There's been good in-game music - the GTA games are particular highlights, especially Vice City.

But the best, best in-game music has to be in Fallout 3. Not because they had the best set-list as it were, or most listenable. But because it goes so against expectations so much. Listening to 50's swing and such whilst wandering an the DC wasteland exploring ruins and blasting Ghouls caught me so off-guard that it stays with me to this day.

All other in-game music just seems so...cliched.

What do you think? What's your favourite in-game music?

NB: By in-game music, I mean like radio stations or music in the game that you imagine the characters would hear (like in GTA or Fallout). Soundtracks to games don't count

You made two copies of this thread.

OT: I'd have to say either Need for Speed Most Wanted or Hot Pursuit 2K10.

I know most people don't seem to like it, but I have to say I loved the Wet soundtrack, found so many bands I like now from that game.

Can't really think of any that fit the criteria though.

Would Devola's singing in NieR count? Not only is it catchy as hell, but it also ties into the plot, as well as the overall tone and immersion of the game (in one of the darker moments, she stops singing, and for the rest of the game, the further you get from her the fainter her singing is. She also stops singing if you talk to her, because you're talking to her.)

EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2NGMpF8oLU

Devola and Popola rockin' it out in the tavern.

Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
Or maybe Animal Crossing, though I may just remember that really fondly because it made up 75% of my childhood.

Oh, and I liked the Sims 2 music.

I actually didn't enjoy the Fallout 3 music. I mean, the swing was alright but was interrupted too much by that Dog guy and there was actually a mission in the game that made me specifically hate the violin.
For me, whilst not the best I've heard, after recently playing 'The World Ends with You' I'm going to give it an honorable mention.

Bioshock. I mean, it's basically to the same effect as Fallout 3, so either of those, but it's my golden opinion that Bioshock did it better.

The Wild Arms series, Chrono Cross, anything by Joe Hisaishi ( i know he does movies, not games, but it's definitely a similar style of music, the way he does it)

I haven't played it, but I imagine that would count as her singing is something the characters in the game would hear in their world...

Another good shout out - Princess Garnet's singing from FFIX - the scene where Zidane is waking up in the village and here's singing outside the cottage.

Guys, stay on topic. This isn't about game soundtracks, it's about music the characters themselves hear in the game. Windwaker was a good example (Ocarina of Time would also count, especially Saria's Song.)

Edit: Also, if you get the chance, you should definitely play Nier. It's a great game.
