Analyst: EA "On the Right Path"

Despite suffering through yet another disappointing quarterly fiscal report, some analysts are saying that Electronic Arts [http://www.ea.com] finally appears to be on the right path.

EA reported an $82 million loss in the third quarter of its 2010 fiscal year, a big improvement over the previous year but still pretty terrible. In response, the company is "de-emphasizing low margin distribution" programs and predicting a three percent decline in packaged goods in its guidance for the 2011 fiscal year.

In other words, EA is aiming low - too low, in the eyes of Kaufman Bros. analyst Todd Mitchell, who said the company's prediction of $3.65 to $3.90 billion in revenues for the 2011 fiscal year "assumes a three percent drop in package good sales versus most expectations for zero percent to four percent growth."

Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan agreed that EA is playing it safe, although he noted that the company has good reason for doing so. "We think that EA management is being abundantly cautious about [fiscal 2011], after having been burned by an overly optimistic forecast last year," he said. "They were not the only ones who estimated robust results for last year, only to be proven dramatically wrong. We, too, thought that last year would result in solid industry growth, and we, too, were wrong."

But Pachter added that he expects good things to happen for EA in the next fiscal year, driven by "lower headcount, fewer facilities, fewer games and a growing digital business. This time, we think that EA is on the right path."

Over the past few EA releases I have found myself hating them less and less.

Mostly Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, and the Battlefield Bad Company 2 Demo.

Well if they quit being so SecuROM happy, that may help sales. On the other hand they may prune their IP's too much, in which case people may just forget what EA is.
I'm not sure, but besides Dante's Inferno(which apparently is just another God or War and/or Devil May Cry clone), I don't see too much emphasis on anything actually new from EA, and what they have hasn't exactly been a big moneymaker.

Maybe Kotick had the right idea on just focusing on the making of moneys. Or maybe I just need to go wash my mouth out.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
they have started making good games and trying new IPs and moving away from horrible drm shit, altho this new dedication to including alot of dlc is kinda creepy not to mention some of the weird plans they have with certain games such as C&C4 (aparently it wants to be online all the time even in single player and if a net hicup happens it fucks up your data). So to sum up, liking thier games more but still suspicous as hell of them and keeping my eyes on em.

What is up with all the "Analists claim" threads lately? None of us take them seriously or even care what they say.
We don't, no. But shareholders... well. If an analyst told them that jumping off a bridge would double the worth of their portfolios, the nation's waterways would be clogged for WEEKS. And EA, being a publicly-traded company, has to worry about the shareholders too.

So they neglect the gamers who supported them through their early years, in favour of milking the casual market for all it was worth.

And then come crawling back when that stops working out?

Fuck off EA.

I don't get why these "industry analysts" think they're so special? Anyone who follows gaming news can easily and do easily make these conclusions on their own.

EA is handling too many game franchises right now and also after buying out other companies they are now finding it hard to control expenses.

I really hope they do well.

I loved Dragon Age Origins and they seemed to put a lot of work into Dante's Inferno. I mean, 3 million dollars just for a 30 second slot on the Super Bowl is pretty bold.

Yeah nothing motivates quite like cutbacks, downsizing, and project cancelling. Hard to not go up when you're about as far down as you've ever been. But really this is driving them into the "roots" of gaming IE:A small group banding together for a great game. And hopefully it'll lead to some quality games from EA in the future XD oh god saying that actually made me lol.

Huh. What are you talking about?

a) When were they ever supported? It has always been cool to hate on EA.
b) In which way did they milk the casual market?
c) Who tells a damn thing about crawling?

I think you posted in the wrong thread.

They've also been focusing a lot more on original IPs lately too due to actually realising what they were doing wrong, in recent years they've been doing way better and lots of people hate them less.
