Well... no, you see, it's because EA are evil. Folk can beat around the bush saying "well they're spying on us", but it's not, it's because we all know they're evil. They've got a history of being evil, we know they're going to continue being evil in the future. They're pretty much the Blackwater of this industry.
If, say, Bethesda, decided to start their own digital distribution platform, I don't think anyone would care. Heck, the only real reason GFWL didn't take off in the same way as Steam is because it was absolutely naff.
