FLCL...it's straight forward
>> FLCL straight forwards? Hahaha. It's not nice to give completely wrong advice. Granted the series is awesome but also seriously strange...

Anywyas on topic: as said before, Cowboy Bebop and Code Geass are your best bets. Though I also loved Fullmetal Alchemist, the newest series is far better than the original.

Anime is a wholly foreign area for me. I know some people that absolutely love it, and I respect their judgement enough to feel like I'm missing out on something.

I've mainly been brought up on Western stories, and I've tried to make a direct jump to Anime before with varying degrees of success. But, I've never been able to properly 'click' with the phenomenon.

So I need a transmission Anime to spark an interest.

Any ideas?

EDIT:

Two more points of consideration
- I watched the following Animes top to bottom: Death Note and Vampire Knight
- If there is an Anime with any, ANY sort of Blues music in it, I MUST have it!

Cowboy Bebop is looking good ladies and gents!

Blues music really rocks. It's truly a remarkable genre. So badarse.
If you like blues, then Hellsing would be a good one for you.

Ghost in the Shell's a good one as well.

I'm not really into anime, but I wholeheartedly recomend Miyizaki films (especially Spirited Away) and Cowboy Bebop

it really does depend on what your looking for in an anime (i would have quoted but there are too many people making this point to do that)

Death Note is generally a good place to start, which you've already seen. but, if your looking for more fighting then try something like Naruto, Bleach, Evangelion etc.
for comedy i'd say go for something like Ouran Highschool Host Club, Fruits Basket or if you can deal with outright mindrape try FLCL or Fooly Cooly

just google 'anime list' and check out what comes up, if the synopsis dosn't sound like your cup of tea then try something else.

have you tried Black Cat?

Cowboy Bebop, the god among animes!
i have a feeling your not looking forward to the live action movie.

No. No I am not.
Please tell me this is outta photoshop......

And OT: i cant suggest everything thats already been suggested again, so ill give you something to watch after youve been eased in. Baccano!! was awesome, as is Durarara!! made by the same studio. Bakemonoatari has a real unique style, and is pretty good, as does Katanagatari (same author different studios). Also Spice and Wolf. Sure its kinda wordy and the economics talk is a little bit weird, but the relationship between the two main characters is what will keep you in it.

let's see...Darker than Black is excellent. And Wolf's Rain has a good amount of blues in it. jus be prepared to skip about 3 or 4 episodes. They writers didn't want filler bullcrap so they decided to make 3 episodes just to recap the the whole story and plot thus far.

Well Cowboy Bebop is one of the best starter animes of all time, every one likes it. Trigun has an appeal to western audience, its more popular in america than japan. Full Metal Alchemist is a maybe you may or may not like it. FLCL as said before is very crazy and chocked full of hidden messages, but also has a great sound track from an alternative band called the pillows.

If you a fan of music, i'd say avoid long running shows like naruto and bleach, not only do these shows have a lot of the elements that turn people off to anime, they have a limited sound track.

Great Teacher Onizuka [http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=191] (or GTO) it's a long series but very fun

Black lagoon was mentioned before, i also really liked it

Hellsing [http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=32] was really good for the action and the animation, it's about vampires as well.

when it comes to ordinary life with a bit of philosophy: 'Genshiken' or 'Welcome to the NHK'

I guess you would want to watch the classics too, so try Akira, Ghost in the Shell (Yoko Kanno did the music for this as well, but it's not Blues) and Princess Mononoke. These are pretty much the ones that got me hooked on Anime.

There is so much Anime that i do recommend you give us some info about stuff you like.

Trigun, westerny
Black Lagoon, Badassy
Dragon Ball ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, start with dragonball thought better combat and story, if you don't get hooked then I can't help you the Z is an acquired taste(besides being one of the highest selling anime of all time or something)
Trigun is a very good one, lots of humor, and not a lot of Japanese cultural humor (if you are new to anime, that stuff can go over your head and cause you to not like the show)

I never could get into Death Note like so many others. Series felt like it was never really going anywhere to me. The super-smart cop guy knowing exactly what was going on ALL THE TIME really got boring quick.

Those three episodes made me stop watching it i figured if i can fall asleep through that many episodes of a series why am I watching it. Its the equivalent to the big reveal at the end of Evangelin.

If you wnat to ease in I'd reccomend a show called Avatar: The Last Airbender. Its technicaly American made but the animation is in Anime style and the story draws from Anime influences without getting too foreign. It can get a little kiddy at times but its a good show.

Also you could go back to basics and start where most other Westerners started on Pokemon or DragonBall Z. Most people will say those aren't the best Anime in the world but they got quite a few people into Anime.
