Minneapolis has a statue of Mary Tyler Moore (I would have preferred Crow T. Robot given the shows roots.) so why can't Detroit have one of Robocop.

This is so far beyond awesome! Such an iconic figure of fiction getting a statue? More cities need to do things like this.

This is what every city needs. A golden statue of a beloved sci fi icon.

I can't work out if that was a sarcastic or not..

Wow...this is what you want to put up to improve the city of Detroit? That place was a dump before the automotive giants began to leave...

Just saying, you could do a hell of a lot more to improve Detroit then put a statue of RoboCop in it...
Have you been to Detroit? I was there in 2008 and it was a broken city. every other house was condemned and it was just a depressing place to be in. Think of this as a moral booster. Its letting anyone with a spare dollar feel like they are improving the city, which in my opinion makes this idea a great one.

Honestly this is cool but a bit disappointing. They should take that 55,000+ and instead open up a soup kitchen or something in Robocop's name. At least then it'll serve Detroit better than a new pigeon toilet.

That is bloody awesome! So in Japan they got Gundam, Detroit gets RoboCop. I wonder what Portugal´s cool statue would be...ok, nevermind.

Personally I say keep the money rolling in and get a statue of Robocop in battle with ED-209.

Gotta give some love to ED

Wow Detroit must be a utopia if that money cant be use to improve the actual lives of the people in any way aside from making a pointless statue.
Yeah, coz $55000 would go a long way to solving crime and poverty. Sheesh.

There were 4 movies (besides the original trilogy) which pretty much compiled a made for TV mini series. Most will tell you how awful it is, I always really liked it a lot despite the flaws, definitely worth a look, I thought it was probably the best use of the franchise besides the original film of course.

Anyways, this is pretty cool. Maybe it shall motivate people to clean up the streets more :p
Ah yes, "The Prime Directives."

Sure they were shitty budget DVD releases, but I got the whole set, enjoyed 'em too. They're not as bad as Robocop 3, plus the idea of a slightly clapped out Robocop ten years down the line in a cynical city really struck a chord with me.

I can really feel the anger coming from the Citizens of Detroit! Grrrr-Oh wait, I can't, because they aren't angry. A couple of nerds were whining about their silly dreams not getting fulfilled, but they hardly warranted such a headline. Oh news, how you continue to mislead me.
Lighten up dude! We have fun here.
You know just as well as I do that nobody can have true fun unless there is a grouchy principal around to frown at you pesky kids and your shennanigans.
I can't argue with that sir.

James Bond was in Portugal once.... I suppose you could co-opt him since Britian isn't using him.

Theres probably some good Irish ones, but I cant for the life of me think of any.

Well Detroit, if you're looking to offload that statue, I've got some room in my back garden. That'd totally freak the neighbour's cats out.

I MUST HAVE IT.

It goes alot further than $0 but hey you want to throw money away be my guest.
Ah, but it's not my money, so personally I'm all for a statue to a sci-fi icon.

Power to Detroit for getting an awesome statue like this. But now I'm suddenly really disappointed at my home town. Why the hell doesn't Winnipeg have anything worth showing off? The best thing we have is The Forks, and even that's shadowed by places like the Mall of America and the West Edmonton Mall.
Well, you've got the Blue Bombers. But they haven't really been good since the mid-90s, have they? Still, they should at least have some great player from the past with some awesome nickname worth immortalising.

OT, while I think this is horribly silly, in reality it's a good way to handle it. The mayor said no (reasonably, I feel, as Detroit needs that public money spent in other places), so private citizens are doing it. The group pushing for it gets what they want and no taxpayer money gets spent on it. I call that a win-win.

This is just pure awesome. I feel like I would enjoy living in Detroit. Not because of this, just in general.

Aww, I don't get any credit for the story? :)

Anyway, still think it's cool about the statue. Sure they'll build it, but put it where?
