I think your missing a key point here. The key element is she was I quote "looking for money to buy a metro ticket".

This basically implies that she did not have any money to buy said ticket, and wasn't exactly heading over to the ATM. "Looking for money" in this context meaning either panhandling or scrounging. Neither of which are things you want going on in any public place for obvious reasons.

It's clear that we don't know the whole story, each side is very different.

It's not surprising that everybody here sides with the citizen, "fighting the power" seems to be very "in" these days.

I think with today's society, witht he advent of cell phone cameras and the like, we are innundated with more knowledge of what's been pretty much standard practice for years before we had that technology. People are getting fed up with their tax dollars going to waste as well, especially in these trying economic times. These stories hit close to home for most people, in one way or another. In that sense, I don't think it has much to do with being "in", you just hear about things more often. Personally, I can't see how it's a bad thing, as the police in America don't have much oversight and are generally held unaccountable for their actions, or in most cases, "suspended with pay", which is a further waste of each citizen's money.

No, it doesn't become the law just because some random officer says so, but because some random officer says so, and then gives you a ticket for it! It was probably the law to begin with. But your still missing the point, why create conflict? all she had to do was hold the rail. It not like they asked her to stirp off or anything. By holding onto the rail she lost absolutely nothing and helped the officer in their job. But instead she chose to create a conflict she could easily have avoided and screwed up both hers and the officers day most likely.

Because the police are there to serve YOU, not the other way around. The moment you start giving in to bullshit power trips like that is the moment your country will take one step closer to becoming a police state. You do something like hold on to a handrail for some asshole cop and the next time he orders someone to do something it will be more severe, until they start demanding people to just what you said, strip.
