Anarchy in London?

I saw a few stories online, and was wondering if I could get some clarity from a London inhabitant. What is really going on over there? Is it as bad as I've read?

Nah, there are the student protests/riots. There was a really brutal one a few months ago where someone in a wheelchair was dragged by police if I recall. Oh and two members of the Royal family were egged. That was funny though. Horribly funny. The protests were about a raise in tuition to get into university. I think they've died down now or at least the news has stopped reporting about it.

EDIT: Ignore this. The protests that happened today were about something else entirely and I dropped the ball.

I can't remember the whole story now, but they'd raised it so much that people from less wealthy families would have no chance essentially, especially after changing it so suddenly. So what did the future of Britain do? Beat the shit out of police officers and do a lot of collateral damage.

Plus the BBC News 24 news feed at the bottom of the page are saying there's been214 arrests after demonstration in Central London.

This is what happens when the entitlement mentality is threatened by removal of the teat.

EDIT: I actually do feel sorry for them, though I said that with sarcasm. For years they lived in a world where they were allowed to establish a feeling of entitlement, and now it's been taken away. Probably for their better, but it's a shame that the socialist government programs killed their spirits so much that they feel they MUST have the government nipple to suckle from.

Actually, we paid tuition into university beforehand, it's not been suddenly established, it's just been suddenly raised so that many can't get into university now and it's likely they can't. Perhaps we didn't pay as much as you did, but it's on the same par as someone suddenly raising your tuitions and many of the people who wanted to go needing to abandon their dreams for the time being until they get the right cash together. Our colleges are free but otherwise that's it for additional education. At least, I thought that was what you were getting at, might be wrong, if I am, sorry, I'm exhausted and will be heading back to bed soon enough not to misread things and get myself in trouble.

today's march was not about tuition fees.

the one that was was not about the current generations tuition fees in any way.

no current generation student will be affected by the changes. none. (and they already pay fees).

it was about future generations and the principal of universal access to higher education which is now under threat.

it's not a great idea to extrapolate a huge amount of what you think something is about to something you (obviously) know very little about.

The Socialist programs are falsely keeping the costs of tuition low. They have to raise the fees because it's eventually going to bankrupt the government, as all socialist programs attempt to. This comes quite a shock to future students, as their teat is taken away, and they'll have to pay a higher percentage of their tuition.

I pay 100% of mine, going to a private college. Instead of rioting, I work, and bust my ass to build a future. These kids are tearing down their present, possibly destroying their future, because of a Socialist program. It destroys human capital, what more is there to say?

Yeah and I have no doubt there are going to be many here just like you who need to work for every penny they get to get into university too, just like there are people where you are that have to seek out grants, loans and fundings. But I'll leave it at that, I know only the bare minimum about this and I'd rather not get into a full-on debate about something I have limited knowledge on.

Oh no, I never meant that. I thought they massively overreacted and in the end it was just a good few of them just throwing fire-extinguishers from roof-tops and kicking windows in just because they could under the guise of a protest while many of them really were trying to influence the government but a few fuckheads took it too far.

Erm we didn't I voted labour personally and the election was pretty much a 3 way split The Conservative party only got into power because they got support of the Liberal Democrats. They basically took power without the consent of the people. This non-democratic system is why some people want proportional respresentation in this country.

My mum was at the marches today the real one was completely peaceful. Believe me she is over 60 and definately not an anarchist
