Death Note, quite simply, is fucking amazing. Watch it if you want to die happy.
As well as that I would agree with everyone who's said Blood+, Fullmetal Alchemist, BLEACH (yes, capitals were necessary) and Cowboy Bepop.

Well, seeing as you are asking for recommendations...
I heartily recommend Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei.
Also, on the topic of 07th Expansion [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/07th_Expansion], who made the material from which the anime and manga above mentioned originate, I would recommend Umineko no Naku Koro ni.
Also, others outside of that group: Elfen Lied, FullMetal Alchemist, Neon Genesis Evangelion, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya...
That is all I can think of for now.

Yay, anime suggestion thread!

For fun action-y animes:

Blood+ (Vampires and blood all around)
Yu Yu Hakusho (Like DBZ, but they actually strategize and they don't take 20 episodes to convey 5 minutes...)
Full Metal Alchemist (Wonderful action and a terrific story)
FLCL (Short, but good action and crazy)


And though it's not as action intense as other animes and it dives into the deep end of the psychological pool near the end and has a complete "WTF" ending, I suggest 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' as it's my overall favorite anime and I simply loved it.

Blood+ definitely. Haji and his M*F* cello for the flawless win. Also, Soul Eater.

Let me just tell you that your definition of the word "cliché" is weird, to say the least.
