I have just finished watching akira and Ghost in the shell. Both have risen to my list of my favorite movies (prefered ghost in the shell). So i was thinking are there any other Sci-fi or cyber punk animated films i should be aware of or which i should see and are there any western animated films.

Cowboy Bebop is a great anime. There's also a Cowboy Bebop movie.

Hmmm... not really seen that many and these might not be what you're looking for, but I'll recommend them nonetheless:

Sky Crawlers - look for the allegory (plot is aerial warfare for the purposes of entertainment)
Appleseed - (any of them) though if you've seen the original OAV/read the manga, take it with a pinch of salt...

EDIT - Oh, dear lord, how could I forget... Knockin' on Heaven's Door, as already mentioned... best traditionally animated dogfight ever...

Does it have to be a movie? Because I wanted to recommend Steins;Gate, a 24 episode anime series. It does have a movie scheduled to come out this year, but... yeah. If you are looking for a great sci-fi thriller epic, look no further.

Well if you ever into retro anime there are Dominion: Tank Police, Bubblegum Crisis and AD Police. Oh there is also the CGI movie Vexille.

Mobile Suit Gundam it got adapted into 3 movies.
Zeta Gundam also got adapted into 3 movies with new animation in certain parts.
Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Tank Police (OVA) it borders on Cyberpunk and is written by the guy that did GITS but it,s more comedy.
Appleseed (all both)also written by Shirow Masamune

Steering clear of Anime I always reccomend Titan AE. It's far from perfect but it's fun.

I was going to recommend titan AE as well. It isn't rated R and is fairly family friendly, but its still great.

Cowboy Bebop is a TV show not a movie, but it is one of the best shows ever made. Judging on the 2 things you listed you would like it.

A Scanner Darkly is a pretty good animated cyberpunk film. It's not super-futuristic but it is Sci-Fi and it's very fun to watch, except the ending is kinda depressing.

i can understand the time issue but seeing as you liked the Ghost in the Shell movie, you definitely owe it to yourself to watch the sequel and the series.

All very nice animated sci-fi movies.

Also Wall-E

For GITS with a different (closer to the manga) flavor try out Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society.

You could also try the Evangelion Rebuilds.

Blue Sub 6 could be run through in one sitting, it's a 4-episode OVA. Genocyber is another short OVA, not sure you could make it through in a single sitting though.

Oh, and how could I forget, Armitage. A short (4 ep) OVA and two movies. Check 'em out.

Outlaw Star. I watched this on toonami years ago and loved it, which is why i've started watching it again.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. There are robots and spaceships so it's sci fi. Also...KAMINA!

Rebuild of Evangelion 1.11 and Evangelion 2.22 are definite options! Mardock Scramble is good too...

...I disagree... torrent Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and tell me the production value isn't good...

If that actually gets you into anime: Gurren Lagann, Karas, and Trigun...

-Evangelion 1.11 and 2.22 (Remakes of the Anime series, but you don't need to watch the series to enjoy the films)
-Paprika
-Time of Eve (6-part ONA, made into a movie.)
-Summer Wars
-The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Sci-fi...ish? It has time traval...sort of.)
-Dead Leaves
-Redline (Racing, but with sci-fi elements)
-Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann: Gurren-hen and Lagann-hen (Recaps of series, but with a few minor changes and improvements.)
-FLCL (6-part OVA series)
-Gunbuster and Diebuster (Former is a 6-part OVA from 1988, the latter is a 6-part OVA from 2004. Also made into a 2-part movie.)

Redline. It's like grafitti street art come to life. A bunch of humans and aliens compete in the galaxy's deadliest race course. Loud, stupid, fast, colorful, and intense. The visuals of this movie blew my fucking balls off.

Wall-E. It's pretty good if you haven't seen it. I like Cowboy Bebop too.

EDIT: Holy cow, how could I forget about Megas XLR? It's not a movie but man it's good. It also has the coolest intro ever made.

EDIT 2:
