So which characters were you most happy to see die/disappear in a game, despite the game trying its best to be all emotional and tragic about it?

Ben from the walking dead season 1, especially during his "I make dumbass mistakes that caused several peoples deaths but my family is dead so feel sorry for me" comment.

I was glad to let him drop.

Rosh fucking Penin in Jedi Academy (if you choose the Dark side). Watching Jaden skewer that whiny ***** with a lightsaber was supremely satisfying. My only regret was that the deed was done in a cutscene, meaning I couldn't chop him up into tiny bits with the saber dismemberment code.

Oerba Dia Vanille from Final Fantasy XIII.

This character, along with Snow Villiers (who is completely useless in every way possible) and Hope's personality for the first half of the game, were some of the absolute worst things about Final Fantasy XIII.

Seriously, they should have just let her go.

In terms of characterization, or lack there of, she is simply the stereotypical girl that wants to run away from her problems and not own up to her mistakes/responsibilities. Her only epiphany in the entire game is that she can't run away forever and still promptly refuses to own up to anything (until the end of the game when she and Fang sacrifice themselves). I was actually happy that she was gone at the end and sad that Fang, probably the best character in the game, had to go along with her.

Her appearance is nothing to really talk about either; stuck between school girl and fan service, it just makes her seem more immature than she should be. Also, her voice is so damn annoying. I wish I could stress this out more, but I cannot stand her voice.

For combat, she's easily interchangeable. She is defaulted as the Healer (or Medic paradigm), so naturally, she should be useful. Only everyone can become a Medic and having your characters switch to an all Medic group, or a Sentry-Medic strategy, will also do the trick. Okay, so maybe she could be a Ravager? Nope, Hope's the best Ravager in the game, plus Lightning and Sazh also serve as great Ravagers. Along with Snow, there is no point in having her in your party so long as you have Fang and Hope.

Everyone who died in Tomb Raider.

Especially...

...nerd guy and his fucking Esc T-shirt.

All the characters in that game were so painfully cookie-cutter and clichéd, I wish they all died.

Tess in The Last of Us. God, she was annoying and I knew she been bitten long before she dramatically revealed it before her heroic sacrifice. She was like "go escape" and in my head I was like "see ya". I really couldn't bring myself to feel anything for this woman, I'm not saying this game didn't move me at times, I just didn't like Tess.

I honestly can't think of one. If there's a character that bugs me so much I want to see him DIE, the game annoys me too much at that point to even like it. And I don't BUY games I don't like. I certianly don't play them long enough to get to the "tragic support character death" part. Gameplay would have to be pretty stellar to compensate for a story that annoys me. Like FarCry 3; after the "midboss" dies about 1/2 way through the game all of the good portions of the story are over and done and the rest is pathetic filler trying and failing to strech more gameplay out of a second island. But the gameplay is SOOOO good I actually went over to the island and cleared out the "strongholds" and sidequests. I played a couple of the story missions, but it just got so stupid I stopped bothering.

So it IS possible that it may have happened to me. If gameplay is fun enough I'll play a game with an annoying character that ruins the story for me. But I probably wouldn't recognize if or when it happens. I've tuned the story out completely at that point. Like I did with FarCry 3. If you are like me, a fan of the "Tecmo's Deception" series, tuning out a crappy story for awesome gameplay is something you could be fairly good at.

i'm reskinned to look evil as fuck, my main powers are lightning and choking people, and i have a red twin lightsaber... you seriously expect me to save you?! it gives you a more fun final level too if you kill him, it's the only logical choice.

for me, miranda in ME2 suicide mission. i plan out that mission precisely so she dies, i can't stand her and her arrogance

Kenny from the Walking Dead game. Was so sure and happy he died. S2 ep2 was something of a sucker punch to the gonads.

Kaiden from Mass Effect. I selected the option to ditch him so fast, I imagine that the rest of the crew thought "Wow, you didn't even let them finish the Choice sentence." It's his voice, I can't stand the whininess factor permanently imprinted by Carth from Kotor.

O.G Loc from GTA San Andreas. I spent a good hour purposely failing that one mission, just so I could repeatedly blow him up with a rocket launcher. Then I would inevitably complete the mission and he was gone for good.

Wow, that's a pretty harsh treatment of a kid who is just a bit of a scared idiot during a zombie apocalypse. He didn't set out to hurt people, he was just scared.

In Baldur's Gate I always murdered Dynaheir right in front of Minsc. Either I was playing mage and didn't want another or because if I wanted a mage I seemed to always take Xan. It would always cause a massive outcry from Minsc, but he seemed to get over it and I definitely was only happy to see her go.

It seemed to be a running theme in Baldur's Gate - despite its great approach to stories don't get me wrong - but there was always a way around the characters who supposedly had partners they 'had' to party with. Death usually sorts them out and it doesn't leave them upset for long at all.

I would've been the same but I found Ashley to be a bit of a pain in the ass too. So it wasn't a choice of "Who will you save and keep and cherish?" but rather "You can remove one thorn from your side but only one. Choose wisely".

I was a bit annoyed I didnt get to shoot zombie Kenny.

Not here to change your opinion of her but there is one very good reason why you should have her in your party and why she is not interchangeable and that is because she has access to the death spell which no one else gets and combined with the malboro wand (upgraded) and her own sabotage skill affinity it has a very good chance of activating which makes farming the giant turtle things much less of a chore and actually possible a lot earlier than it otherwise would be. Shes useless against the long gui though as they are immune to death best use Lightning and Fang then as they have the other two best ultimates imo.

Hahahahaha, I was playing it with a friend recently and he wanted to do the same thing throughout the entire game. When he's playing with me though, he feels awfully unsure about choices like that because he knows I've played it and may have insight in something like "oh yeah, he's terrible, but then at the end, the only way not to die is to have him alive, because he rides a nuke from the sky and protects you from the blast with his magical stupidity shield". So he spared him, or rather, saved him and I just kept laughing through the rest of the game as he found him consistently more and more irritating and useless xD

You gotta give credit to Telltale, it's rare to find a character so ridiculously and consistently awful with no redeeming quality, usually those characters turn around at some point, but it's quite realistic to have someone (and one of the main cast in fact) who's just utterly useless, especially in situations like that.

OT: Alan Gunderson from State of Decay comes to mind. It was a pleasure putting a bullet through his skull myself. Heartless as his some of his points may be, I understand pragmatism. But any idiot insisting not to use a ton of highly mobile steel in a world where cars run on air and 4+ cars can be restored overnight from a smoking heap (actually ON FIRE) of junk missing tires, windows and doors into a show model by a motherfucking plumber, because IT MAKES NOISE and then suggests I go in through the window and alert every zombie in a 10 mile radius... just deserves to be fucking shot.

I'd put a spoiler warning, but seriously, the game is from 1999. Mine was Ignus in Planescape: Torment. Not because I disliked him - he actually gave me a few nice chunks of XP from his companion chatter - but because it was painfully obvious the entire time that he was going to turn on me and I just wanted to get it over with. When a guy's only interest is in burning literally everything to the ground, a confrontation with my neutral-good hero was pretty easy to predict. When he finally did attack me it was just a relief to have gotten it over with!

Wow, people have absolutely no spoiler etiquette... it's amazing, and sad.

"But it's a thread about characters dying! What did you expect?"

Well shit, you usually go into a spoiler thread when you know the spoiler for the property being discussed, but since the thread has no specific focus, the only way not to get spoiled is to have played ALL THE GAMES and seen ALL THE MOVIES? Is that what the dozen or so posters so far have done?

I bet not... So how about, you know,
[HEADING=2]saying which property you're about to spoil first,[/HEADING] so that readers can choose to read and discuss only the spoilers they know, on a post-by-post basis?? Am I applying too much common sense for the internet this morning?
That was my bad. Of course, one should assume spoilers abound, but I still should have posted as much in the heading, and for that I apologise.

Spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 1

Wow, that's a pretty harsh treatment of a kid who is just a bit of a scared idiot during a zombie apocalypse. He didn't set out to hurt people, he was just scared.
Sorry, but I don't buy that. Sure, a few things are understandable, but the sheer CONSISTENCY with which he got people killed/in danger just makes me angry. He did EVERYTHING wrong. I have no sympathy for the kid - the two things that take the cake are probably "hey, let's take this axe that clearly holds that door shut in a place where zombies might come in!" and "hey, I feel so bad about Kenny's family, I should tell him RIGHT NOW that I am to blame!" even though it is the WORST possible moment ever. I mean, seriously, Ben, you could have done this whenever. Before the mission. After the mission. But noooo, you needed to tell him at exactly the moment in time when it might have gotten us all killed. You were able to suppress your moral conscience before this, couldn't you do it just one more hour? No, you NEEDED to tell him right now, because YOU feel bad.
Just so much of his behaviour is about how HE feels, what HE needs.

It's not that he's scared and stupid, it's that he is ALWAYS scared and stupid.
Didn't let the guy die, though. After all the bullshit he did, I thought "well it would be a waste now to let him die, maybe he learned his damn lesson".
