Metal Gear Solid 4, atop the submarine. When snakeater started playing, it was amazing.
I can just imagine Snake singing the Snakeater theme to himself whilst fighting Ocelot :-D

I actually didn't enjoy the Fallout 3 music. I mean, the swing was alright but was interrupted too much by that Dog guy and there was actually a mission in the game that made me specifically hate the violin.
For me, whilst not the best I've heard, after recently playing 'The World Ends with You' I'm going to give it an honorable mention.
Actually, I get what you mean. I think they addressed that in New Vegas, as there's a radio station that just plays music - but it just ain't the same! :)

Soundtracks to the game don't count? Well in that case wouldn't it be impossible for any game that isn't Fallout or GTA to have the best in-game music? Not a lot of games have radio stations, and those that do usually just use real songs and don't bother to make their own.

Captcha: Dream Big... Very motivational?
True, a lot don't have radio stations, but there are plenty of games where someone is singing in the game, or where music is being played that the characters can hear.

Another example is Leilana's song in Dragon Age, when she sings at the camp-fire

I do believe someone might have been to another site maybe techreport? 'cus they have same friday nigth topic ;-)

ontopic I think the game developers doesn't put to much effort into getting the music to fit in to the gameplay most it seems just generic but i guess it is really hard to make good music that at the same time fits the players actions... But i guess Hl2 Ep2 is one of the better o and shadow of the colossus ;-)

Sorry to disappoint, but I haven't even heard of techreport, much less been to their forums! I was listening to the Fallout 3 soundtrack and the thought came to me :)

Would Devola's singing in NieR count? Not only is it catchy as hell, but it also ties into the plot, as well as the overall tone and immersion of the game (in one of the darker moments, she stops singing, and for the rest of the game, the further you get from her the fainter her singing is. She also stops singing if you talk to her, because you're talking to her.)

Devola and Popola rockin' it out in the tavern.
Fixed it for you...

Chrono Cross. I still listen to the soundtrack, and occasionally place songs into other games (like Oblivion).

I preferred New Vegas to 3. Three Dog was just too jarring when compared to the 50's music he was DJing. Mr. New Vegas at least had an equally smooth voice and didn't try so hard to be obnoxious when he transitioned into the music. I turned off Fallout 3's radio and listened to silence. I kept New Vegas on.

Since you won't count soundtracks (you might as well change your thread to "best in game radio" by the way, since this cuts out roughly 80% of gaming), I'd say that I preferred SSX 3's music. It really fit with the mood, the DJ fit with the mood, and it felt very well meshed in so that your character was indeed listening to it (ie, most of the music dies out while you're doing a trick, then comes back emphatically when you land it, which is part of the euphoric joy of focusing on, and then nailing a trick).

If you include music not heard by the character, PSO: Ep I and II win it for me.

I'm making my own game at the moment, and I can tell you it's so hard to know exactly what kind of music to use. Music was one of the first things I wanted to design, as great sound design is such a win, but it's so hard to know what will fit before you playtest - but once you playtest, it can take quite a while for the custom sound to be ready...

Comes down between every Halo song, especially Skyline from ODST, and No Heaven from Borderlands.

I hate to say it, but Call of Duty Modern Warfare(s) and World At War, all three games have amazing music, and it's usually very well suited to the scene in-game.

Actually, the music from the original Gran Turismo - could've been playing through radios in their sports cars
