I'm not saying "Smack the kid around". I'm saying sometimes 'pain' is the only thing the brain responds to.
If you want to go this route, I ask for evidence.

Like it or not, we are defined by what it 'hurts' or is unpleasent for us to do.
Children learn a complex system of half-meanings and innuendo with no violence involved. A vast majority of children learn this to mastery.

Anyway this is way, way off topic and sorry I hijacked the thread into it. We can take -this- to the Off Topic forum.

Judging mainly by the pitch of some XBL Gears 1 players voices, there are probably 8 year olds and unders already playing 18 certificates.
Personally, I dont think Gears should even be an 18 when compared to gore fests such as Mortal Kombat and from what I've heard, Manhunt.

MATURE
Titles rated M (Mature) have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.
I highlighted that second "may" because it suddenly makes the advice vague. It may contain sexandbloodandrockandrollingheads, but "may" inherently comes coupled with "may not". This is probably something I should wave at ESRB's receptionist.
not all mature rated games have all of those things.

you could make manhunt with fully clothed male mimes

it would still be M rated due to its graphic violence.

From the BBFC:
At ?18? issues may be even stronger and could include a focus on strong violence with realistic
injury detail, strong horror, very strong language, very strong sex references or even depictions
of sexual activity or drug use. Examples include the Grand Theft Auto series (?18?, 1997 - 2008)
for various consoles and Unreal Tournament 3 (?18?, 2007) for the Xbox 360.
It contains strong violence so yeah it's an 18.

I watched violent movies when I was a kid. My parents condoned it and so do I. I'm not sure about an 18+ game for an eight year old- it would depend on the title- but I personally think the ratings are too harsh. They are much harsher than film ratings, anyway.

I think that children who are mature enough in the head to play M games should be allowed to play them, I just don't think we should give kids under 10 mics, my voice may not have changed yet, but at least it doesn't shatter glass

i think it could be good if store staff were told to advise the certain aspects of games to a person before selling it to them, especially if that person seems ignorant about gaming (like a mother with a little kid)

it causes minimal fuss, gives gamers a way to argue back at the IDIOTIC claims of paranoid doom-sayers blaming games for all things bad in the world, and does genuinely prevent the exposure of adult material (blood, gore, sex, etc) to children who aren't ready for it yet

Good point. I guess with violence it all boils down to what can be classed as "strong".

Seconded. I want a feature that will automatically mute anybody with a voice above a certain pitch. Save me the trouble of muting them.

You think he was someone with dwarfism?

Because it's pretty difficult to mistake someone under 10 for an 18 year old.

Well, I pulled this clipboard that had a survey out of my bag and gave it him, however I'd left my pen at...
He was 3' 4" and didn't look like Weeman. It's not difficult to hazard a guess.

Not trying to be hostile-- I just thought it was a rather specific number to pull up based on nothing but height. But when you think about it, it is a lot easier to imagine, say, a 10-13 year old playing an M rated game than a 6-8 year old.

Just, you know, sayin'.

ESRB definatly needs more ratings (a revision I think is in progress). Teen needs to be revised to REALL be teen (13-17) and we need an 18+ rating- 'mature' is too vague.

And, thread made http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.76423

My parents would buy me a rated M game. Hell they let me watch South Park when I was 7, they knew it wouldn't make me talk back or act like a jackass.
same here. I watched the movie when I was around 10. Also around that time, I was playing the Turok games, specifically Turok Rage Wars on the 64. Also I played Mortal Kombat and other pixelated M games [Doom, Wolfenstein], my parents allowed this because pixelation is was so surreal. that was at the turn of the century, around where half-life revolutionized the FPS.

Now, with an 8 year old playing Gears, that's a highly detailed, up close, view of someone being chainsawed in half. That will be the kid who will grow up and laugh all the way though a Saw movie.

Well, he was nowhere near his teens judging by his voice. He was at the point where it's even questionable for him to be watching/playing 15 rated stuff.

Personally, my mother looked over the rating of any game I played, and would talk to the store representatives about them and then talk to me about what was in it and the talk about that it is not real ect ect ect. And I think I turned out fine, but also my first M rated games were Twisted Metal, South Park, and a few others that I can't remember, Of course by that time I was also already watching south park and beavis and butthead for two years, so yeah it depends on the kid, and the parents, I think my mother did a good job with how she did it. Mabey if they ran ads showing that and explaining different ratings it might help, especially if they are targeted to times like the news, after 10pm, and to kids shows where adults are most likely to be watching.

No.

Dammit, and I had aspirations too.

I could have been like Spider-man.

Aww
I guess I'll just be like The Punisher.

Mixed with some Joker.

And some Rorschach for good measure.
