Yay for a law 5000 miles away from myself
What a non event
Typical. 'It didn't happen in my country, therefore it means nothing'. Great outlook, dude.
Well, to be fair, the government is regulating the sales of games to minors here in Britain and we still have a thriving industry. I personally don't see the MASSIVE deal, I mean yeah sure principle and all that, but what would it really change?
The fact that any country at all is showing this is a step in the right direction.
I mean, the US advocates freedom of speech, gender equality, etc...but do all countries see that as the example to follow? How big a step IS this in the grand scheme of things? The lazy side of me simply can't help but see it as a sort of "fine, we see you, you're not mouthbreathing nerds, Ico is art and not porn, can we move on to bigger issues, please?" from the court.
To me, there's nothing here to celebrate because this doesn't mean an upsurge in "deep, mature, human condition, thinkerly, art, whatever" games. I just don't see this as an industry that's too different from film: Pop art and high art will remain separate, Duke Nukems will exist alongside Journeys, and you simply will not often see arty stuff become the norm outside closed niches...precisely as it is right now.
More importantly, look at other countries that censor games. So much for "protected form of expression" huh. I don't ever assume the US, or any government really, can't fuck with us in some way. All it takes is precisely the right wording from the right people.
