...and at that moment I knew the game/franchise was dead.

So, yeah, another bitchy thread for those that remain.

A thread about a moment in either a game or franchise that lost you.

Maybe it was a brand new mechanic, or a plot point so stupid you were done with it, or some kind of light bulb moment that you realized you just weren't having 'fun' anymore.

Resident Evil. Salazar.

Final Fantasy VII. This was the original. The first time I actively realised I didn't want to play a game anymore. I'd stopped playing games before, mostly because they were too difficult either in skill or complex mechanics, but this was fine, I could play it no problem. But I just realised I'm not enjoying playing this. It isn't fun. Despite all the reviews that say this is the second coming of Christ I just don't have any desire to carry on.

Assassins Creed was dead to me up until Black Flag when Ubisoft showed they were capable of at least entertaining the idea of injecting fresh ideas into their rapidly petrifying franchise, but it didn?t take long for them to return to stale form. Also, the story arc in Black Flag, the commercialization of the animus technology, just seemed extremely silly and lazy, like they weren?t even trying anymore and/or were content they?d written into the dogma the cash-grab potential for dozens upon dozens of ?Creed? games.

Assassin's Creed 2 when they changed the structure much more toward GTA whereas the 1st game was structured like a Hitman game but where you did the intel. They needed to improve the getting intel aspect of it most definitely. Assassin's Creed 2 also completely set up the 3rd game to really only take place in the present and deal with the current threat as Desmond become a legit assassin at the end of 2.

GTA San Andreas is when GTA just ceased being fun for me. It wasn't near as fun as Vice City. Plus, I feel that's when I realized what's the point of an open world game with linear missions? I can just play a linear game with higher quality linear missions. GTA and Rockstar in general have yet to remedy that issue.

Tony hawks pro-skater 5. Nuff said.

Need for Speed: Always online. Snuff dead.

Alone in the dark: Illumination. Buff head.

Anything Rareware post-Nuts and Bolts (but not including Nuts and bolts, I just can't remember what crap came after, it must have been buried deep within the subconscious awaiting to flashback at an opportune moment like in a speeding car just before I turn a high speed corner to finally end this mis...oh right...) Puff tread.

Spide...erman? 3? The? Amazing? Fluff dread.

MGSV. Not controversial. Just a fact. Kind of. Huff bread.

Sims. The. Any of them. They make me hate myself, more than usual, which is an impressive feat. Muff bled.

Superman 64. Guff fled.

Ugh, running out of rhyming bother now. They're all pretty non-controversial, this woodland creature finds it difficult to hold grudges against entertainment nuggets. That is all! Scampery scamples to my truffle cave I go!! (Rough bed.)

Valkyria Chronicles, when in the middle of a fairly decent tactical alternate world war 2 strategy game a magical invulnerable super waifu charged on to an already challenging battlefield with a super saiyan aura who could face-tank tank cannon shells.

Well, this is a gross simplification in many cases, but okay, I'll play:

-Avatar (cartoon): When Korra gets her powers back through DEM.

-Command and Conquer: The moment I started playing Tiberian Twilight.

-Merlin: The ending. Oh god the ending!

-Red vs. Blue: Season 10, episode 10. The moment when the dark path season 7 set the series on finally caught up with me, and I declared "screw it, I'm done."

-Resident Evil: Where in Resident Evil 5 you engage in a turret section against el gigante, after a previous turret section of shooting at ganados on motorbikes.

-Sonic the Hedgehog: Where I was introduced to the boost mechanic in Unleashed, where the concept of 'earning speed' went out the window.

-Star Fox: Command. Just Command.

-Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

-The Walking Dead: Season 5 in general

-Warcraft: When the series transistioned to MMO format.

-Warhammer Fantasy Battle: When the whole setting was gutted.

That said, like I said, this is an oversimplification. Of the ones listed, the only one that I can really say is completely dead to me is Red vs. Blue, whereas some franchises had the courtesy to die at the end of their run (Command and Conquer, Warhammer, Merlin, etc.) I mean, still watch the Sonic Boom cartoon, still keep up with Warcraft lore, etc.

Pokemon. Sun and Moon is just awful to play, and I see no reason to think it will be improved in the next gen. I hope I am wrong, but Sun and Moon are just garbage in ways I did not expect.

Assassin's Creed when they killed Desmond. Why? Cause they did not want to figure out how to add modern guns.

All of Bioware's franchises: When EA bought them.

Actually right around the middle of the tutorial, when you're island jumping in the Matrix loading program while a spooky dark wizard says ominous, probably terribly important, jibbery joo.

I like the magic, and The Outsider. Most of what he says is really just "I am above mortal understanding".

What were you expecting then?

Assassin's Creed III, the end of the game. When Desmond died, that's when I knew, "You guys have no idea what you're doing with this story, do you?"
Which is amusing, because III is the game that actually got me to start playing the series. Setting it during the Revolutionary War really made me interested, so I quickly played through all the other ones to catch up. And then they threw the story off a cliff and it still hasn't recovered from what I've read online.

Something not quite so silly. especially in the early stages. Save the hitherto unknown dark magic powers and Harry Potter extra for a midgame sidequest.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution/Dishonored: When it became clear the developers only designed the game around playing stealth in spite of advertising as an action RPG.
Stealth is the act of avoiding fun.

I think franchises like Metal Gear, Thief, Splinter Cell, etc., would disagree with you there.

Mega evolutions for pokemon. The game is poorly balanced imo. There are only about 50 truly viable competitive pokemon. Maybe 100 if you count teams tailored for a specific reason I.E trickroom.

They are just too many of the pokemon.

So because the point of a game is to avoid fun, it makes avoiding fun fun? That makes no sense.

As in, avoiding direct confrontation is the fun.

Tribes, when Vengeance made skiing take a single button press. I also wasn't thrilled with them placing the tutorial section 60% of the way through the game, but since that was the first time skiing was actually necessary, and it was a single-player game, I stuck with it long enough to finish the campaign. After having bothered to do that, I booted up the multiplayer mode... and saw that all of the available maps would've fit inside a single building of the first game. All pretense of strategy had been replaced with speed. That killed the series for me, and would've even if it hadn't killed it for everyone.
