A friend and I were discussing this the other day.

I don't know what the situation is like in America and other countries, but here in Britain, it seems that about two or so years ago, everyone suddenly, without any conversation, migrated from Myspace to Facebook overnight. When did this happen? And why?

And does anyone even use MSN any more? I know I still log in automatically, but the majority of the time I am 'appearing offline'. A lot of my friends migrated to Skype one day.

Essentially, sites like Myspace and Facebook are the same. But I wonder, what is our generations obsession with social networking websites?

Social networking is popular so people have somewhere to moan about absolutely everthing in their pittyfull little lives, without actually having to talk to someone directly where they might have gotten a response they did not like..

Also it is a easy way to meet people you might not have else gotten in touch with, and might not have dared talk to in real life..

It is also a place where all new rumors spreads like STD's at a festival..

Last but not least, they have Farmville and such where easily entertained people spend all their days and nights..

People like to believe they're important. They do this by filling a public profile with an abominable number of inane facts about their dreary existence, then addign thousands of people to prove to themselves they aren't really alone, miserable and hated by society.

That is why.

Incidentally, feel free to add me on my Facebook! [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HrSN7176XI] I like having new friends. What? You think I'd post my real Facebook on the forums?

No one really goes on MSN any more, and Skype seems to be gaining popularity, but Facebook seems to be the biggest one for chat as well. People only use MSN if FB chat's down, and Skype for free prank calls.

Facebook is a camwhore's dream to be honest.
It's being ruined by the creation of ridiculous groups which continues to anger me..ha..ha

According to a friend of mine "MSN is used to check out people I met on Omegle and Chatroulette"

Facebook has a significantly more user-friendly interface than Facebook. And it isn't as god-awful UGLY.

Facebook made it easier to find people you know as well as had a (shitty) instant messenger on their page. Facebook was just better at the time. I do in fact still use MSN

Only got facebook because apparently some people are easier to reach through it than by their phone (I don't even know)

And I only use MSN to check email and occassionally talk to some people

our generations obssession with networking sites is quite easy to explain, they allow people to feel social without having to actually socialise.

?

OT: I think the social networking things is really taking off because everyone is narcissistic and nobody has the decency to hate themselves anymore.

Sorry comrade. I forgot to quote the part about Myspace and Facebook being essentially the same.

As for why social networking is taking off? Because it makes for far more effective and intuitive for the layman for communications with large groups of people worldwide.

Also, it's an incredible marketing tool, since people will generally build up any product they like anyways. Now everyone can know!
