Yeah, the right to freedom of expression ain't exactly worth much if self-censorship empties it of its content.

The court's protection is quite firm [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/publishers-note/8983-Publishers-Note-Games-on-Trial-Part-Two], so no reason to cover before what some ignorant mob might thoughtlessly think about gaming.

Good deal for everyone, the government does not need to tell you how to live your fucking life and raise your child. Don't let them think for a second that they have the ability or the intellegence to do so. I'd almost always side with a parent well before I would ever side with the government when it comes to child rearing.

Be a fucking parent and do the work, don't let the gaddam TV do it for you. You are responsible for how your child turns out.

The Republic of Ireland only cares because when fucktard laws are employed by americans fucktards in other countries pay attention.

You shouldn't be celebrating this, you should be chastising yourselves for it happening in the first place.

Even as you read this the same people who renounce the court's dessication are looking for a way to have it repealed.
Court's dessication?
At least we're not as backwards as Australia and Germany.

Keep in mind though, this decision is about more then games, it's a pre-emptive protection of all free speech on the ground that it "harms children" regardless of the media. Furthermore, it firmly reinforces the rights of minors to consume free speech.

Regardless these laws have been struct down without fail and this ruling makes them impossible, I don't see this situation as a negative reflection on the US.

I'll point you back to my "Fucktards" comment. A far more important thing to remember is that an awful lot of dangerous battles are lost one inch at a time, so slowly no one notices until being pawed by security is a prerequisit for trying to do anything outside your house.

You stop those bastards by never giving them space to take that first step.

Yay for a law 5000 miles away from myself

What a non event
Typical. 'It didn't happen in my country, therefore it means nothing'. Great outlook, dude.
Well, to be fair, the government is regulating the sales of games to minors here in Britain and we still have a thriving industry. I personally don't see the MASSIVE deal, I mean yeah sure principle and all that, but what would it really change?
The fact that any country at all is showing this is a step in the right direction.
I mean, the US advocates freedom of speech, gender equality, etc...but do all countries see that as the example to follow? How big a step IS this in the grand scheme of things? The lazy side of me simply can't help but see it as a sort of "fine, we see you, you're not mouthbreathing nerds, Ico is art and not porn, can we move on to bigger issues, please?" from the court.

To me, there's nothing here to celebrate because this doesn't mean an upsurge in "deep, mature, human condition, thinkerly, art, whatever" games. I just don't see this as an industry that's too different from film: Pop art and high art will remain separate, Duke Nukems will exist alongside Journeys, and you simply will not often see arty stuff become the norm outside closed niches...precisely as it is right now.

More importantly, look at other countries that censor games. So much for "protected form of expression" huh. I don't ever assume the US, or any government really, can't fuck with us in some way. All it takes is precisely the right wording from the right people.

If Piss Christ is okay, so is Duke Nukem. 'nuff said. But honestly, no generation ever fully embraces the art of the next in less than 20 years.
