need to be 14 to play Command & Conquer 3. This however is extreme. 8 year olds should NOT be playing something as gory Gears of War.
